BLURR

Purtroppo i pregi finiscono qui.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day:
'The film is shot almost entirely within closed quarters, where the incredibly few characters live, or die. In fact, the movie is so self-contained in its spaces you stick only to its insulated story line, not once its time or place setting, let alone the society that surrounds it, or even semblance of a larger politics. (...) The camera, (...) stepping in and out of rooms, zooming in and out of characters, calls for skilful photography, to costantly create and release tension. (...) Purely as a performer, she's [Taapsee Pannu] doubtlessly in her element in a double-role. She's possibly the most thriller-happy, female lead/star we've had in Bollywood. (...) Blurr is what should qualify as a 'why-', instead of 'who-dunnit'.'
Mayank Shekhar, 07.12.22

Film Companion:
'The execution is too self-serious to realize the complexity of its themes. The movie is too preoccupied with being scary, suspenseful, stylish or clever to empathise with - or even understand - the humans within. (...) [Taapsee] Pannu's Gayatri experiences a whole lot of trauma as a person. (...) But her performance makes it hard to invest in Gayatri beyond the immediate threat to her life. (...) Blurr is all design and no instinct. (...) The perpetually jolted expression rarely conveys a broader depth. It's also awkward writing. It's often about what's happening to her within a moment, in isolation to the rest of the story; the tone is totally different in the next scene, with some sequences entirely missing transitions and chunks of exposition. (...) There is very little emotional continuity, as though the makers are only concerned with the plot rather than the mental consequences of being stalked by a psychopath. (...) This dissonance is jarring, the jump-scares are desperate, and it only goes to show that the film lacks a sense of touch despite being a giant metaphor about sensory connections. (...) The use of darkness (...) is gimmicky. (...) The world-building feels incomplete'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* Taapsee Pannu talks about her horror thriller Blurr, Sudeshna Banerjee, The Telegraph, 26 dicembre 2022:
'Blurr is your first film as producer. What made you turn one?
I always planned to turn producer but this film did not feature in the plan. Two months after signing the film I realised I needed a bit more than just being an actor. I wanted the film to be made in and look a certain way. As an actor, you can’t really command a lot of things. So I decided to step in as a co-producer so I could actually ask for things beyond acting - right from casting to the technical departments or how the film needs to look... I asked Vishal (Rana, the producer) who had the script, to let me come on board. Once that happened, I asked him if we could ask Ajay (Bahl) sir to direct it. I had seen his Section 375 and had messaged him saying I wanted to work with him.
This is a remake of the Spanish film Julia’s Eyes. Did you watch the original?
I had seen it in 2018 when I was doing Badla, which was based on another film (The Invisible Ghost) written by him (Oriol Paulo). I was so blown away by his writing that I watched everything he had written. So when this came my way, I did not need any description and said yes.
What kind of changes were made for the Indian adaptation?
Sometimes European thrillers are too cold for Indian audiences. At a human level there is very little takeaway. So we brought in the humanness in the film where you have a certain mental condition to take back home. It’s also a human drama in addition to being a thriller. That humanness has been added in the script. There is a kind of, I wouldn’t say social commentary, but something that will make you look at society and certain people in a different way. (...)
In the scene where they [le due gemelle] are together, the opaque lens in Gautami’s eyes helped viewers distinguish the two.
Getting those lenses, which made me actually blind, really helped me perform. I tried leaving them behind for a couple of scenes, thinking VFX would take care of it later. But it was just not working. So I chose to actually go “blind”. If you’ve seen me banging into things, that is because I genuinely can’t see there. Only the parts where I am climbing up and down stairs are where I could actually see a little through my bandages so I didn’t actually trip and injure myself. Then shooting would stop (laughs). But other than that, every sequence where you see me blind or blindfolded, I actually can’t see anything. The only thing I could sense is where the light was coming from.
How disconcerting was it to shoot like that? Gautami, who lived alone in her house, had to know her way around, right?
We had shot a few sequences of Gayatri in that house before I shot Gautami. Since Gayatri was turning blind slowly, I could take the liberty of being a new blind person who just doesn’t know how to deal with this blindness. When I turned blind for Gautami, I could not be bumping into things as it is her house. I was pretty familiar with that house by then.
Could you switch on your other sensory faculties when the camera was switched on?
In between shots and takes, it was just too cumbersome to remove those lenses and that blindfold all the time, plus it is difficult to go in and out of the blind zone. So most of the time, I kept the lenses on so I could get used to them. It was very uncomfortable at the start. You get anxious and impatient that you cannot use your eyes suddenly. But that heightened my other senses. I feel I started listening more and thinking in a more balanced way. My mental focus became sharper.
You were having to react to even wind or sound. Were those provided to you as cue?
Since I was not so used to being blind, certain things I needed a cue on. So I needed someone behind the camera to tell me that at this moment, someone passed. But for the wind, I had to react to myself because I could feel it on my body. Also there are a few sequences using things other than sound, where we wanted the audience to experience even visually. When I lose my eyes, you don’t see either on the screen. We wanted the audience to get into the world where the protagonist, through whom you are watching the film, sees what you see, but when she does not you also do not. That was an experiential-level writing.
You screened the film for a visually-challenged audience. How did that go?
I was not prepared for that kind of response. We opened it first to them. I reached there not knowing how they would respond as I am not clear how they understand a film without watching it. There is an audio description for the visually challenged. But we are so used to visualising a film that I don’t know how they process it. It was crazier than a singlescreen audience response. They were screaming, shouting, cheering... (...) The questions they put were so nuanced. They even asked me about the software on my phone that I used! I was in tears by the end of it'.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: **
'You could just feel quite needlessly bored after a point here, that's all. Especially with some inanities for dialogues. (...) There is seriously no half-assing on VFX. Every frame is polished to bedazzle you with lights and colours. (...) In exchange for a set-piece by the second, they may have emotionally undernourished the script. (...) Ayan Mukerji (...) seems out of depth here, he's certainly operating outside his warm, intimate comfort space. (...) This is stellar stuff on the tech front. (...) This feels like a slightly hollow, hot mess, that leaves you feeling distantly cold. (...) Brahmāstra belongs to a genre that's categorically critic-proof'.
Mayank Shekhar, 11.09.22

Film Companion:
'It's hard to pinpoint precisely where Brahmāstra - Part One: Shiva goes wrong. The possibilities are endless. It could be the kitchen-sink syndrome - where a movie clubs you with so much body that it hopes you're too wonky to notice its vacant voice. Maybe you won't notice the wooden performances. Or the deafening score. Or the distinctly poor dialogue. (...) Or every other frame resembling a burnt strip of polaroid film. If a fantasy movie repeatedly yells that love is the greatest weapon in (Hindu) mythology, maybe you won't notice that it has no heart. That its romance plays out like a glitchy algorithm. (...) That the heroine calls her hero by name only 373 times in total. (...) (...) Like I said, the possibilities are endless. And maybe you're too shell-shocked to notice them all. Marvel's been doing if for years. No reason why B1S can't do it better. But it's no hard to pinpoint why this film goes wrong. It's not unusual, especially for stories steeped in scale and religious scripture. B1S is so caught up in its conceptualisation and myth-building - which, on paper, is kind of fascinating - that it forgets to behave like a film. The writing is so excited by the world it designs that the script bible doubles up as the final draft. An entire stage of filmmaking (...) seems to be missing. All the elements - the characters, the way they speak, the voiceovers, the themes, the soundscape, (...) even the visual crescendos - feel like temporary fillers for a future version that never arrives. The result is (...) a painfully inert movie. (...) Faces become surrogates for plot movement; speech is reduced to thought bubbles. Nothing else can explain the perplexing lack of chemistry between the two leads. It's almost as if Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were instructed to read the lines knowing that emotions, like everything else, would be added in post-production. It takes some doing to make actors of their calibre mess up a narrative of passion. (...) If you look really hard, you might see the germ of a full-blooded big-screen experience. Writer-director Ayan Mukerji has the framework in place, but fails at a fundamental screenplay and design level. (...) Isha exists not as a lover so much as a human Alexa; her only job is to robotically ask him questions and follow him around and make sure he's fine. (...) Her superpower seems to be that her reactions are never in sync with the magnitude of an incident. (...) It's a generic fusion of Western style and Eastern substance, (...) like a foreign interpretation of Indian legend'.

Punto debole: dialoghi e sceneggiatura.

* Ranbir Kapoor - Shiva
* Alia Bhatt - Isha
* Amitabh Bachchan - Raghu, il guru (e il narratore)
* Mouni Roy - Junoon

* Nagarjuna - Anish, l'artista (cameo)
* Dimple Kapadia - cameo

Fotografia: V. Manikandan, Pankaj Kumar, Sudeep Chatterjee, Vikash Nowlakha e Patrick Duroux.
Montaggio: Prakash Kurup

CURIOSITÀ

* Nella tradizione hindu, l'astra è un'arma dotata di poteri soprannaturali, forgiata da una specifica divinità. Brahmāstra è l'arma di Brahmā, ed è la più potente.
* Il personaggio interpretato da Shah Rukh Khan si chiama Mohan Bhargav, in omaggio a Mohan Bhargava, protagonista di Swades.
* Riferimenti al cinema indiano: Mr. India.
* Riferimenti all'Italia: Gucci, Prada.

GOSSIP & VELENI

THANK YOU

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'Thank You (...) rides on a one-line premise. (...) It is a simple, straightforward story and holds no major surprises. Thank You is aesthetic in its presentation and has a talented cast. (...) First the merits. Thank You has a protagonist with grey shades, not a squeaky clean hero. (...) Chaitanya shifts easily from the hardworking aspirant to the ruthless CEO. In her brief part, Raashi [Khanna] plays a mature and stifled woman with conviction. (...) Chaitanya’s transformation to fit the part of a teen is remarkable. (...) Malvika [Nair]’s expressive and measured performance is a highlight of the film. She fills the frames with so much warmth without trying too hard. As an idea, it is interesting to explore how one’s life gets shaped not only by friends but also foes. (...) The conversations with the alter ego (...) is (...) an idea that seems interesting at a script level but is not convincing enough on screen. The final transformation, too, appears too good to be true. (...) The writing needed a lot more depth. Thank You begins on a promising note and ends up withering away its chances of being a truly moving and poignant journey'.

CURIOSITÀ

* Le sequenze in esterni a New York sono state in realtà girate in Piemonte (Torino, Stresa, Cuneo), dove la troupe di Thank You ha effettuato le riprese nell'aprile-maggio 2021. Le location sono difficilmente ravvisabili. Ad esempio: nel video del brano Thank You, intorno al minuto 3.30 appare la scena più lunga (brevissima passeggiata di Abhi in una strada cittadina); nel video di E Nimisham, poco prima del minuto 5.20 Abhi entra nella sede della sua società, che è il campus Einaudi dell’Università degli Studi di Torino. Vedi anche Thank You: le riprese in Italia, testo che offre la lista dettagliata delle location e alcune fotografie dei set.
* Riferimenti al cinema indiano: Mahesh Babu, Pokiri, Puri Jagannadh.
* Riferimenti all'Italia: Fiat 500, cucina italiana.
* Film che trattano lo stesso tema: Bachna Ae Haseeno.

GOSSIP & VELENI

SM stenta a creare coinvolgimento emotivo.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'For a film about a remarkable woman who democratized the most popular male-dominated field in the country, Shabaash Mithu has regrettably little to say - except that she's a woman. (...) The Mithali Raj in this movie isn't a person so much as a concept. Her journey is a vessel for a very facile, binary reading of womanhood and gender disparity. (...) The film-making, too, lacks empathy - it refuses to engage with the stillness of self-doubt. Like most Indian hagiographies posing as biopics, it interprets progress as narrative motion. (...) Amit Trivedi's soundtrack is painfully generic. (...) The craft often goes out of its way to look pretentious. (...) Many scenes are strangely conceived. (...) SM has absolutely no sense of time. (...) It looks like there's no more than two years between Mithali Raj's debut as a teenager in 1999 and her comeback to lead the team to the 2017 Women's World Cup final. (...) Changing skin tones are the only cosmetic indication of time passing. (...) Taapsee Pannu's performance, too, suffers from this narrative jetlag. (...) It never looks like Mithali Raj has lived a lot between her innings'.
Rahul Desai, 15.07.22

Firstpost: **
'Mithali [Raj] is a global cricketing icon with accomplishments that could send your head spinning, but director Srijit Mukherji’s biopic fails to note or convey the full blast of her achievements. (...) The film acknowledges Mithali’s role in raising the profile of women’s cricket in India but gives us little idea of the grit that must have helped her along. Shabaash Mithu is also unable to capture the fire on the field that made Mithali Raj the heavyweight that she is. (...) The chemistry and warmth between the two little kids, the sense of humour, innocence and intelligence written into their interactions, (...) make Shabaash Mithu’s opening half hour or so an enjoyable ride. (...) Shabaash Mithu thereafter has an episodic feel and pretensions to a grandeur that it does not possess. The writing becomes progressively weaker and the direction increasingly limp. (...) It does not portray caste accurately, referring to the economic hardships some of the women face and not the discrimination intrinsic to the caste system. (...) Shabaash Mithu does not capture the complexity of circumstances that led to increasing visibility for women’s cricket in India in the run-up to the 2017 Cup: Mithali Raj’s charisma, the live telecast of matches, the advent of the social media that mainstreamed discussions on the neglect of women’s cricket, and so much more. Through all this, Taapsee [Pannu], who has been so much better so often in the past, looks inexplicably distant and wan as Mithu. With such flaccid direction and writing coming her way, who can blame her?'.

GOSSIP & VELENI

* Tribal students lift rugby world cup, Soumyajit Pattnaik, Hindustan Times, 2 ottobre 2007:
'A grand welcome awaits the rugby team of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). The team will arrive here on Wednesday after winning the under-14 Rugby World Cup in London. The tribal boys from KISS lifted the trophy after beating South Africa 19-05 in the final on Saturday. (...) They did not start as favourites to win the tournament, but ultimately scripted a scintillating title victory. The 12-member KISS team, christened as Jungle Crows, was led by Bikash Chandra Murmu. The team comprised of tribal students drawn from various backward regions of the state. Congratulating the team, KISS founder Dr. A. Samanta said it was a matter of pride for the entire state as well as for the country. (...) According to Samanta, the boys learnt the game fast and they were mentally tough to give spirited performances on foreign soil. "There was no pressure or fear factor. We told them to give their hundred per cent on the field. For us, participating in an international tournament was more important than winning or losing. But they could win the trophy", said Samanta. All the students hail from poor families. (...) The training started with professional coaches for thirty tribal students initially and twelve players were ultimately picked up to play in London'.

CURIOSITÀ

* Nel 2019 Jungle Cry fu proiettato all'Ariano International Film Festival di Ariano Irpino (Avellino). Emily Shah presenziò all'evento.

JAYESHBHAI JORDAAR

TRAMA

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: **
'Goes without saying, this is Ranveer [Singh] in an altogether believable, (...) contemporary rural part, that you haven’t seen him perform before. (...) It’s of course essential for an actor to go all over the place with his talent/career. Just that a film going all over the place, alongside, isn’t equally great news. At its core, this is supposed to be a full-on farcical comedy. Only what lies beneath it, i.e. female foeticide, wife beating, etc, make it hard to stick to the intended humour, and the fantasies that follow. The jokes run dry. The road-trip derails. Surely there are gems for moments.  (...) Do these moments add up to a gem of a movie? The attention span simply drops after a point. The picture stretches on'.
Mayank Shekhar, 14.05.22

Film Companion:
'Jayeshbhai Jordaar is gratingly basic. (...) We've moved on, but the film hasn't. The first act is promising. (...) It's (...) nice that Jayesh is a rare beta male in Hindi cinema. (...) He is not designed as a male saviour. He's (...) struggling to be the man society expects him to be. But it's the simplistic writing that undermines [Ranveer] Singh's performance, turning Jayesh into more of a mousey caricature than a good person. The many monologues, in particular, are terribly corny - composed for effect, not feeling. (...) The chase gets repetitive very fast, and the climactic chaos at a hospital (...) looks like the end of a children's film. (...) Some may call the film's Gandhi-esque stance feel-good and necessary in this age of intolerance, but it comes at the cost of the integrity of the cause. It's a classic sign of films that try too hard to be liked and enjoyed - they're even willing to ridicule themselves to get an extra smile or two'.

HUM DO HAMARE DO

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'A vapid and unoriginal social comedy. Somewhere inside, there's a nice story about the core idea of family - but it's buried too deep to find it. (...) We've reached a stage in Hindi film discourse where if a movie is dated and formulaic, baffled viewers like myself tend to wonder if it's perhaps a deliberate ode to old-school Bollywood pulp. But I've no such conflicts about Hum Do Hamare Do, which is gratingly basic on many levels. (...) Happy song after sad song, the film seems to be going through the motions, more focused on following bullet-point structures than being honest about its themes. The performances barely matter'.

TOOLSIDAS JUNIOR

TRAMA

Siamo a Calcutta negli anni novanta.

We auditioned some 150-200 children and then auditioned in combination. We found Varun Buddhadev (who plays Midi) and the energy this boy had was unbelievable. He had to be on set for all 40 days. The way he pulled it off is unbelievable. He trained for two months with Yasin Merchant, who was our snooker consultant in the film. He picked up the game so well. He worked really hard. MISHAN IMPOSSIBLE

Mishan Impossible rientra in quest'ultima categoria.

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'The endearing small-town milieu and sharp humour outweigh the loopholes in this crime comedy. (...) The witty lines keep coming one after the other and most of the gags seem believable in the context of the characters. (...) The film-centered humour is Mishan’s highlight. (...) The film is far from perfect but can leave you with a big smile'.
Sangeetha Devi Dundoo, 01.04.22

Film Companion:
'In Mishan Impossible, Swaroop RSJ, the director, seems to struggle with the comedic mind of Swaroop RSJ, the writer. (...) Swaroop RSJ is most comfortable in the scenes with the children in the first half of the film. He has fun with them and the three child actors are great with their lines. Rarely do we see child actors excel without hamming it. The dialogues, reaction shots, and music work in perfect harmony to give us a mix of laugh-out-loud moments and smile-at-a-bad-joke moments. It's never cringe and always in warmth. And it helps that the film is set in a village far off. We buy their innocence. (...) But it is the investigation and the message-y part of the film that the director is uncomfortable in staging'.

BACHCHHAN PAANDEY

TRAMA

'In 2014, writer-director Karthik Subbaraj gave us the fabulously inventive, superbly funny, genre-melding Jigarthanda. (...) It has taken eight years for the story to find its way to Hindi cinema, which is just as well because Bollywood has mangled it beyond recognition. Bachchhan Paandey is a loud, joyless bore. (...) A bizarrely confused film. (...) Akshay [Kumar] unfortunately is saddled with a sloppy script that is too afraid to take chances with him'.

D A S V I

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: * 1/2
'You needn’t pain yourself looking too much for realism here. This is more of a self-aware, simplistic, pot-pourri Bollywood pic, with songs, comedy, emotions, et al - presumably aimed at a theatrical release, to be consumed by a collective, that’s made it directly to Netflix, though. You sense a lot of Mumbai movies straddling between this confusing cinema-OTT path, lately - something that South/Hollywood blockbuster releases hardly suffer from. It’s a phase, I guess. (...) [Abhishek] Bachchan himself is in a phase of his career, where you see him prolifically changing all possible stripes for a role - in ways that he hadn’t quite leaped the same way, over two decades that he’s been around. (...) What he convincingly adds to it is an understated swag, with sufficient twang - noticeably, never using expletives as a convenient crutch, or missing an obvious beat, or ever overplaying a note. In fact Bachchan, in a novel role, might be the only reason to even sit through this entire film, since that piques some curiosity, surely'.
Mayank Shekhar, 08.04.22

Film Companion:
'Dasvi feels like the kind of movie that will scold you for cringing at it, or for not leaving your brains at home (which is ironically where it will stream). It positions itself as the sort of low-stakes comedy designed to guilt-trip the viewer for 'misreading' humour as jarring mediocrity. (...) It's just juvenile storytelling. Dasvi is neither funny, nor moving, nor insightful, nor cleverly self-aware. In the process, it trivializes everything it touches: gender and caste discrimination, literacy, history, politics, dyslexia, marriage, democracy, rehabilitation. (...) The execution is so half-hearted and derivative that it feels like the adult leader is written as a receptive baboon rather than a human. (...) The only worthwhile thing to come out of Dasvi is the fact that Nimrat Kaur would make for a great sociopath in a dark, twisted film that actually deserves her. When a film is bad, the veneer of entertainment cracks and reveals a pattern of jokes without a punchline. When a film lacks identity, you also start to notice the misguided masculinity seeping through its veins'.

BRO DADDY

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'In his second directorial after Lucifer, Prithviraj chooses to scale down his ambition quite a bit to make a light-hearted family drama. (...) Much of the script is woven around the camaraderie between the father-son duo and their attempts to solve the mess. But the film does not have much of a conflict that could make for a gripping narrative, the only one being that Kurian should not come to know of the ‘accidents’. Almost the entire second half is written in such a way as to delay the inevitable, with most of the scenes being predictable from miles away. A separate comedy track involving event manager Happy (Soubin Shahir) further drags down the narrative, without managing any laughs. Mohanlal appears to be more at ease and seems to be enjoying the role, compared to most of his recent outings. Some of the humour involving him does work, while some other jokes in the movie are tasteless or stale, and fall flat. (...) Whether by design or by accident, the aesthetics of the whole film mirrors that of an advertisement with its settings in carefully-curated, prim and proper upper class homes. (...) A weak, predictable script makes Bro Daddy an underwhelming experience with some bright spots'.
S.R. Praveen, 26.01.22

Film Companion:
'Bro Daddy is a sweet, silly, very likeable movie with lots of laughs and I enjoyed all of that. But there’s something more here. I have rarely seen someone put so much effort into staging a comedy which is usually seen as just a series of jokes and not worthy of being staged. (...) [Prithviraj] really shines as a director. (...) What I also really liked is how he lets the film breathe. The story is about the confusion surrounding two pregnancies. This sort of thing is usually played at a very frantic pace. That does not happen here. Also, in these kinds of movies, the emphasis is mainly on jokes. So the scenes between the jokes are like ‘just do anything and so that we can get to the next joke’. But here the script is solid. (...) The relationships in this film really work and there are very sweet touches. (...) There are small dramatic moments that worked beautifully too. (...) Things are woven organically into the script. (...)  It works because of the script. It works because of the way it’s been handled and because the cast works wonderfully. Mohanlal and Prithviraj share an amazing chemistry'.
