JUNGLE CRY

La storia (vera) narrata in Jungle Cry meritava un film. Perché offriva i presupposti per un interessante incrocio fra tema sportivo e contesto sociale. Perché ai (veri) protagonisti non è mai stato riconosciuto il valore dell'incredibile impresa compiuta. Peccato però che JC sia un prodotto del tutto dimenticabile. Il primo tempo è passabile, ma nel secondo il crollo è completo. La regia (firmata da Sagar Ballary, che in precedenza aveva diretto il delizioso Bheja Fry) e la sceneggiatura non sostengono la trama, e commettono l'enorme, imperdonabile errore di focalizzarsi via via su personaggi secondari - gli allenatori, la fisioterapista, persino la famiglia inglese ospitante - invece di approfondire maggiormente i principali - i giocatori e il fondatore dell'istituto scolastico che li ospita. Eppure c'era parecchio da raccontare, a partire dai ragazzi, appartenenti alle comunità tribali, per cui l'istruzione gratuita significa salvezza dalla povertà. Senza tralasciare la figura encomiabile di Achyuta Samanta, un uomo che ha dedicato la sua vita e le sue risorse alla loro educazione. Che occasione sprecata.

Nel cast il sempre solido Abhay Deol, a dire il vero qui un po' appannato. In generale gli attori hanno potuto fare ben poco con gli sbiaditi personaggi a loro disposizione.

TRAMA

Un allenatore inglese di rugby cerca in India ragazzi da ingaggiare per il campionato del mondo nella categoria under 14, evento che si svolgerà a Londra nel 2007. L'uomo trova i giocatori in Odisha, presso il Kalinga Institute. I futuri campioni sono all'oscuro persino dell'esistenza di uno sport chiamato rugby, e hanno solo quattro mesi di tempo per impararne le regole e allenarsi - abbandonando di punto in bianco l'amatissimo calcio (traditori).

'A grand welcome awaits the rugby team of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). The team will arrive here on Wednesday after winning the under-14 Rugby World Cup in London. The tribal boys from KISS lifted the trophy after beating South Africa 19-05 in the final on Saturday. (...) They did not start as favourites to win the tournament, but ultimately scripted a scintillating title victory. The 12-member KISS team, christened as Jungle Crows, was led by Bikash Chandra Murmu. The team comprised of tribal students drawn from various backward regions of the state. Congratulating the team, KISS founder Dr. A. Samanta said it was a matter of pride for the entire state as well as for the country. (...) According to Samanta, the boys learnt the game fast and they were mentally tough to give spirited performances on foreign soil. "There was no pressure or fear factor. We told them to give their hundred per cent on the field. For us, participating in an international tournament was more important than winning or losing. But they could win the trophy", said Samanta. All the students hail from poor families. (...) The training started with professional coaches for thirty tribal students initially and twelve players were ultimately picked up to play in London'.

* Nel 2019 Jungle Cry fu proiettato all'Ariano International Film Festival di Ariano Irpino (Avellino). Emily Shah presenziò all'evento.

* Il Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences è un istituto scolastico residenziale gratuito riservato alle popolazioni tribali. Si trova a Bhubaneswar (Odisha). Fondato nel 1993 da Achyuta Samanta, nel 2017 ha ricevuto lo status di università.
