La porzione iniziale non è male. Divertente, con una punta di satira che non guasta. Il protagonista è una sorta di parodia della figura del politico arrogante e inaffondabile. Poi la sceneggiatura perde dinamismo e si siede. L'interpretazione di Abhishek Bachchan è godibilissima, ma, quando il suo ruolo si appiattisce, nemmeno lui può far molto per rianimarlo. Nimrat Kaur è un vero spasso e contribuisce in buona parte a vivacizzare il film. Yami Gautam è sempre solida, anche se le tocca un personaggio monodimensionale. Al termine di Dasvi mi sono chiesta: qual è il nocciolo narrativo? Credo sia il valore dell'istruzione, ma a dire il vero non ne sono sicura. Troppi aspetti vengono sfiorati e abbandonati, e, in assenza di una direzione stabile, Dasvi, per quanto guardabile, alla fine risulta inconsistente. Peccato.
TRAMA
Ganga Ram Chaudhary è il primo ministro dello Stato immaginario dell'Harit Pradesh. Coinvolto in pratiche poco pulite, viene arrestato a causa di uno scandalo che riguarda l'istruzione. Bimla, la moglie, occupa temporaneamente il suo ruolo politico, in attesa che il tribunale fissi la cauzione. Ma Bimla ci prova gusto al potere, e di fatto boicotta il marito, il quale, per sfida o per noia, in carcere decide di prepararsi per l'esame di maturità.

'You needn’t pain yourself looking too much for realism here. This is more of a self-aware, simplistic, pot-pourri Bollywood pic, with songs, comedy, emotions, et al - presumably aimed at a theatrical release, to be consumed by a collective, that’s made it directly to Netflix, though. You sense a lot of Mumbai movies straddling between this confusing cinema-OTT path, lately - something that South/Hollywood blockbuster releases hardly suffer from. It’s a phase, I guess. (...) [Abhishek] Bachchan himself is in a phase of his career, where you see him prolifically changing all possible stripes for a role - in ways that he hadn’t quite leaped the same way, over two decades that he’s been around. (...) What he convincingly adds to it is an understated swag, with sufficient twang - noticeably, never using expletives as a convenient crutch, or missing an obvious beat, or ever overplaying a note. In fact Bachchan, in a novel role, might be the only reason to even sit through this entire film, since that piques some curiosity, surely'.

'Dasvi feels like the kind of movie that will scold you for cringing at it, or for not leaving your brains at home (which is ironically where it will stream). It positions itself as the sort of low-stakes comedy designed to guilt-trip the viewer for 'misreading' humour as jarring mediocrity. (...) It's just juvenile storytelling. Dasvi is neither funny, nor moving, nor insightful, nor cleverly self-aware. In the process, it trivializes everything it touches: gender and caste discrimination, literacy, history, politics, dyslexia, marriage, democracy, rehabilitation. (...) The execution is so half-hearted and derivative that it feels like the adult leader is written as a receptive baboon rather than a human. (...) The only worthwhile thing to come out of Dasvi is the fact that Nimrat Kaur would make for a great sociopath in a dark, twisted film that actually deserves her. When a film is bad, the veneer of entertainment cracks and reveals a pattern of jokes without a punchline. When a film lacks identity, you also start to notice the misguided masculinity seeping through its veins'.
