Confesso che le biografie di persone giovani mi fanno una certa impressione. È come se stampassero il timbro concluso, definitivo su vite che hanno ancora tanto da sperimentare e da dare. Penso ad esempio a Mary Kom, film del 2014 dedicato alla celebre campionessa di pugilato, allora solo 32enne, che, dopo la distribuzione della pellicola, vinse la medaglia d'oro ai giochi asiatici 2014, ai giochi asiatici femminili 2017, ai giochi del Commonwealth 2018 e ai mondiali femminili AIBA 2018 (tralascio il bronzo agli AIBA 2019).
Anche Mithali Raj, campionessa di cricket dal curriculum sbalorditivo, è nata nel 1982 - compirà 40 anni in dicembre. Agli inizi di giugno ha annunciato il suo ritiro dalle competizioni internazionali, e dovrebbe continuare a giocare solo a livello nazionale. Questo film racconta la sua storia sino al mondiale femminile del 2017.
Shabaash Mithu è un prodotto poco accattivante. I primi trenta minuti sono deliziosi. Narrano un'amicizia fra due bambine che nasce a lezione di danza e che si consolida sul campo da cricket. Le giovanissime attrici sono adorabili. Nelle due ore successive, la sceneggiatura purtroppo via via si appiattisce. Le tematiche femminili vengono ovviamente prese in considerazione, ma in modo non sempre efficace e talvolta forzato: parecchi spunti interessanti, scarso approfondimento sostanziale. SM stenta a creare coinvolgimento emotivo. Il finale mi ha stupito - non conoscendo la carriera sportiva di Mithali, non me l'aspettavo.
L'interpretazione di Taapsee Pannu si limita ad oscillare dalla modalità grave a quella addolorata. Vijay Raaz, che è sempre convincente, è costretto ad enunciare solo secche battute seriose e non gli è mai data l'opportunità di condividere un dialogo naturale con qualcuno. Non posso credere che una colonna sonora così scialba sia firmata da Amit Trivedi (cosa gli avete fatto??). Le sequenze sportive sono troppo generiche.
TRAMA
Mithu e Noorie sono due grandi amiche, entrambe dotate giocatrici di cricket. Purtroppo Noorie è costretta dal padre a sposarsi giovanissima e ad abbandonare l'attività sportiva. Mithu viene selezionata per gli allenamenti professionali in ambito nazionale. Riuscirà ad entrare in squadra e a battere un nugolo di primati. Ma il suo obiettivo è (anche) il riconoscimento del valore del cricket femminile.

'For a film about a remarkable woman who democratized the most popular male-dominated field in the country, Shabaash Mithu has regrettably little to say - except that she's a woman. (...) The Mithali Raj in this movie isn't a person so much as a concept. Her journey is a vessel for a very facile, binary reading of womanhood and gender disparity. (...) The film-making, too, lacks empathy - it refuses to engage with the stillness of self-doubt. Like most Indian hagiographies posing as biopics, it interprets progress as narrative motion. (...) * Mi chiedo se alcuni eventi raccontati nel film siano accaduti realmente o non siano licenze cinematografiche. Ad esempio la scena del chiodo (spero finzione), l'incomprensibile ostilità delle compagne di squadra e della capitana, gli antidolorifici sottratti, il tiro al bersaglio con le palline, eccetera. Se tutto vero, è abbastanza mortificante. In caso contrario, non ne capisco la necessità: non era meglio approfondire le tematiche principali invece di perder tempo così?
