DUNKI

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'Taapsee Pannu (...) has as much a role to die for. And she’s as good as it gets. SRK 3.0, on his part, cracking it in 2023, is the most competent we’ve seen him on screen, ever - altogether shorn of his usual mannerisms and tics (this grimace, that laughter) we’ve known and many have loved him for decades. It’s almost as if he graduated from another acting school, while on hiatus (for four years) from the big screen. And he looks his best, when his character ages to his actual self, that is, pushing 60. (...) Have to say, this is still better than Sanju. (...) In the sense of its scope and scale, to begin with. The film encompasses several lives and ambitions, with scenes after scenes - either taking the story forward, or getting deeper into characters. All of it in the interest of sunny entertainment, as the family drama breathlessly alternates between romance, song, action, with comedy at the base, also shining a light on NRIs (non-resident Indians), who have been SRK’s own core audience-base for long. There is just so much going on that I felt like viewing Dunki the second time on might help digest this overboiled egg better. But there is also so much that doesn’t land - from jokes to the general jostling - that watching it again, so soon, might be a bit much. Even as you’re better off, either way, wholly suspending disbelief and cynicism, simultaneously. (...) Dunki is therefore a film on immigration at a time in history, when world politics is strongly centred on xenophobia and closing borders. (...) It retains the hallmark of the Hirani-Joshi partnership - their sugarcoating of bitter pills, through characters/performances, situational comedy, and idealism. Lensing the most tragic issues with the bearable lightness of being amusing, all through. (...) You sense Dunki trying too hard to fit into the funky template. What you can’t deny is the originality of its idea, while most blockbusters of 2023, the post-pandemic year that audiences truly re-embraced the theatres, have chiefly been regurgitative action set-pieces. (...) Stepping out of the cinema, I was feeling a tad bit better. That’s enough, frankly'.
Mayank Shekhar, 22.12.23

Film Companion:
'Watching a Rajkumar Hirani movie in 2023 is like meeting a popular childhood professor. (...) Sometime during this meeting, you realise that it's your memory of him that's entertaining. You're only seeing what you want - and hope - to see. He might be the same, but the world around him has changed. Dunki is that meeting. The issue isn't immediately obvious. Instead, it's steeped in a sort of slow-burning disappointment. (...) At first, the Hirani-isms feel reassuring. (...) The scene-stealing Vicky Kaushal becomes (...) a tragic remainder of life in a playground of movie tropes. It doesn't take long, however, for the lack of depth to emerge. (...) Most of the jokes (...) just don't land. (...) These little vignettes aren't smart enough for Dunki to act meaningful. If anything, they trivialise the drama while trying to diffuse it. A bigger problem with Dunki is that it's also a Shah Rukh Khan film. On paper, he plays the quintessential Hirani hero: An outsider who repairs his new setting as much as the setting repairs him. (...) He is a custom-fitted saviour-charmer-leader-chiller, (...) popular for being popular. (...) There is no before or after to his persona. The intrusive SRK hero usurps the humanitarian Hirani hero. Even though the film has multiple characters, a lot of it seems to be designed around Khan - and how to riff on his image. (...) Hardy also cries a lot - like most Khan protagonists do - to emphasise the alt-masculinity that the actor has come to represent. But today's Khan is not a convincing crier. (...) As a result, almost none of the emotional parts work. (...) The writing isn't great to begin with, but it's hard to look past the superstar trapped in the character. Hirani, as a director, has a track record of camouflaging the pop-cultural face with a satirical facade. But Dunki is probably his weakest film, because there's at once too much of Hirani, and not enough of him'.
Rahul Desai, 21.12.23

Raja Sen:
'Dunki tries too desperately to make viewers cry. A badly plotted mess, with Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani hamming it up. Taapsee Pannu and Anil Grover are good, the writing is not. The film ends with a PowerPoint presentation - but it should have been replaced with one'.

GOSSIP & VELENI

* Il 2023 è stato un anno eccezionale per SRK. Ricapitolando:
- Pathaan (seconda posizione lista incassi 2023 film hindi e film indiani) è il più patinato, il Re è stupendissimo, ma ci vorrebbero qualche aggiustatina alla sceneggiatura e dialoghi più briosi;
- Jawan (prima posizione incassi hindi e indiani) è il più coraggioso (considerando i tempi), con un personaggio (Vikram, quello vero) stratosferico, ma ci vorrebbero qualche aggiustatina alla sceneggiatura e all'interpretazione di SRK nel ruolo di Azad, e qualche deciso colpo d'ascia ai piagnistei;
- Dunki (quinta posizione incassi hindi, ottava posizione incassi indiani) è il più interessante, ma ci vorrebbe qualche aggiustatina alla trama;

Purtroppo i pregi finiscono qui.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day:
'The film is shot almost entirely within closed quarters, where the incredibly few characters live, or die. In fact, the movie is so self-contained in its spaces you stick only to its insulated story line, not once its time or place setting, let alone the society that surrounds it, or even semblance of a larger politics. (...) The camera, (...) stepping in and out of rooms, zooming in and out of characters, calls for skilful photography, to costantly create and release tension. (...) Purely as a performer, she's [Taapsee Pannu] doubtlessly in her element in a double-role. She's possibly the most thriller-happy, female lead/star we've had in Bollywood. (...) Blurr is what should qualify as a 'why-', instead of 'who-dunnit'.'
Mayank Shekhar, 07.12.22

Film Companion:
'The execution is too self-serious to realize the complexity of its themes. The movie is too preoccupied with being scary, suspenseful, stylish or clever to empathise with - or even understand - the humans within. (...) [Taapsee] Pannu's Gayatri experiences a whole lot of trauma as a person. (...) But her performance makes it hard to invest in Gayatri beyond the immediate threat to her life. (...) Blurr is all design and no instinct. (...) The perpetually jolted expression rarely conveys a broader depth. It's also awkward writing. It's often about what's happening to her within a moment, in isolation to the rest of the story; the tone is totally different in the next scene, with some sequences entirely missing transitions and chunks of exposition. (...) There is very little emotional continuity, as though the makers are only concerned with the plot rather than the mental consequences of being stalked by a psychopath. (...) This dissonance is jarring, the jump-scares are desperate, and it only goes to show that the film lacks a sense of touch despite being a giant metaphor about sensory connections. (...) The use of darkness (...) is gimmicky. (...) The world-building feels incomplete'.
Rahul Desai, 09.12.22

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* Taapsee Pannu talks about her horror thriller Blurr, Sudeshna Banerjee, The Telegraph, 26 dicembre 2022:
'Blurr is your first film as producer. What made you turn one?
I always planned to turn producer but this film did not feature in the plan. Two months after signing the film I realised I needed a bit more than just being an actor. I wanted the film to be made in and look a certain way. As an actor, you can’t really command a lot of things. So I decided to step in as a co-producer so I could actually ask for things beyond acting - right from casting to the technical departments or how the film needs to look... I asked Vishal (Rana, the producer) who had the script, to let me come on board. Once that happened, I asked him if we could ask Ajay (Bahl) sir to direct it. I had seen his Section 375 and had messaged him saying I wanted to work with him.
This is a remake of the Spanish film Julia’s Eyes. Did you watch the original?
I had seen it in 2018 when I was doing Badla, which was based on another film (The Invisible Ghost) written by him (Oriol Paulo). I was so blown away by his writing that I watched everything he had written. So when this came my way, I did not need any description and said yes.
What kind of changes were made for the Indian adaptation?
Sometimes European thrillers are too cold for Indian audiences. At a human level there is very little takeaway. So we brought in the humanness in the film where you have a certain mental condition to take back home. It’s also a human drama in addition to being a thriller. That humanness has been added in the script. There is a kind of, I wouldn’t say social commentary, but something that will make you look at society and certain people in a different way. (...)
In the scene where they [le due gemelle] are together, the opaque lens in Gautami’s eyes helped viewers distinguish the two.
Getting those lenses, which made me actually blind, really helped me perform. I tried leaving them behind for a couple of scenes, thinking VFX would take care of it later. But it was just not working. So I chose to actually go “blind”. If you’ve seen me banging into things, that is because I genuinely can’t see there. Only the parts where I am climbing up and down stairs are where I could actually see a little through my bandages so I didn’t actually trip and injure myself. Then shooting would stop (laughs). But other than that, every sequence where you see me blind or blindfolded, I actually can’t see anything. The only thing I could sense is where the light was coming from.
How disconcerting was it to shoot like that? Gautami, who lived alone in her house, had to know her way around, right?
We had shot a few sequences of Gayatri in that house before I shot Gautami. Since Gayatri was turning blind slowly, I could take the liberty of being a new blind person who just doesn’t know how to deal with this blindness. When I turned blind for Gautami, I could not be bumping into things as it is her house. I was pretty familiar with that house by then.
Could you switch on your other sensory faculties when the camera was switched on?
In between shots and takes, it was just too cumbersome to remove those lenses and that blindfold all the time, plus it is difficult to go in and out of the blind zone. So most of the time, I kept the lenses on so I could get used to them. It was very uncomfortable at the start. You get anxious and impatient that you cannot use your eyes suddenly. But that heightened my other senses. I feel I started listening more and thinking in a more balanced way. My mental focus became sharper.
You were having to react to even wind or sound. Were those provided to you as cue?
Since I was not so used to being blind, certain things I needed a cue on. So I needed someone behind the camera to tell me that at this moment, someone passed. But for the wind, I had to react to myself because I could feel it on my body. Also there are a few sequences using things other than sound, where we wanted the audience to experience even visually. When I lose my eyes, you don’t see either on the screen. We wanted the audience to get into the world where the protagonist, through whom you are watching the film, sees what you see, but when she does not you also do not. That was an experiential-level writing.
You screened the film for a visually-challenged audience. How did that go?
I was not prepared for that kind of response. We opened it first to them. I reached there not knowing how they would respond as I am not clear how they understand a film without watching it. There is an audio description for the visually challenged. But we are so used to visualising a film that I don’t know how they process it. It was crazier than a singlescreen audience response. They were screaming, shouting, cheering... (...) The questions they put were so nuanced. They even asked me about the software on my phone that I used! I was in tears by the end of it'.

DOBAARAA

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'This is the least likely among what we've come to expect of an 'Anurag Kashyap' film. (...) It's something that at least I'm unaware has ever been attempted in a Hindi film before. (...) How does this (...) land on the lay audience? In a way that it's instantly accessible. (...) Despite the plot (...) Dobaaraa is a pretty straight and simple film, with a trippy background score, and even a proper Hindi soundtrack'.
Mayank Shekhar, 21.08.22

Film Companion:
'Dobaaraa makes a case for mental well-being rather than just physical healing. The occupants of this film seem to be fighting the genre itself in pursuit of a humanity - and a sense of continuity - that's often denied to them by narrative gimmickry. (...) It's a fairly faithful adaptation of Mirage, so a lot of its hidden complexities and surface-level enterprise can be traced back to the DNA of the Spanish film. (...) Despite going through serious upheavals, the character of Antara feels curiously flat. Taapsee Pannu's presence is urgent, but Antara often looks to be reacting to the tricks of the narrative instead of the circumstances of a life. (...) Her quest to be believed (...) feels mechanical. As does her readymade bond with the cop. (...) This isn't exactly a suspenseful movie, which is why the film-making falters while teasing the preconceived notions of the audience. (...) Doobaara engages more than it entertains. (...) Its unwitting depth is the mark of a good genre movie - it becomes what you want it to be'.
Rahul Desai, 19.08.22

Cinema Hindi: *** 1/2.

SM stenta a creare coinvolgimento emotivo.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'For a film about a remarkable woman who democratized the most popular male-dominated field in the country, Shabaash Mithu has regrettably little to say - except that she's a woman. (...) The Mithali Raj in this movie isn't a person so much as a concept. Her journey is a vessel for a very facile, binary reading of womanhood and gender disparity. (...) The film-making, too, lacks empathy - it refuses to engage with the stillness of self-doubt. Like most Indian hagiographies posing as biopics, it interprets progress as narrative motion. (...) Amit Trivedi's soundtrack is painfully generic. (...) The craft often goes out of its way to look pretentious. (...) Many scenes are strangely conceived. (...) SM has absolutely no sense of time. (...) It looks like there's no more than two years between Mithali Raj's debut as a teenager in 1999 and her comeback to lead the team to the 2017 Women's World Cup final. (...) Changing skin tones are the only cosmetic indication of time passing. (...) Taapsee Pannu's performance, too, suffers from this narrative jetlag. (...) It never looks like Mithali Raj has lived a lot between her innings'.
Rahul Desai, 15.07.22

Firstpost: **
'Mithali [Raj] is a global cricketing icon with accomplishments that could send your head spinning, but director Srijit Mukherji’s biopic fails to note or convey the full blast of her achievements. (...) The film acknowledges Mithali’s role in raising the profile of women’s cricket in India but gives us little idea of the grit that must have helped her along. Shabaash Mithu is also unable to capture the fire on the field that made Mithali Raj the heavyweight that she is. (...) The chemistry and warmth between the two little kids, the sense of humour, innocence and intelligence written into their interactions, (...) make Shabaash Mithu’s opening half hour or so an enjoyable ride. (...) Shabaash Mithu thereafter has an episodic feel and pretensions to a grandeur that it does not possess. The writing becomes progressively weaker and the direction increasingly limp. (...) It does not portray caste accurately, referring to the economic hardships some of the women face and not the discrimination intrinsic to the caste system. (...) Shabaash Mithu does not capture the complexity of circumstances that led to increasing visibility for women’s cricket in India in the run-up to the 2017 Cup: Mithali Raj’s charisma, the live telecast of matches, the advent of the social media that mainstreamed discussions on the neglect of women’s cricket, and so much more. Through all this, Taapsee [Pannu], who has been so much better so often in the past, looks inexplicably distant and wan as Mithu. With such flaccid direction and writing coming her way, who can blame her?'.

Mishan Impossible rientra in quest'ultima categoria.

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'The endearing small-town milieu and sharp humour outweigh the loopholes in this crime comedy. (...) The witty lines keep coming one after the other and most of the gags seem believable in the context of the characters. (...) The film-centered humour is Mishan’s highlight. (...) The film is far from perfect but can leave you with a big smile'.
Sangeetha Devi Dundoo, 01.04.22

Film Companion:
'In Mishan Impossible, Swaroop RSJ, the director, seems to struggle with the comedic mind of Swaroop RSJ, the writer. (...) Swaroop RSJ is most comfortable in the scenes with the children in the first half of the film. He has fun with them and the three child actors are great with their lines. Rarely do we see child actors excel without hamming it. The dialogues, reaction shots, and music work in perfect harmony to give us a mix of laugh-out-loud moments and smile-at-a-bad-joke moments. It's never cringe and always in warmth. And it helps that the film is set in a village far off. We buy their innocence. (...) But it is the investigation and the message-y part of the film that the director is uncomfortable in staging'.

LOOOP LAPETA

LL è in sostanza un inno all'ottimismo. Di questi tempi ne abbiamo bisogno.

TRAMA

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'The Hindi adaptation (...) reveals a new dimension: the “running of age” story. Which is to say a character comes of age, except the journey is literal. (...) Everything is outlined: the girl, the guy, their relationship, the stakes. (...) They’re happy together but struggling to reach the next stage. (...) So she runs - towards the future. (...) Too much context is an Indian habit. It’s ironic that the makers want to leave nothing to chance in a film about chance. (...) Looop Lapeta gets the spirit of adaptation right. It adds without subtracting. (...) And it breathes. The frenetic blood rush of the original is supplied by a beating heart. (...) The popping colours, frame-rate trickery and flashy music have good reason to exist too. (...) Stripped of its kinetic identity, this is essentially a story of a girl who is forced to confront the compatibility of her soulmate. The running, the situations and the characters on the way represent her emotional hurdles. But having a beating heart also implies living longer. The tight 83-minute ‘run’ time of the original balloons to 131 minutes here, with the frills coming at the cost of thrills. (...) In other words, the film’s strength is also its weakness. But if one were to view Looop Lapeta as more of an architectural human drama than a pacey thriller, the uneven pace may not feel as jarring. The source material becomes a skeleton in a body that sacrifices momentum for mass. Or in runner parlance, speed for smarts. (...) Bhatia’s film-making stays inventive even when the writing lags. It’s a brave move to make a movie so ambivalent about substance. (...) Taapsee Pannu has been Hindi cinema’s go-to actress for physical roles. (...) The result is a weird, good-humoured turn: one that doesn’t mind throwing it all at the wall to see what sticks. (...) Tahir Raj Bhasin (...) is adequately elastic as Satya, adding over-the-top comedy to his growing repertoire of genre acting. Their oddball chemistry is a nice change from the self-seriousness of romantic dramas. It also humanizes Looop Lapeta’s flamboyant exterior. (...) Life has been one long and acidic loop - of running, surviving, learning and starting all over again - since early 2020. Every wave is experienced with knowledge of what went wrong the last time. (...) In that sense, the timing of Looop Lapeta - a tale of timing - is just right. (...) Satya and Savi’s crazy world is ours. They aspire to be us, not vice versa. We don’t look too shabby on screen after all'.

SAAND KI AANKH

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: **
'There's something so desperately missing in the general rhythm and tone of this film that beyond a point, not just the audience, even the filmmakers seem unable to decide on whether this is a high-octane melodrama (...). Or a sweet, subtle rural story hinged on minimalist, authentic realism, packed with lighter moments (...). This isn't to suggest whatsoever that the two forms (of story-telling) are exclusive to each other. Hell, no. But melodrama, I reckon, truly works in its rationing - to rise to an occasion; to make a monument out of a moment. It loses impact with repetition. Unless, perhaps, the whole movie is consistently that - a drama version of slapstick humour, as it were. Frankly, this film lacks that sense of occasion. You want the big moments to hold. But they fly in and fly past, before you can feel anything at all. What with that cheap-ass, loud background score to start with - insecurely calling attention to every scene, driving you semi-nuts, instead of letting such compelling characters cruise you through a script that's got everything to subtly and surely pull it off, with all possible mainstream accoutrements, so to say. (...) Director Prakash Jha playing the household patriarch, of course, stands out as the unusual casting choice. (...) Saand Ki Aankh, as you're aware, is essentially centred on two extremely young female lead actors in Bollywood (Bhumi Pednekar, 30; Taapsee Pannu, 32), playing perhaps two of the oldest female lead characters on screen, ever. Both Chandro and Prakashi are way past usual retirement age, to embark on altogether fresh starts. What strikes you about both Pednekar and Pannu isn't as much the fact that they can get the old-age mannerisms right - in terms of walk/talk, posture, prosthetics, etc. - as how effortlessly they seem to slip into characters so far removed from their own. And they do it with a level of excitement and extreme conviction that it instantly spills over from the screen. Pednekar, from the sense I get, has in fact built her entire career so far (...) splendidly adapting to parts that are almost polar-opposites to her social self. She is indisputably a powerhouse of talent, with a knack to go the extra mile. So is Pannu, of course. But at no point do you find them jealously jostling for audience's appreciation. It's almost like they've signed a non-competitive clause, to complement each other on screen, rather than show off who's the real boss-lady here. Both are. Or, rather both aren't, since the film is so much about two vulnerable champions, smartly railing against the world, and slyly taking it on as well. As a subject, it is as good as it gets. (...) No doubt, you are already in love with the two delicately deadly Dadis on screen. How can you not? They exude such natural warmth, and rare sense of joy, despite having been dealt the worst cards ever. Which makes me feel worse that you don't end up loving the movie as much. But then again, that's me; you can always give it a shot'.
Mayank Shekhar, 25.10.19

Film Companion:
'I’d like to believe that the film chooses this loud language because shooting is not a subtle sport - you see a target, you aim for it, you hit it with a big bang. It’s noisy, eventful and either black or white. But the real reason isn’t half as thoughtful. The director is Tushar Hiranandani, a long-time Bollywood writer who deals in either crass comedy (the Housefull, Masti and Dhamaal franchises) or screechy melodrama (Ek Villain, Half Girlfriend). There is no middle ground. As a result, Saand Ki Aankh is made as a defiant dramedy - the drama is such that it’s derived from comedy, and the comedy is such that it’s diluted by drama. (...) We belong to a culture that thrives on embracing cheap humour when confronted with uncomfortable truths. The treatment of SKA is merely an extension of this social ailment. (...) Hiranandani and his writers don’t want us to think; they just want us to accept the novelty of the narrative, irrespective of what they do with it. (...) The makers are used to turning sex into a joke. Here they turn women into the joke - ignorant, illiterate, ‘cute’ but slumdog champions so everything is forgiven. By making such a spectacle out of gender disparity, they end up reiterating the very prejudices that the film tries to expose. (...) Young actresses Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar spiritedly play the “shooter dadis,” iffy prosthetics and all, in a casting decision that urges the viewer to focus on what they stand for rather than who they are. (...) You can sense the screenplay (by Balwinder Singh Janjhua) desperately battling the glitzy dialogue and shabby direction to make the film better than a simplistic she-v/s-he sermon. But the screenplay succeeds lesser than it fails. The problem with men making films about winsome womanhood is that everything becomes an exercise in overcompensation. They write female protagonists as characters who say things that we should hear, not as women who start hearing their own voices. The emotional outbursts play to the gallery, filled with lines designed by men who want audiences to react rather than their protagonists to act. In order to atone for their own deep-rooted masculinity, male filmmakers tend to exaggerate every aspect of these stories - feminism, sexism, bigotry, drama, comedy, life'.
Rahul Desai, 25.10.19

Cast:

* Taapsee Pannu - Prakashi Tomar
* Bhumi Pednekar - Chandro Tomar

* Vineet Kumar Singh (elegantissimo) - Dr. Yashpal, allenatore

Regia: Tushar Hiranandani
Sceneggiatura: Balwinder Singh Janjua, basata sulla vita di Chandro Tomar e Prakashi Tomar
Colonna sonora: Vishal Mishra
Traduzione del titolo: bull's eye
Anno: 2019

CURIOSITA'

* Riferimenti a Bollywood: Akshay Kumar, Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi, Mother India, Aamir Khan.

GOSSIP & VELENI

RECENSIONI

Hindustan Times: **
'The facts are stupendous, but director Jagan Shakti decides to go fast and fictional, creating an underdog story that - while often likeable - plays out like a fable. There are cute scenes, but it is worrisome that a film about several incredibly talented women constantly plays up their stereotypical womanhood more than their scientific acumen. (...) Vidya Balan is wonderful as Tara Shinde, a scientist who must juggle her research with wifely and motherly duties. She gives the narrative a boisterous can-do spirit that is eventually well matched by Akshay Kumar’s Dhawan. Kumar is typically solid as he encourages these ladies to shine - he clearly wants this to be his Chak De India - but he is gifted too many of the best lines. Meanwhile the other actresses are given ‘types’ rather than characters. (...) The problem with creating ‘types’ as underdogs - especially in a film that will largely be mistaken for real-life - is that while asking audiences not to judge these female characters, ironically enough the filmmakers have created them (and their quirks) by judging them. Films about science have to simplify the subject - films about rocket-science doubly so - but here things are brought down to a regretfully basic level. So while there are times Mission Mangal plays out as a pleasant enough entertainer with a message, complete with a caricaturish villain (Dalip Tahil with an unholy accent) there are other times everything feels like too much of a stretch - even the runtime. The film becomes a saddening bore'.
Raja Sen, 15.08.2019

Mid-Day: ***
'This is actually a pretty sweet, syrupy film. (...) To a point that you may even forget sometimes that it's entirely a space-mission movie to begin with. And, indeed India's first of its kind. (...) What we do know about scientists? (...) How do you make such folk interesting enough for a feature film; more importantly reaching out to widest audiences, which is toughest still? Through humanizing stories of scientists on screen. (...) Basically make this about people like us. (...) Frankly, the lovely Balan as the deeply passionate ISRO project director, juggling her job with jostling with her family, is all you need to be drawn to this film, that mixes home science with rocket science. (...) As for the actual science itself, it seems like a far too simplistic, superficial series of eureka moments of epiphany. Here's the thing though - in case that bothers you. It did bore me in parts. You know where this film is headed. Most movies suffer from what's called the 'curse of the second half'-set-up all great, but falling flat on the face by the end of it. This is a rare one that reverses that principle. It gets much better towards the end! Until then, you've hopefully been entertained through comedy and drama'.

B A D L A

Intrigante e ben fatto.

RECENSIONI

Hindustan Times: ***
'Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla features a slick, relentlessly twisty cat-and-mouse game played with both cat and mouse sitting in the same room, strategising across a table. (...) Ghosh’s efficiently assembled film keeps tension at a boil through twist and counter-twist, but the finalé is easy to see coming, principally because we expect certain actors to have the last laugh. Still, there is something to be said for this briskly paced thriller that doesn’t slow down to spoon-feed its audience. Badla never loses grip. (...) Credit to Ghosh and his actors for keeping things tight. Besides Bachchan and Pannu, Amrita Singh stands out as a mother with a missing son. The film is set in Scotland, and this considerably enhances the look and feel, as cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay highlights telling details with unmistakable sharpness. (...) Badla remains an engaging film, and while we can blame Ghosh for casting Bachchan and somewhat spoiling the climax, he can’t possibly be blamed for casting that man in a role that requires a lot of talking. Amitabh Bachchan has been in the movies for fifty years now, and whatever he says, we’re listening'.
