CHUP

- un thriller originale, ma è un peccato che l'assassino venga rivelato a metà film, stratagemma narrativo sempre più comune (la giustificazione: la trama non è centrata su chi fa cosa, bensì sul come e sul perché lo fa);
- una storia d'amore dall'estetica morbida e sognante;
- a tratti una divertente black comedy;
- una riflessione sulla critica cinematografica, amatoriale inclusa, e sulle motivazioni che dovrebbero spingere un regista a realizzare i suoi progetti;
- un'incursione nel mondo dell'industria hindi, da tempo nell'occhio del ciclone (e i professionisti del settore sembrano ripiegarsi su se stessi per trovare una conferma del valore del proprio lavoro);

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: *** 1/2
'Frankly, the premise of this serial-killer picture is so frickin’ delightfully absurd that you simply fall for the idea, first - because, how can you not? (...) This is deeply unique/original. As are films, in general, of writer-director R. Balki. That, I suspect, essentially emanate from a terse, one-line idea. (...) Typical to his style, what Balki tightly weaves around his thought is actually a lightness of mainstream touch. (...) Now, practically anyone with fingers and a cellphone is a film reviewer. Which is what makes Chup a really well-timed, contemporary film - if you expand its inherent point to the ‘troll culture’ that surrounds us. With folks on social media, in particular, callously directing sickly barbs at public figures in general, without a thought at how it affects those the darts land on. I saw callous movie critics in this meta movie, as merely a metaphor. And yes, it did make me think of my job a little more - a reason this film feels so, so close to home'.
Mayank Shekhar, 24.09.22

Firstpost: ** 1/2
'In the first half of Chup, Balki succeeds in creating an atmosphere of intrigue, with a blend of a deliberately languorous pace that is a curious contrast to the urgency of the police’s task. (...) The film’s grip loosens considerably as it rolls along, due to the weakness of the love saga at the centre of these proceedings. (...) Shreya and Dulquer are both capable of fine acting, but any emotional resonance they might have achieved is overshadowed by the director’s preoccupation with ambience and appearance. (...) Its critique of criticism is largely on point, taking on financially corrupt reviewers, those who act like astrologers predicting a film’s box-office fate, and those with insufficient knowledge of cinema, all this without coming across as a condescending lecture and without caricaturing individual critics or lampooning the job. (...) Sunny Deol is unusually restrained in Chup until a Gadar-esque moment that ruins everything for him and is strangely out of character for the policeman he plays. (...) Chup never fully rises above being interesting in theory. (...) Despite its positives, Chup’s aspirations to grandeur make it far less engaging than its uncommon theme might suggest. Balki’s film fails to grasp the essence of Guru Dutt’s magic, which was rooted not merely in the beauty of visuals and music, but in the ability to use both to capture the pain, mischief, sense of humour, love and longing of his characters with empathy. In contrast, Chup feels distant from its characters and uninvolved'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* You're not becoming a critic to tear cinema down, intervista concessa da Raja Sen a Patcy N., pubblicata da Rediff il 19 ottobre 2022:
'How did the idea of Chup happen? Whose idea was it?
It was very much Balki's idea. He is someone I have reviewed in the past, often not very favourably. (...) At some point, he called me and said, why don't you come to the office, I want to discuss an idea with you. I used to be in advertising many, many, years ago and Balki is an absolute legend in the advertising world. I thought this would be interesting. When I met him, he told me that there's an idea of a film about somebody killing film critics. Because I had just quit film criticism, it felt it was really well timed. It felt like a very meaty idea. I don't think people have made films on critics, especially not this subject. He said I would like you to be a part of this. I said let's start. I had done film writing in the past, but those films had been written and I came on board to change lines... it was not collaborative. I was looking forward to creatively collaborating with a cool person and film-maker.
Tell us about the writing process. (...)
I was frequently called to put on the critic's hat and scrutinise the work. (...) Balki and I primarily think in English. Chup unapologetically has a fair bit of English because we thought it was real for the characters. It's about an artiste and a critic. After a while, I started wearing the artiste's hat, and much more sympathetic to them, saying, 'We should be harder on the critics.' Balki, on the other hand, would say 'No, no, the critics are right.' So it was a very interesting process. Balki even went back and read pretty much every single word I've said about him (in film reviews), and a lot of it is not very complimentary. That was quite an eye opener for me that he, as a creator, collaborator and artiste, was very open to understanding where I was coming from. (...) He realised that critics become critics only because they love cinema. You're not becoming a critic to tear cinema down, you become a critic because the job entails watching a 100 films a year, out of which there will be five or six good films. It's really a glutton for punishment, but you're also optimistic and want to see exciting things. (...)
Whose idea was it to make Guru Dutt the reference point? And why Guru Dutt and his film Kaagaz Ke Phool?
We were thinking about artistes, who have been hit hard by criticism. That was the first name that popped to mind because when Kaagaz Ke Phool happened, it was a commercial failure. That might not have hurt Guru Duttsaab as much as the fact that it was critically savaged. People said it was a failure, they called it self-indulgent. It was a very personal film for him. When we look back at that film, decades later, we love it and call it a classic. But at that point of time, it led to a great depression and introspection. It's not a coincidence that he did not direct again. He was such a prolific director, making films every one or two years, but he decided not to direct any more. It can't have been a coincidence; he must have been deeply hurt. So we were trying to explore that... somebody, who made a film that is (later) universally acknowledged as a classic, is one of the greatest Hindi films of all time... For a man to pour himself so personally into the film, and then to find it failing. Guru Dutt is very much a part of the film. (...)
Did you have a say in the casting?
Yes. The danger of getting a critic on board is that he will meddle and give his opinion everywhere! Balki was such a generous collaborator, he would listen to all of us. I was definitely a part of all the conversations we had about art direction or costumes... I was a very excited and hungry fly on the wall. I even sat in on distributor meetings, which is the most surreal thing in the world. When we wrote the title character, I remember looking at Balki and saying, 'Oh my God. This is such a difficult part, who will play it?' (...) Dulquer is such a special performer. He lifts the material. He came on set with so much conviction and intensity. He was also clear that this was something far out of his comfort zone. (...) Shooting with him was a great experience. He's very nice to hang out with, very cine literate, very eager to embrace feedback. He would do a shot, and ask pretty much everyone around him how good it was, what he could do better'.

EK VILLAIN RETURNS

Intendiamoci: i difetti spuntano come gramigna in ogni sequenza.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: * 1/2
'The female leads in the film (Disha Patani included), in various stages of undress, generally have the best lines. (...) Two solid action sequences; one set in the Mumbai metro, the other inside a car. Some of the locations, while decidedly local, are outstanding. To be fair to the director (Mohit Suri), (...) he’s blessed with fine music-video aesthetics. And what better reason to listen to songs, shot on massive budgets, than a Bollywood movie, right?'.
Mayank Shekhar, 30.07.22

Film Companion:
'Ek Villain Returns (...) is always a little worse than you think it is. (...) One twist is always more nonsensical than the previous one. In fact, this is the sort of stunningly bad film that leaves you wondering whether you're impressed or defeated. (...) Of all the crimes EVR commits, its inability to hide its atrocities behind a banging soundtrack is easily the most heinous. What has the world come to if the music of a Mohit Suri movie is as invisible as its writing?'.
Rahul Desai, 29.07.22

MILI

Senza cellulare.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'As a survival thriller alone, Mili is high-pitched and mostly effective. The sound design is terrific, simulating an endless cycle of danger and dread. (...) The visual transitions are smart and well-timed. (...) The tight close-ups of the girl's withering face are excessive, but the rhythm of the editing creates a sharp psychological pull. (...) Janhvi Kapoor's fourth author-backed role of a short career is perhaps her most impressive so far. (...) Not everything works, though. Xavier milks the genre for all its worth. (...) Some of the suspense devices (...) are designed purely to toy with the viewers. (...) The essence of Mili, however, has little to do with its status as a survival thriller. At its core, the film is a slow-burning sociocultural drama. (...) The murky relationship between morality and gender shapes the central conflict of the story'.
Rahul Desai, 04.11.22

Firstpost: ** 1/2
'The changes introduced in the Hindi screenplay (...) place a spotlight on one of the biggest failings of contemporary Hindi cinema: its aversion to examining tricky social and political issues, especially in the mainstream arena. (...) As someone who has watched the original (...) Mili is fairly engaging. (...) That said, the dilution of the sensitive equations in the original definitely takes its toll on this one. What further pulls it down are the many minutes needlessly added to the narrative. Mili has also retained the flaws of the original. (...) Janhvi possesses an Everywomanness that is useful in this role, and succeeds in portraying Mili’s sweet simplicity. (...) It is a pity that Mathukutty Xavier agreed to direct a watered down Hindi version of his Helen. Mili is (...) too afraid of ruffling feathers to risk clarity in its point about caste'.
Anna MM Vetticad, 04.11.22

GOSSIP & VELENI

* [Spoiler]:
- strano che il padre di Mili lasci andar via Sameer da solo senza pretendere di conoscerne il motivo;

Purtroppo i pregi finiscono qui.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day:
'The film is shot almost entirely within closed quarters, where the incredibly few characters live, or die. In fact, the movie is so self-contained in its spaces you stick only to its insulated story line, not once its time or place setting, let alone the society that surrounds it, or even semblance of a larger politics. (...) The camera, (...) stepping in and out of rooms, zooming in and out of characters, calls for skilful photography, to costantly create and release tension. (...) Purely as a performer, she's [Taapsee Pannu] doubtlessly in her element in a double-role. She's possibly the most thriller-happy, female lead/star we've had in Bollywood. (...) Blurr is what should qualify as a 'why-', instead of 'who-dunnit'.'
Mayank Shekhar, 07.12.22

Film Companion:
'The execution is too self-serious to realize the complexity of its themes. The movie is too preoccupied with being scary, suspenseful, stylish or clever to empathise with - or even understand - the humans within. (...) [Taapsee] Pannu's Gayatri experiences a whole lot of trauma as a person. (...) But her performance makes it hard to invest in Gayatri beyond the immediate threat to her life. (...) Blurr is all design and no instinct. (...) The perpetually jolted expression rarely conveys a broader depth. It's also awkward writing. It's often about what's happening to her within a moment, in isolation to the rest of the story; the tone is totally different in the next scene, with some sequences entirely missing transitions and chunks of exposition. (...) There is very little emotional continuity, as though the makers are only concerned with the plot rather than the mental consequences of being stalked by a psychopath. (...) This dissonance is jarring, the jump-scares are desperate, and it only goes to show that the film lacks a sense of touch despite being a giant metaphor about sensory connections. (...) The use of darkness (...) is gimmicky. (...) The world-building feels incomplete'.
Rahul Desai, 09.12.22

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* Taapsee Pannu talks about her horror thriller Blurr, Sudeshna Banerjee, The Telegraph, 26 dicembre 2022:
'Blurr is your first film as producer. What made you turn one?
I always planned to turn producer but this film did not feature in the plan. Two months after signing the film I realised I needed a bit more than just being an actor. I wanted the film to be made in and look a certain way. As an actor, you can’t really command a lot of things. So I decided to step in as a co-producer so I could actually ask for things beyond acting - right from casting to the technical departments or how the film needs to look... I asked Vishal (Rana, the producer) who had the script, to let me come on board. Once that happened, I asked him if we could ask Ajay (Bahl) sir to direct it. I had seen his Section 375 and had messaged him saying I wanted to work with him.
This is a remake of the Spanish film Julia’s Eyes. Did you watch the original?
I had seen it in 2018 when I was doing Badla, which was based on another film (The Invisible Ghost) written by him (Oriol Paulo). I was so blown away by his writing that I watched everything he had written. So when this came my way, I did not need any description and said yes.
What kind of changes were made for the Indian adaptation?
Sometimes European thrillers are too cold for Indian audiences. At a human level there is very little takeaway. So we brought in the humanness in the film where you have a certain mental condition to take back home. It’s also a human drama in addition to being a thriller. That humanness has been added in the script. There is a kind of, I wouldn’t say social commentary, but something that will make you look at society and certain people in a different way. (...)
In the scene where they [le due gemelle] are together, the opaque lens in Gautami’s eyes helped viewers distinguish the two.
Getting those lenses, which made me actually blind, really helped me perform. I tried leaving them behind for a couple of scenes, thinking VFX would take care of it later. But it was just not working. So I chose to actually go “blind”. If you’ve seen me banging into things, that is because I genuinely can’t see there. Only the parts where I am climbing up and down stairs are where I could actually see a little through my bandages so I didn’t actually trip and injure myself. Then shooting would stop (laughs). But other than that, every sequence where you see me blind or blindfolded, I actually can’t see anything. The only thing I could sense is where the light was coming from.
How disconcerting was it to shoot like that? Gautami, who lived alone in her house, had to know her way around, right?
We had shot a few sequences of Gayatri in that house before I shot Gautami. Since Gayatri was turning blind slowly, I could take the liberty of being a new blind person who just doesn’t know how to deal with this blindness. When I turned blind for Gautami, I could not be bumping into things as it is her house. I was pretty familiar with that house by then.
Could you switch on your other sensory faculties when the camera was switched on?
In between shots and takes, it was just too cumbersome to remove those lenses and that blindfold all the time, plus it is difficult to go in and out of the blind zone. So most of the time, I kept the lenses on so I could get used to them. It was very uncomfortable at the start. You get anxious and impatient that you cannot use your eyes suddenly. But that heightened my other senses. I feel I started listening more and thinking in a more balanced way. My mental focus became sharper.
You were having to react to even wind or sound. Were those provided to you as cue?
Since I was not so used to being blind, certain things I needed a cue on. So I needed someone behind the camera to tell me that at this moment, someone passed. But for the wind, I had to react to myself because I could feel it on my body. Also there are a few sequences using things other than sound, where we wanted the audience to experience even visually. When I lose my eyes, you don’t see either on the screen. We wanted the audience to get into the world where the protagonist, through whom you are watching the film, sees what you see, but when she does not you also do not. That was an experiential-level writing.
You screened the film for a visually-challenged audience. How did that go?
I was not prepared for that kind of response. We opened it first to them. I reached there not knowing how they would respond as I am not clear how they understand a film without watching it. There is an audio description for the visually challenged. But we are so used to visualising a film that I don’t know how they process it. It was crazier than a singlescreen audience response. They were screaming, shouting, cheering... (...) The questions they put were so nuanced. They even asked me about the software on my phone that I used! I was in tears by the end of it'.

HIT THE FIRST CASE

HIT The first case è un film in lingua telugu distribuito nel 2020.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'The (...) inspector is so terse that the film he occupies (...) looks like a six-episode crime series streaming at 2.5x speed on an OTT platform. There are no pauses in HIT The first case - not between action and reaction, motion and emotion, idea and execution, question and answer, love and loss. Characters speak like they're memorising lines: robotic, brisk, unfeeling. (...) Most police procedurals take too long to come to the point. But HIT hurtles towards the end of every scene in such a tearing hurry that it overshoots the point, reaches outer space and makes the final twist of a whodunit look like a speck of campy nothingness. The style is the film's (literal) reading of pace and tension. If a narrative isn't compact enough, just remove the transitions. (...) Maybe it's designed to make the viewer feel like the cop chasing clues - costantly one step behind. (...) Once you get past this no-nonsense treatment (you must likely won't), HIT is still incredibly strange. (...) The intent is to show a man evolving during the course of the case. But very little of this actually comes through. (...) Vikram's wokeness is window dressing for a premise that collapses into its own regressive black hole. His deadpan dialogue delivery - which has more to do with the film's physical speed than the character's mental numbness - does a disservice to Rajkummar Rao, who looks like he's aching to have at least one non-scowling moment. Or at least one scene where the camera just lingers on him for more than two seconds. Rao is good enough to frame the film's constraints as Vikram's brooding persona, but there's only so much he can do before the writing outruns its own characters'.
Rahul Desai, 15.07.22

'Rajkummar Rao can make anybody look inadequate around him. It’s this inexplicable power he wields on screen that jumps out extra in roles of complexity and authority. I found this mesmeric attribute of his artistry at peak power in HIT The First Case'.

L'attore esce assolutamente a testa alta.

Freddy vorrebbe farlo insieme a Kainaaz.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'Freddy is socially awkward, stunted, creepy, needy, tone-deaf and a bit of a lunatic. And that's just the film. Its protagonist is worse. He's an... introvert. Which, in the grand tradition of mainstream cinema, implies that he's cuckoo and the world is to blame for this. Victim of circumstances. Tragic past. Mean society. Bad dates. You get the gist. (...) The movie often becomes an unintentional parody of itself. Everyone and everything is a caricature. Including the setting - a performative MTV version of Mumbai's Parsi community, whose idiosyncrasies are milked to the point of slander. (...) It's almost as if the makers dipped into a treasure chest of comic-book cliches and went with the cheapest ones'.
Rahul Desai, 02.12.22

RECENSIONI

Rediff: **
'Akshay delivers a relaxed, restrained act. Too bad there's little else to hold on to in this flimsily written thriller. (...) An absolutely absurd climax and super amateurish execution'.
Sukanya Verma, 02.09.22

Galatta:
'As the chase for the serial killer begins, Cuttputlli becomes generically watchable. No nails are going to be bitten to shreds. But at least, the crimes involving schoolgirls are gruesome enough that we want the perpetrator caught. In other words, we root for Arjan [il protagonista] and that's half the battle won. But how you wish they'd taken more care of the details'.

A THURSDAY

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'Of its many problems, the most grating one is that the makers still think this is a novel narrative. (...) Then there is this film’s simplistic button-pushing. Once Naina reveals her truth, the film leaves no stone unturned to suggest that her “method” is the best solution. Everyone suddenly looks at her differently, including the terrorized parents who feared the worst for their children. That’s not how human psychology works. The gaze is so naive that the entire country is transformed (...) by the time she’s done. (...) A Thursday is yet another lazy and rabble-rousing iteration of a complicated issue'.

SANDEEP AUR PINKY FARAAR

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'We’ve seen it a hundred times before. Urgent city woman finds herself on the run with a grumpy stranger. (...) It’s them against the world. (...) After early missteps, they start to understand each other. Their unusual partnership finds a language. In the hands of most filmmakers, this is a narrative template - chalk and cheese escape, lie, run, grow, experience and eventually love together. Romance and comedy co-exist. Drama and thrills co-inhabit. Every scene exists to inform the progression of this narrative; the surroundings and changing landscapes are ornamental. But Dibakar Banerjee is not most filmmakers. In his hands, the film itself is incidental. Every other scene chances upon a world that’s already in motion. Each moment is visually designed to remind us that no journey exists in isolation - there are people doing things, places being busy, lives being led, jobs being done. In Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, even scenes of exposition are framed as part of a larger universe. (...) It reminds the viewer that films, too, form the background of other ongoing stories and spaces - the only difference is that the camera happens to be on certain people in certain circumstances, and not on others. (...) This also explains the memorable opening sequence. (...) This interplay of perspectives triggers a cinematic language that filters through the rest of the film - and one that has long defined Dibakar Banerjee movies. (...) No other director in modern Hindi cinema implies so much - information, context, psychology - with so little. (...) As a result, the writing of Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar earns the freedom to eschew genre motifs like pace, suspense and slickness. It doesn’t move as fast as one might expect a cross-country “chase” to. It’s not as entertaining to watch either, because it resists the careful orchestration of the movies. (...) Nothing is smooth, which is why the story takes its time to marinate in the uncertainties of its people. Coming to terms with their status as fugitives is an uphill struggle, and it’s to the creators’ credit that they aren’t exactly role models. (...) The performances suit the bleak pragmatism of the narrative. (...) We know that Arjun Kapoor has limitations, but it’s usually up to the directors to envision him in a role that can weaponize these flaws. Banerjee manages to justify the incessant poker-face on most occasions, because Pinky is presented as a man who is too used to being a victim. But it’s Parineeti Chopra who stands out. (...) She is uncharacteristically restrained, especially in conveying the subtext of Sandeep. For instance, more than once, we see her brutally assaulted by a man. But her reaction - where she somehow collects herself faster than most girls might - suggests that she may have been a victim of violence before. These little things matter, and Chopra elevates a character that can’t afford to be arrogant or gimmicky just because the people she encounters are of a different social class. Kapoor and Chopra’s third collaboration (...) goes to show that perhaps actors can only be as good as their directors allow them to be. It helps that someone like Dibakar Banerjee doesn’t film humans too differently from the way he films places. If one is in motion, the other automatically appears to move. Consequently, the two combine to make Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar defy the slice-of-life-comedy sound of its title. It’s more of a road movie. But not in the strictest sense of the term. A road, after all, is a painstakingly crafted link between two destinations. Our eyes may always be on the road, but life accumulates on both sides - beyond the field of view'.

Cinema Hindi: ****
Punto di forza: regia, sceneggiatura, cast.

* Why a film like SAPF can't be shot during the pandemic!, Mid-Day, 17.03.21. Dibakar Banerjee dichiara: 'I am so happy that in the middle of COVID, I am releasing one of my films which captures the outside so much. It’s all about the outdoors, the roads of Delhi, the hills of Uttarakhand, the buses, the train stations, so you are really outside and you are with people, the texture, the locations, the mountains, the hills, the bus stations, the Gurgaon highways. (...) I am so happy that the film is releasing right now because when we see this it’s like something that we can’t show right now, something that we can’t shoot right now. It’s like glimpses of what was pre-COVID. It is such an amazing glimpse and such a nice sort of historical moment. It’s a very, very pre-COVID film. (...) No one looks pretty when your life is being choked out of you. (...) There are many in India who know how this feels. But not Parineeti and Arjun. I had to figure a way of making them angry, bewildered and scared and alien to each other which is why I had to bar them from meeting each other socially till they met for the first time on the sets in character'.

L O V E

Bravissimo Shine Tom Chacko.

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'The narrative is guised in the cloak of a thriller. Structured as an incident and its aftermath that unfurl inside an apartment, the proceedings are cleverly designed so as to mask the shortcomings posed by the pandemic. (...) Love doesn’t feel contrived, aesthetically or technically. Khalid Rahman succeeds partially in his attempt to lend an air of authenticity. Only partially because, for a movie shot with so many challenges in place, an area where it surprisingly falls short is its writing. This is despite the dark humour that adorns the narrative occasionally. (...) But these aspects ultimately serve as embellishments to a story that nosedives towards the fag end. Hurting the movie’s cause is the final act that comes across as a stroke of convenience, making the entire plot look like an extrapolated short film. Even Shine Tom Chacko (...) fail to sustain the momentum. Love has a brisk runtime of 91 minutes. For once, maybe a few more minutes would have gone a long way towards adding plausibility and helping a film realise its potential'.
Adithya Narayan, 20.02.21

Film Companion:
'In this film, Things. Are. Not. What. They. Seem. (...) Love (...) subverts the romance inherent in the word. (...) The form (not just the making, but also the writing) is as misleading as the title. Love is tricky, and therefore, Love is tricky, too. It flips around genres like mad: it’s a narcissistic murder mystery like Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope mixed with a psychological black comedy like David Fincher’s Fight Club mixed with a domestic-abuse drama like Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad. The latter is probably the easiest reference point, but it was more direct in its appeal. And in terms of form, it was more traditional. (...) The form, therefore, becomes the content. (...) The screenplay builds up to a brilliant twist that involves all the characters (superbly played by Rajisha Vijayan, Veena Nandakumar, Gokulan, Sudhi Koppa and especially Shine Tom Chacko). This twist is (...) deeply rooted in psychology. If you feel the first hour or so is “going nowhere”, it’s deliberate. When you watch the film a second time, you won’t feel that at all. (...) There’s a very “male” line, one that’s been repeated down the centuries, that says we can never understand women. But Love says that men cannot understand themselves, either. We can have contradictory impulses that almost make us feel we are a different person altogether. I wanted some more flavour in the dialogues, but I think the “drabness” may be intentional. It may be a mirror of lines that have been said (...) and arguments that have been had (...) so often - with others, with ourselves - that they’ve become as flavourless as gum that’s been chewed for too long. It may even be a mirror of scenarios we have played so often in our heads that when that event actually occurs, we don’t react at all'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* Director Khalid Rahman will not be decoding his film Love today, Film Companion, Vishal Menon, 13 marzo 2021. Nell'intervista, Rahman fra l'altro dichiara: 'It was one of the first theatrical releases post lockdown and we didn’t have the time to plan a marketing strategy. There was no market study per se. In a regular scenario, if people walk out after a movie because they didn’t understand it, they might be tempted to watch it again more patiently. But not when there’s a virus going around. Some of them watched it again on Netflix and it worked for them then. The film demands a certain mood and people understand that by the time it’s out on OTT. There would have been no Love without Covid. A couple of months into the lockdown I felt like I was going mad. Nothing was working out and I was feeling restless. So I planned to make a short film to get out of that rut. It was made in that aggression. It eventually developed into a feature but that wasn’t the initial plan. The film is set inside an apartment with actors who are all my friends. I had a story and the scene order ready but we were writing even during the shoot. So we were writing, shooting and chilling during the 25 days of Love. The whole process, from idea to first copy, took just three months. (...) Love is a film we wrote while in location. I stay in that apartment so its like I’m creating a screenplay based on the set I’m living in. Which means that I’ve tried to use every space of that 1100sq.ft apartment, either for drama or for staging'.

I S H Q

La tagline - Not a love story - è rivelatrice.

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'Ishq has quite a laudable intent at its heart - to deliver a message against the rampant moral policing in the State. But, along the way, in showing how to respond or take revenge on the perverts who become moral goons, it unintentionally celebrates another kind of evil. (...) Director Anuraj Manohar, making his debut, lets this moral policing sequence play out over a good part of the first half. He seems to be pointing at the mentality of the moral goons, who draw pleasure from the helplessness of their victims and revel in piling on their agony. But Ratheesh Ravi's script begins unravelling after the initial moments of tension, as the attempted mental torture of the couple becomes repetitive. Sachi's character also lacks consistency. (...) But it is in the second half, dedicated to an elaborate revenge ritual, that the film loses its own moral compass. (...) While Anuraj deserves appreciation for not sticking to a conventional narrative and taking some risks, the script and the revenge part are a let down. This is certainly not how moral policing needs to be fought'.

Film Companion:
'The actors are wonderful, especially Shane. (...) The real subject of the film is what happens after a man with a patriarchal mindset is kicked in the balls. (...) We only know as much about her (Vasudha) as Sachi does, which is very little. She gets no standalone scenes, no private moments. The film never takes us into her psyche the way it takes us into Sachi’s. She’s a fairly invisible presence (rather, a quivering object) during Alvin’s moral policing, and she’s completely absent in the stretch where Sachi turns the tables on Alvin’s family. And that is precisely the point of Ratheesh Ravi’s screenplay. It sees Vasudha as Sachi sees her, not as a person but as a piece of ownership. (...) Ishq works well enough when you watch it, but it really deepens when you think about it later. There are superb touches. (...) But as superb as these details are, what registers is the core. What looks, at first, like Sachi’s loss-of-innocence story soon becomes a horror story about the fact that even a boy so innocent-looking has such deep strains of patriarchy. At points, I was literally cowering in my seat - first due to Alvin, then due to Sachi. The ending, then, is perfect'.
