Salute è un poliziesco piuttosto interessante, grazie ad un soggetto robusto, ad una sceneggiatura articolata anche se disattenta, ad un'interpretazione misurata ed efficace offerta dall'attore principale, Dulquer Salmaan. La parte investigativa è coinvolgente. La narrazione, non sempre lineare, procede con cautela, mantenendo un ritmo costante. Aravind, il protagonista, è un eroe con qualche macchia e qualche paura, il prologo non ce lo fa proprio amare, ma Salute racconta il suo faticoso - tardivo - riscatto. Ajith, l'antagonista, all'inizio è credibile, e poi si trasforma nel classico eroe negativo monodimensionale privo di rimorso. I personaggi secondari si appiattiscono col procedere della storia.
Il dilemma morale è il nodo della trama e ne costituisce la spinta. Arricchisce di fascino la pellicola perché la rende sottile oltre che avvincente, e conferisce profondità ad Aravind. Salute chiede di essere considerato seriamente, orchestra una rappresentazione realistica, si sforza di mostrare tutti i punti di vista. Però la sceneggiatura commette un imperdonabile errore: [spoiler] poliziotti che adottano metodi molto discutibili pur di assicurare alla giustizia un presunto colpevole, per la stessa ragione non permetterebbero mai di lasciare in libertà un assassino. L'errore crea una sorta di corto circuito che tradisce l'intenzione e svuota alcuni personaggi di significato. Riaffiora la vecchia e trita formula buono contro cattivi. Il finale amplifica l'errore: i poliziotti verranno puniti, ma ne escono moralmente puliti (Aravind è il solo a meritarlo), e Salute vorrebbe convincerci che sia giusto così.
TRAMA
Aravind è un giovane poliziotto. Il fratello maggiore Ajith è il suo superiore. Una coppia viene uccisa. Le elezioni sono dietro l'angolo, e le pressioni politiche inducono Ajith, un riluttante Aravind e altri colleghi, a creare delle prove schiaccianti a carico del principale indiziato per chiudere il caso.

The denouement is leisurely arrived at, and the few loose ends are tied up and explained neatly. (...) Dulquer Salmaan as sub-inspector Aravind Karunakaran is a riveting watch and impresses. (...) Cops turning on each other is a familiar theme, but the presentation has one torn between wanting to condemn them and empathising with them. (...) 'Salute largely unfolds as a police procedural, showcasing the tedium of police investigations far removed from the glamour associated with them in TV shows. (...) This new police drama (...) does not adhere to the conventions of the Malayalam filmverse. It is neither loud nor flashy as commercial cop films from this industry often are. It is not preoccupied with the hero’s swag, which is particularly commendable because that hero is played by the producer. It is also not about dirty cops alone nor about a clean-as-a-whistle Robin Hood, but revolves around an individual who falls in the sizeable space in between. So far so good, and for the most part, Salute remains engaging. (...) Somewhere in the second half though, the narrative begins to stretch itself, mistaking length for ruminativeness and needless additional seconds for detail. This progressively diminishes the impact of the suspense and the new revelations at every turn. Even when it slips though, Salute is never less than interesting. (...) Punto di forza: la trama investigativa è ben costruita; l'interpretazione di Dulquer Salmaan.
Punto debole: qualche errore nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi secondari e nella sceneggiatura, il finale, un paio di inutili e posticce scene d'azione, le sbiadite vicende familiari, l'enorme coincidenza della denuncia della donna truffata. Perché non viene tracciato un identikit del misterioso, elusivo criminale?
