TRAMA

Aditya è un celebre chiromante indiano che vive a Roma. Prerana è un medico di Torino. I due intrecciano una relazione non sentimentale, ma finiscono con l'innamorarsi l'uno dell'altra. Linee della mano, patologie e (nientemeno) tsunami tenteranno di dividerli.

'He’s [il protagonista] in Rome, where people’s regular homes, like his own, bear ceilings the height of Sistine Chapel, and massive Corinthian columns, indoors. Yes, this is a period film, but set only in the late ’70s, and performed on over-elaborate sets. (...) Basically the unprecedented success of Baahubali (2015, 17) (...) has rendered it impossible for the national hero from Hyderabad to play a normal lover boy anymore. (...) What do you do in the comfort of a cinema, with your feet up, and eyes on the gigantic screen? Well, remember everything you can, and recount it to your friends, in as much detail you can. As I just did, so I don’t have to watch it again'.

The Hindu:

'A shallow story and lacklustre screenplay make (...) Radhe Shyam a colossal bore. At the end of Radhe Shyam, what stayed with me were its picture perfect frames that were painstakingly made to look like paintings. (...) But how long can one soak in the atmosphere, admiring the columns of light that pour through tall windows and the long corridors of the hospital and the homes in Italy? Sure, the film boasts of Prabhas and Pooja Hegde who have a good screen presence. But the soul of the film, the story, is flaky. What is meant to be an aching romance of two people racing against destiny turns out to be bland and listless. (...) The film wastes a bunch of talented actors, making them merely stand by and utter a line or two. (...) For the first hour or so, the aesthetic visuals, the music (...) and the lead actors who are made to look picture-perfect, accentuate the dreamy setting. Pooja Hegde looks every bit the princess and in later portions, shows a glimpse of her acting potential that is waiting to be tapped. Prabhas is effective in his portrayal, but there isn’t much in the story or characterisation that challenges him as an actor. When the conflict between destiny and love takes centrestage, the film begins to lose whatever little charm it had. The biggest issue with Radhe Shyam is that it never sucks you in. The ship sequence at the fag end of the film sinks an already shaky film'.

Cinema Hindi: **

Punto di forza: le location italiane, la fotografia e le deliziose automobili.

Punto debole: sceneggiatura elementare, dialoghi ampollosi, narrazione greve, regia inesistente, interpretazioni scialbe. Avendo a disposizione una superstar, location magnifiche, soldi a fiumi, com'è possibile sbagliare proprio tutto? Forse l'intenzione del regista, che è anche sceneggiatore, era creare un classico senza tempo. Purtroppo RS è solo vecchio e superato.

CURIOSITÀ

* La troupe di Radhe Shyam ha effettuato le riprese in Italia nell'ottobre 2018 (Arezzo, Pisa, Lucca) e nell'ottobre/novembre 2020 (Torino, altre località in Piemonte, Liguria, Valle d'Aosta). Chiara Appendino, sindaco di Torino, ha personalmente incontrato Pooja Hegde. Alcune sequenze sono state girate a Roma. All'allestimento dei set hanno contribuito le scenografe Illia Boccia e Giulia Parigi. Video dei brani Sanchari, Ee Raathale, Nagumomu Thaarale. Video Making of The Saga of Radhe Shyam. Alcune battute nel film sono in italiano: al primo incontro, Aditya grida alla volta di Prerana sei un angelo, devo morire per incontrarti (una brevissima traccia strumentale inclusa nella colonna sonora si intitola Sei un angelo); sul treno una voce fuori campo pronuncia la frase per favore dimmi; una comparsa pronuncia la frase cosa stai facendo?. GOSSIP & VELENI

* Davvero i costumisti credono che in Italia, negli anni settanta, ci si vestisse in quel modo? E perché gli scenografi non hanno sfogliato un manuale di arredamento dell'epoca? 

* Quanto a Prabhas, per la legge di compensazione universale, dopo il clamoroso successo registrato dai due Baahubali, gli sono toccati due tonfi altrettanto titanici (Saaho e RS). Speriamo ora abbia pareggiato i conti. E speriamo che i registi la smettano di considerarlo un eroe epico, e gli concedano di interpretare in modo misurato personaggi meno ieratici.
