UJDA CHAMAN

Commedia poco sottile, non bruttissima ma insipida. E ripetitiva. Ujda Chaman parte bene, poi si appiattisce a mano a mano che la narrazione procede. Chaman, il protagonista, è spento, privo di spina dorsale e poco simpatico. Apsara, la sua partner, porta una ventata di freschezza. E' l'unico personaggio scritto con un minimo di cura: meritava qualche ritocco, ma nell'insieme esce a testa alta. Il soggetto è affollato - calvizie, sovrappeso e body shaming -, e si sviluppa in una sceneggiatura deludente. La storia d'amore non è sempre credibile. 

TRAMA

Chaman è un insegnante di hindi spietatamente deriso dai suoi studenti a causa della calvizie che lo affligge. I genitori lo soffocano con suggerimenti matrimoniali, le ragazze lo ignorano. Non resta che affidarsi a Tinder.

ASSOLUTAMENTE DA NON PERDERE

* Il biblico litigio iniziale fra le due famiglie. Guddi, la madre di Chaman, è un personaggio impagabile (e implacabile), e con il marito forma una coppia davvero esplosiva.

* Le magnifiche espressioni di Saurabh Shukla.

ASSOLUTAMENTE DA DIMENTICARE

* Il comportamento degli studenti nei confronti di Chaman è esagerato. Non posso credere a tutta quell'orgia di maleducazione.

* [Spoiler] Il flirt con la studentessa. Eticamente inaccettabile, affonda la sceneggiatura nel tentativo di renderla pepata. Espediente idiota, scritto in modo agghiacciante. Difficile decretare chi dei due personaggi sia il più discutibile.

'This is a film about lost hair that eventually makes you want to tear your own off at some point. Not saying this because this is the worst shit you'll ever come across. Of course not. But it's just the way the filmmakers treat balding to be - a terribly uncommon disease, where you stand out so badly in the real world, that even a lecturer/professor in a college gets taunted by kids all day long. (...) Really? Think majority of my male teachers (in school/college) may have well been bald. Who frickin' cares? Can't even remember'.

* Il 2 gennaio 2020 Mid-Day ha pubblicato un'intervista concessa dall'affascinante Akshaye Khanna, nella quale l'attore parla della sua calvizie: "Well, because it started happening to me at such a young age, it was like a pianist losing his fingers. It almost felt like that to me, in those days. Till you really come to terms with it, and then it starts bothering you less. It's like, I suppose, waking up one morning and saying, "Oh shit, I can't read!" So it would affect you, right? Or you get up in the morning and your knees are paining, and the pain just won't go away. You take a Combiflam for pain relief, and you might realise you need a knee surgery at a very young age. And you might be a sportsperson, so it is heartbreaking. You might lose a year or two of your career. So, as I said, it is like a pianist losing his fingers. Because the way you look as an actor is very important. And especially this part (pointing to the face upwards). [Balding] at 19 or 20 is devastating. It can mentally like kill you. But, as I said, it is like anything else - someone needs glasses, someone needs something else... It's up to you, and what you are comfortable with doing [about it]. I think it did affect my self-confidence as a young actor - more than I'd like to admit, actually. Definitely".
