Una favola per adulti, semplicistica ma divertente, sorretta dagli sguardi di Ambili, l'amabile protagonista. Il soggetto è gradevole, la narrazione indebolisce gli sforzi della sceneggiatura, e il ritmo si perde in qualche ripetizione di troppo e nello stiracchiatissimo finale. La pseudo storia d'amore non convince. L'interpretazione del mattatore Soubin Shahir è brillante per buona parte del film. Con l'eccezione del piccolo Sooraj Thelakkadu (il suo Shipru è irresistibile), il resto del cast non colpisce, e i personaggi secondari sono spenti. Bobby è una muffa totale (Naveen Nazim è inespressivo, l'esatto opposto di Shahir), Teena è mal scritta. Peccato perchè valeva la pena approfondire e raccontare in modo più sottile le relazioni personali. Johnpaul George, regista e sceneggiatore, ha preferito invece concentrare la sua attenzione sul gioioso Ambili, lasciandogli campo libero.
TRAMA
Ambili è il sempliciotto del villaggio, raggirato - ma anche amato - da tutti. Scrive surreali poesie, si cimenta col cricket, è innamorato di Teena, amica d'infanzia. Il fratello della ragazza, Bobby, è un campione di ciclismo. Bobby intraprende un viaggio su due ruote dal Kerala al Kashmir. Ambili - non invitato e non gradito - decide di accompagnarlo.

'We see layers in a seemingly-simple character as the director unravels his world, inch by inch, with gentle care. The storyline is suffused in tenderness, but there are no extra toppings: no uproarious antics or tearjerker tracks. Ambili exudes warmth and compassion, but in clearly-measured volumes, making it a genuine, heart-warming watch. (...) The screenplay takes its own sweet time to set the mood before picking up a steady pace. It may seem a little slow, but the film never loses its cinematic momentum. Its transition into a road movie in the second half is swift, but the director maintains its unrushed rhythm there too, which seems intentional. (...) Soubin Shahir brings alive Ambili, a blend of naivety and grit, like a graceful symphony. He makes sure that the loneliness is not lost in the goofy body language, making it very palpable at times'.

'The hero of Ambili (Soubin Shahir), doesn’t want to be the hero of anything. His dreams and aspirations are not his own. (...) In a lesser film, Ambili would have been relegated to playing the hero’s friend, the comic relief, with his autism contributing to the laughs. (...) Despite the fact that both of them (Ambili e Bobby) are attempting the same journey, the film does a great job in juxtaposing their philosophies through the challenges that lay ahead. (...) On a deeper level, Ambili’s journey seems to have a real meaning to it. He touches lives, makes new friends and spreads joy wherever he goes. (...) A lot of what works in the film is due to Soubin’s performance. He is immensely likeable even though we’ve seen subtler variations of this performance in many films before. His character’s joy and wildness is best reflected in his body language with a spurt of fresh charm in his every step. But the same cannot be said about Naveen Nazim, who plays Bobby. A more able actor would have added several layers to the role, making him more than the joyless, lifeless brute he is. (...) It’s a film that could have worked just as well had it not taken itself so seriously. It has many wonderful moments culminating in a really moving climax, but the film doesn’t seem to be satisfied with that. It works best as prose even though it tries really hard to become poetry.
