Potrò mai disprezzare un film sui mondiali di calcio? Se poi annovera fra i personaggi un redivivo Escobar - che parla perfettamente malayalam -, la ola è d'obbligo, altro che stroncature. In questa carrellata che va dal 1994 al 2018, solo quattro nazionali vengono ricordate: Argentina, Brasile, Germania (no comment) e Portogallo. Vipinan, il protagonista, l'unico con cui Escobar interagisce, è un tifoso dell'Argentina e non della Colombia.
Argentina Fans Kaattoorkadavu è una commedia, a tratti divertente, che mescola una noiosa storia d'amore con l'irrimediabile ma comprensibilissima pazzia per il calcio delle tifoserie indiane in Kerala. Da qui tutto il corredo di zuffe, fanfare, striscioni, bandiere, lacrime, lazzi, infarti, inni, slogan e financo funzioni religiose. Insomma: febbre da mondiale. Alcune battute sono davvero esilaranti. Peccato per i buchi nella sceneggiatura grandi come campi sportivi, per la lentezza della narrazione, per il montaggio inadeguato.
Avviso ai cardiopatici: la pellicola mostra adulti poco leali in termini di fede calcistica. Lo so, è imperdonabile, ma cosa possiamo aspettarci da un Paese in cui il soporifero cricket è lo sport nazionale?

'The inter-religious love story seems as forced as the fan fights in the film. (...) The only take away for football fans, if any, is a chance to recollect some of their personal memories associated with these world cups. Otherwise, there are no edge-of-the-seat moments, expected of such films. The makers should have known that endless stock footage of fan celebrations cannot manufacture excitement on screen'.

'The film is full of predictable moments. (...) The humour track trivialises an otherwise sensitive and interesting subject. Malayalam cinema must think of new ways of handling comedy. Burdening the sidekick with the task of entertaining the audience gets too tedious. Instead, if the director could let the situation talk for humour to develop organically, we will be spared of some jarring, unoriginal moments. (...) It is refreshing to see a different kind of a heroine. Mehru is independent, well-read and has a strong political consciousness. She is at the forefront of the fan fights and does not buckle down in front of men. However, the film remains largely about the hero’s journey. The heroine is just a motif to realise it. (...) In AFK too, you can sense the Kaattoorkadavu locality through the diction, references to institutions like Koodalmanikyam Temple and the tension in the society about inter-caste marriages. Instead of tapping into these sensitive elements, the film chooses to treat them superficially to just entertain the audience with a series of “funny” one-liners, wedding songs and nostalgia-evoking scenes from the FIFA tournaments. It would have been a lovely venture if the filmmaker realised it takes more than the footage of football matches and fan frenzy to make a moving film themed on football and how it impacts ordinary lives'.

Punto debole: sceneggiatura floscia con troppi tempi morti, uso smodato del rallentatore, il personaggio di Ajay è pesantemente stereotipato (casta bassa, carnagione scura, eccetera).
