KANTARA

Difficile rispondere.

RECENSIONI

Deccan Herald: *** 1/2
'The visual style of ‘Kantara’ reminds you of the uncontrolled chaos in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s films. It’s amazing how Rishab [Shetty] (...) takes less time to establish the setting. ‘Kantara’ also attempts to expose the uncomfortable truths of the human mind. (...) Episodes that celebrate the spirit of coastal Karnataka offer an immersive experience. (...) Right from food to dialect to sacred customs to a host of quirky characters, (...) 'Kantara' is an engaging cultural tour. The efforts of B. Ajaneesh Loknath and Arvind S. Kashyap make ‘Kantara’ a technical marvel. There is a constant shift in mood in the film and Ajaneesh’s background score, at every turn of the plot, is dipped in authenticity. The use of different sounds complements the film’s folk flavour. Arvind goes beyond just celebrating the scenic landscape of the Western Ghat region. He supports the movie’s dark tonality. His camerawork is marked by an adventurous energy, especially in the racy and explosive portions. Apart from being technically rich, ‘Kantara’ is a film filled with terrific conflicts. Yet, it keeps you at an arm’s length as far as emotions are concerned. The director in Rishab succeeds in exuding unconventionality on screen but the writer in him fails to construct solid character arcs. For instance, it’s a great idea to make a woman (Sapthami Gowda in a weak performance) from the community work for the forest department, which the villagers detest. But Rishab doesn’t flesh out the character’s full potential, just like he keeps the forest officer’s balancing of personal and professional conflict at a generic level. This hampers a usually-reliable Kishore’s performance as he is forced to remain one-note. Similarly, the landlord's vested intentions are revealed without any build-up but given how brilliant Achyuth [Kumar] is, the character’s sudden switch in the trait is made invisible by his effortless transformation. Having shared the screen with gifted actors, it has taken a career-best effort from Rishab to emerge the best. His internal preparation and the hard work to perfect the external makeover for the stylised bhootha kola performance are commendable. He gets into a different zone in the jaw-dropping climax, which comes after an ambitious yet exhaustive action sequence. Rishab’s stunning act in the final 15 minutes is sure to be discussed for a long time'.

The Hindu:
'From a general glance at the Kannada movies in the last five years, it appears that the Shettys (Rishab Shetty, Rakshit Shetty and Raj B. Shetty, better known as the ‘RRR’ of Coastalwood) are changing cinema to a certain extent, in terms of content rooted in native ethos. Rishab Shetty (...) strongly believes in his theory that cinema will be more universal, if its content is regional and trust is reposed in regionalism. Kantara is a continuation of his engagement with regional content; he has once again experimented with the much-discussed issue of feudalism, environmental protection and forest land encroachment in general. In Kantara, he has turned his focus on folklore and the native cultures. (...) Set against the rural background of forest wealth smuggling, Rishab narrates a story of the belief system of generations in the coastal region and focuses on the sacred customs of the region with the powerful support of the native village nestled in the forest land. He succeeds in meticulously bringing a tale of myths, legends and superstition, and that too in his native dialect. (...) But, it is cataclysmic that in his enthusiasm to showcase, native culture, Rishab glamourises native practices. Such attempts to please the audience through a commercial framework lead to the narration losing traction and issues get diluted'.
Muralidhara Khajane, 30.09.22

Galatta:
'Rishab Shetty (...) delivers a joyous and very exuberant performance as Shiva, the protagonist of Kantara. (...) The screenplay uses many devices to tie the past and the present - or rather, to bring the past to the present and show how the two are always intertwined. (...) The most important past-present connection is a fearsome scream, which is also a metaphor for the cry of anguish of the landless. We hear this cry in the present-day Bhootha Kola performances, and we get into the meat of the plot: Who "owns" the forests? (...) Kantara follows the classic template of The Chosen One, a man who appears ordinary but is destined for greatness. At first, Shiva is as ordinary as ordinary can be. (...) And like every self-respecting masala-movie hero, he locks horns with the antagonist, (...) the forest officer Murali, nicely played with gruff authority by Kishore. (...) In short, we are either in a masala movie disguised as folklore, or in folklore disguised as a masala movie. Either way, everything has a touch of symbolism. (...) All of this is richly shot by Arvind S. Kashyap, and elevated by B. Ajaneesh Loknath's score, which is simultaneously as big as rock music and as subtle as the gently rippling notes at the film's opening. And some of the action choreography is superb. There are issues in the writing. (...) There's a taken-for-granted quality about th(e) love story. (...) The villains are easy enough to spot from a mile away, and a character's change of heart is entirely expected - meaning, the narrative could have used a lot more tension. And in such a story, I wish they'd avoided the cliches - like Shiva bursting in fury when his mother is slapped around, or the really cheap shot of a little girl being killed. But the bigger picture of Kantara is in the smaller details. It’s in the way Leela is torn between her affiliation to her job, i.e. the government, and her people, i.e. the tribals. It's in the way Nature is manifested as wild animals, as forests, as fire, as rain. When Shiva is drenched in a downpour, he says he isn't wet; he has been cleansed. It’s almost like Nature has performed a ritual on him. Despite the generic nature of the middle portions, the closing stretch complements the film’s opening beautifully. And there’s very little more potent than the rush of myth'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'“I strongly believe in the line - more regional is more universal. I think what we are doing wrong with the whole pan-Indian cinema dream is that we are trying to make bigger films. What’s the point when I try to make the kind of film that has already been made before in some other industry or in the west? Why will audiences pay money to watch such a film in theatres when they can watch it on OTT? In Kantara, I took elements from my own village and mixed it with a story about the conflict between some patch of land owned by some farmers and the forest department. It’s actually a story of humans versus nature. The differentiating aspect was the use of the mythology which is very region-specific and it worked wonders with the audience”.'
* Kantara's success nothing short of miracle: Director Rishab Shetty, Prathima Nandakumar, The Week, 6 novembre 2022:
'Your style of narration stands apart as you combine a contemporary issue with a complex native tradition like spirit worship. How did you get these layers together? (...)
I finished writing the script of Kantara in four months, along with a couple of co-writers, and we shot the entire movie in my hometown, Keradi (...) within 96 days. I strongly believe in approaching a subject with positivity. This story has nativity, our roots, beliefs, rituals and sentiments. I wanted to deal with a common subject avoiding any negativity. I wanted people to walk out of the theatres with a good feeling and energy. (...)
Your performance in the last 20 minutes of the movie, when the spirit manifests in you, has become a talking point. How did you prepare for the challenging role?
I am a trained yakshagana (traditional theatre) artiste and used to don the role for six years, when I was younger. But nothing could have prepared you for a role like this one, as it has several shades. My character, Shiva, is an easygoing, romantic village lad who has shades of grey. When I enact the role of the daiva [divinità locale] it is a spiritual experience. The kambala (buffalo race) scenes demanded an athlete, so I trained in martial arts for the film. I must have watched at least a thousand videos of bhootha kolas (animistic ritual dance) and interacted a lot with the community of daiva narthakas [danzatori rituali] during the making of the film to get it right. I also followed a strict regimen, quit eating non-vegetarian food during the shoot and walked barefoot. During the shooting of the kola, I chose to fast'.
* Rishab Shetty: ‘I believe in the practice and I have portrayed it’, Vikhar Ahmed Sayeed, Frontline, 24 novembre 2022:
'How did you come up with the story of Kantara?
Around 20 or 30 years ago, an incident took place in my village which helped me begin writing Kantara. This incident involved a fracas between a forest officer and a farmer over a piece of agricultural land. When I recalled the incident, I didn’t see these two persons as mere individuals but as representatives of humanity and nature, their clash representing this conflict. I started thinking about this and about how our entire culture in coastal Karnataka revolves around agriculture. Linked to this agriculture-based culture are the daivas (local deities), who are an intrinsic part of our lives, which I brought into my story to complete the tale of the conflict between the elements of nature and humanity. According to me, daiva aradhane (worship of local deities) bridges this conflict. Daiva aradhane brings together everyone equally in its rituals. Even to this day, when daivas are worshipped, members of a particular village, along with their families who may be scattered across the world, ensure that they gather for the rituals. There is no caste element in the Kola (the ritual dance which is part of daiva aradhane) and it even transcends religion, as there are Muslim and Christian daivas. (...)
The subtitle of the film is Ondu Danta Kathe (a legend). Is the film actually based on a legend of coastal Karnataka?
Not directly, but we have thousands of daivas in coastal Karnataka, each of whom has a story. All these stories have come to us as folk songs. There are many sagas where the daiva is challenged, or the daiva performs miracles, and these have actually been witnessed by people who have recorded these instances. How does a story become a legend? Generations of storytellers repeat the same story, giving birth to a legend. I brought together many real incidents, legends, and bits of folklore that I’ve heard over the years and set my fictional story in the world of Kantara. (...)
The climactic scene has become the most popular segment, with many viewers awed by the way in which it is conceptualised. How did you come up with this scene?
It is difficult to answer your question because it’s not easy to communicate what I experienced during the shooting of this scene. In the screenplay, there was only one line about this scene, which stated that the spirit of Guliga daiva would enter Shiva on the instruction of Panjurli daiva. When the daiva’s spirit enters a person, that person struggles to withstand the energy and loses consciousness sometimes. I had to portray this frenzied moment and I prepared for this by watching thousands of videos of Guliga daiva on YouTube. I had also seen the Kola from my childhood, and a team of daiva narthakas (ritual dancers) was with me throughout and I was discussing the portrayal with them continuously. As a devotee myself, I was clear that the portrayal should be accurate because these are sensitive matters of belief, and the visuals of the scene played out in my head. (...)
Kantara has a strong subtext of caste discrimination built into it. What inspired you to underline this aspect?
As a writer, my strength is my keen observation of society. I have seen this society [of coastal Karnataka] very closely from childhood and I’ve grown up seeing caste discrimination. I belong to an upper-caste community (...) but the ill-treatment of lower castes made an impression on me. Nowadays, caste differences are reducing as societies progress but because Kantara is set in the 1990s, I had to incorporate aspects of caste discrimination as well. It was important'.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: **
'You could just feel quite needlessly bored after a point here, that's all. Especially with some inanities for dialogues. (...) There is seriously no half-assing on VFX. Every frame is polished to bedazzle you with lights and colours. (...) In exchange for a set-piece by the second, they may have emotionally undernourished the script. (...) Ayan Mukerji (...) seems out of depth here, he's certainly operating outside his warm, intimate comfort space. (...) This is stellar stuff on the tech front. (...) This feels like a slightly hollow, hot mess, that leaves you feeling distantly cold. (...) Brahmāstra belongs to a genre that's categorically critic-proof'.
Mayank Shekhar, 11.09.22

Film Companion:
'It's hard to pinpoint precisely where Brahmāstra - Part One: Shiva goes wrong. The possibilities are endless. It could be the kitchen-sink syndrome - where a movie clubs you with so much body that it hopes you're too wonky to notice its vacant voice. Maybe you won't notice the wooden performances. Or the deafening score. Or the distinctly poor dialogue. (...) Or every other frame resembling a burnt strip of polaroid film. If a fantasy movie repeatedly yells that love is the greatest weapon in (Hindu) mythology, maybe you won't notice that it has no heart. That its romance plays out like a glitchy algorithm. (...) That the heroine calls her hero by name only 373 times in total. (...) (...) Like I said, the possibilities are endless. And maybe you're too shell-shocked to notice them all. Marvel's been doing if for years. No reason why B1S can't do it better. But it's no hard to pinpoint why this film goes wrong. It's not unusual, especially for stories steeped in scale and religious scripture. B1S is so caught up in its conceptualisation and myth-building - which, on paper, is kind of fascinating - that it forgets to behave like a film. The writing is so excited by the world it designs that the script bible doubles up as the final draft. An entire stage of filmmaking (...) seems to be missing. All the elements - the characters, the way they speak, the voiceovers, the themes, the soundscape, (...) even the visual crescendos - feel like temporary fillers for a future version that never arrives. The result is (...) a painfully inert movie. (...) Faces become surrogates for plot movement; speech is reduced to thought bubbles. Nothing else can explain the perplexing lack of chemistry between the two leads. It's almost as if Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were instructed to read the lines knowing that emotions, like everything else, would be added in post-production. It takes some doing to make actors of their calibre mess up a narrative of passion. (...) If you look really hard, you might see the germ of a full-blooded big-screen experience. Writer-director Ayan Mukerji has the framework in place, but fails at a fundamental screenplay and design level. (...) Isha exists not as a lover so much as a human Alexa; her only job is to robotically ask him questions and follow him around and make sure he's fine. (...) Her superpower seems to be that her reactions are never in sync with the magnitude of an incident. (...) It's a generic fusion of Western style and Eastern substance, (...) like a foreign interpretation of Indian legend'.

CURIOSITÀ

* Nella tradizione hindu, l'astra è un'arma dotata di poteri soprannaturali, forgiata da una specifica divinità. Brahmāstra è l'arma di Brahmā, ed è la più potente.
* Il personaggio interpretato da Shah Rukh Khan si chiama Mohan Bhargav, in omaggio a Mohan Bhargava, protagonista di Swades.
* Riferimenti al cinema indiano: Mr. India.
* Riferimenti all'Italia: Gucci, Prada.

GOSSIP & VELENI

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'This is the least likely among what we've come to expect of an 'Anurag Kashyap' film. (...) It's something that at least I'm unaware has ever been attempted in a Hindi film before. (...) How does this (...) land on the lay audience? In a way that it's instantly accessible. (...) Despite the plot (...) Dobaaraa is a pretty straight and simple film, with a trippy background score, and even a proper Hindi soundtrack'.
Mayank Shekhar, 21.08.22

Film Companion:
'Dobaaraa makes a case for mental well-being rather than just physical healing. The occupants of this film seem to be fighting the genre itself in pursuit of a humanity - and a sense of continuity - that's often denied to them by narrative gimmickry. (...) It's a fairly faithful adaptation of Mirage, so a lot of its hidden complexities and surface-level enterprise can be traced back to the DNA of the Spanish film. (...) Despite going through serious upheavals, the character of Antara feels curiously flat. Taapsee Pannu's presence is urgent, but Antara often looks to be reacting to the tricks of the narrative instead of the circumstances of a life. (...) Her quest to be believed (...) feels mechanical. As does her readymade bond with the cop. (...) This isn't exactly a suspenseful movie, which is why the film-making falters while teasing the preconceived notions of the audience. (...) Doobaara engages more than it entertains. (...) Its unwitting depth is the mark of a good genre movie - it becomes what you want it to be'.
Rahul Desai, 19.08.22

Cinema Hindi: *** 1/2.

MONICA O MY DARLING

A qualunque costo. A qualunque costo. A qualunque costo.

Puro spasso.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: *** 1/2
'Yup there’s a ‘film-buff’ film. And this is it - a movie that’s too much about movies. Meaning, you watch, parallelly, looking out for references, homages to other pix. And which also makes such flicks worth a rewatch. (...) In terms of genre, this would be what’s called ‘noir’. (...) This film is fairly self-contained - the quasi-crafted world revolves around few peeps. None of them trustable, to begin with. And, indeed, we’re dealing with a life of crime, or multiple crimes, actually. (...) There is a catty/mischievous overtone, throughout. (...) I found no Tarantino-like pornography of violence in this movie at all. The most elaborate action sequence is shot from a distance, with a glass window serving as a frame, within the frame. (...) This movie’s inherent joyousness is altogether sustained by zany characters that might seem like caricatures - with no one really ever going obviously over-the-top, at any moment. Starting with the man-eating secretary, apparently playing the whole office - that’s Huma Qureshi, totally killing it, in & as Monica! Opposite her, the smart, small-town hustler, moving up the corporate ladder - a perfect blend of confident/cool, from the exterior, but someone whose pants perennially on fire - Rajkummar Rao plays this in a way that only he can pull off with such ease. (...) You’re in the moment, as an audience - compelled to think nothing in particular. What matters most isn’t so much ‘what happens next’, as ‘wow, did not see that coming!’ And you don’t know where this film is going - absolutely the best reason to get in on the ride, right away'.

Film Companion:
'The running time of Monica O My Darling is a little over two hours, but it took me three hours to complete the new Netflix thriller. (...) I spent a majority of the film pausing and replaying moments. (...) The reasons are purely sensory. It's just... fun to watch. It has something to do with (...) the 'musicality of film'. This musicality was once inherent to the beats of a Bollywood potboiler, but it's a forgotten art in modern Hindi cinema. Several scenes in MOMD (...) reclaim the harmony of timing and tone. (...) They simply summon a feeling, a finger-snapping rhythm that's difficult to resist. The movie comes at us from this space, where narrative style doubles up as visceral substance. That's the thing about director Vasan Bala. His cinephilia (...) is a measure of how he lives - and how much he understands. (...) Through the prism of Bala's free-flowing cinephilia (...) MOMD recalibrates life as an expression of the movies we love'.

LAAL SINGH CHADDHA

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ****
'Yes, this is the same story. It is not the same film. The Indian adaptation (by Atul Kulkarni) is totally seeped in desi, earthy imagination. And the original mustn’t matter. For, who’s this film for? The India that must watch its own story, told so softly, entertainingly! And to give Laal Singh Chaddha the love he so sweetly, innocently gives back'.
Mayank Shekhar, 11.08.22

Film Companion:
'Atul Kulkarni's writing - and his sense of translation - manages to suggest that Chaddha's mere presence is political. His guileless reading of religion - rooted in his mother's sugarcoating of communal violence as "malaria" - (...) is political. (...) Even his unwillingness to be political - and his desire to just be - is political. Gump's heroism was an extension of his national identity: Be American and success will find you. But Chaddha's heroism is an indictment of his cultural identity: Be human and history will remember you. (...) Aamir Khan, the producer, deserves credit for recognising Forrest Gump as a film begging to be reformed rather than remade. And for backing Advait Chandan, (...) a director blessed with the narrative manipulation of Rajkumar Hirani and the visual flair of Anurag Basu. (...) But unlike Forrest Gump, which was relentlessly redeemed by Hanks, this film works in spite of - and not because of - Aamir Khan, the actor. (...) His performance is excessive. (...) He reacts better than he acts. (...) Kareena Kapoor Khan doesn't overcook the role. She plays Rupa as someone who - in stark contrast to Laal - is so desperate to make history that she gets consumed by it. (...) It's been a while since I've enjoyed a Hindi big-screen experience like Laal Singh Chaddha. A lot of it is down to the film's marriage of mind with heart. The thinking often morphs into a way of feeling. The writing often digs a tunnel through the political to reach the personal - and it's this fable-like dimension that finds new context'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'"The process began 14 years ago. Aamir [Khan] had produced a film called Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. After the premiere, we were sitting in his house, talking about the movies we like, and he mentioned Forrest Gump and that we both like it. The next day, I had an outdoor shoot which got cancelled. I had 12-15 days in my hand. The DVD of Forrest Gump was lying so I decide to watch it again. While watching the film, I thought what if this character was Indian, what would happen, and I started taking notes. After an hour and so, I felt that I should attempt writing the script. I started from the first scene onwards. I did not know if I would be able to complete the script, but in, the next few days I completed the script, and in the next 2-3 days I completed the second and third draft." (...) Atul [Kulkarni] shared that he always wanted Aamir to play the protagonist in the Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump. "It was completely written for him. (...) It was always Aamir whom I thought would play the character".'

* Riferimenti al cinema indiano: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Swades, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Don, Om Shanti Om, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Main Hoon Na, Sushmita Sen.
* Riferimenti all'Italia: credo di aver intravisto Sonia Gandhi nel filmato di repertorio sulla morte di Indira.
* Film che trattano lo stesso tema: My name is Khan.
* Per molte ragioni (fra cui un numero minore di titoli in due anni causa coronavirus), non è un buon periodo per il regale triumvirato dei Khan. In dettaglio, considerando la classifica delle prime dieci posizioni del botteghino solo indiano dal 2014 ad oggi (ammesso che i dati condivisi da Wikipedia siano attendibili):
- Aamir, il meno prolifico: bene PK (2014, ad oggi settimo) e Dangal (2016, quarto); male Thugs of Hindostan (2018) e LSC (2022) che non entrano nemmeno nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima;
- Salman, il più prolifico: bene Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015, ottavo); entrano nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima Kick (2014), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Race 3 (2018) e Bharat (2019); male Tubelight (2016), Dabangg 3 (2019) e Radhe (2021);
- Shah Rukh: nessun titolo nelle prime dieci posizioni; entrano nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima Happy New Year (2014) e Raees (2017); male Dilwale (2015), Fan (2016), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) e Zero (2018 - ad oggi il suo ultimo film).
Includendo gli incassi internazionali, rientrano Dilwale e Thugs of Hindostan:
1 Dangal 2016
6 Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2015
7 PK 2014
9 Sultan 2016
14 Tiger Zinda Hai 2017
20 Prem Ratan Dhan Payo 2015
24 Kick 2014
27 Happy New Year 2014
30 Dilwale 2015
37 Thugs of Hindostan 2018
39 Bharat 2019
45 Raees 2017
46 Race 3 2018.
2017 Tiger Zinda Hai, Raees e Tubelight
2018 Thugs of Hindostan e Race 3
2019 Bharat e Dabangg 3
2021 Radhe.

PONNIYIN SELVAN - I

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'The source material is rich with myriad characters that undergo a rollercoaster of emotions, and Mani Ratnam gleefully picks them all up to give it a cinematic touch. It helps that he has a power-packed starcast. Karthi almost steals the show, especially in the first half, kindling a feeling of joie de vivre, thanks to his zesty acting style. (...) Vikram packs a powerful performance; watch him bawl during a sequence in which he sadly reminisces about a skeleton from his past. Jayam Ravi has an easygoing, understated approach to his character, while still maintaining the dignity associated with royalty. And (...) Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha get their Tamil accents right... but the face-off scene between them needed more tension. Aishwarya Rai looks a million bucks, and also shines in the few scenes that showcase glimpses of her character’s villainy, but there’s a lot more to be fleshed out. We’ll wait for the next instalment. The issue with an epic of this kind is that all characters, except the leads, get little prominence. (...) Another issue is the presence of a dozen important characters, (...) which will prove to be a challenge to follow for the average viewer. But what the audiences will follow - and probably marvel at - is the film's ability to take you into a world from many centuries ago. Be it the rich sequences inside the kingdom or the magnificent battle set pieces, Ponniyin Selvan - I has you invested in the big screen, though one feels that the ocean segment in the second half could have been staged better. Thota Tharani's production design is a highlight, as is Ravi Varman's camera that almost runs alongside the characters; the quick-motion shots from atop a horse are as classy as those basked in beautiful sunlight. A.R. Rahman's music (...) is experimental, and amps up the war sequences, while the songs are placed in a way that aids the story narrative. (...) Ponniyin Selvan - I is 167 minutes of powerful storytelling backed by visual splendour'.
Srinivasa Ramanujam, 30.09.22

Galatta:
'The film transforms a book into an utterly gorgeous piece of cinema, and I’m not just talking about Ravi Varman’s image after stunning image. (...) It’s also the writing, by Mani Ratnam, Elango Kumaravel and Jeyamohan. (...) The book has been slashed, and pages and images flutter across from one bit of exposition to another. (...) Every character has a strong scene - or three - where their essence is established. One part of me wished for a ten-hour movie. But given two hours and forty-five minutes, there really is no other way to tell this story on screen, and the big plus is seeing Mani Ratnam, the director, in glorious form with his fantastic technical team: Thota Tharani handles the production design, Sreekar Prasad is the editor, and cinematographer Ravi Varman fills the screen with colour, from the blue of the seas to the browns of the land. (...) This is a film filled with constant movement: it's either the chases or the battles or the never-ending mind games that keep coiling around the narrative like a slimy snake. Even the camera, mostly, is free and keeps moving. Very few shots seem "composed". (...) I would have liked the songs to have been replaced by more interaction between the characters. Or maybe more time for the action scenes to play out. (Right now, they seem like truncated versions of longer action blocks). (...) Instead of trying to dazzle us with epic-ness, Mani Ratnam goes all-out real. There are no "mass" dialogues, the jokes are casually tossed off, the verbal confrontations are delivered in even tones, and even the fights aren't staged as spectacles for the sake of spectacle. (...) All the actors are fantastic, especially Vikram, Aishwarya, Trisha and Karthi. (...) This character-driven first part perfectly sets the stage for the second installment, which can now hit the ground running. Apart from showing how a huge novel can be convincingly condensed, that is this film's biggest achievement'.
Baradwaj Rangan

Mid-Day: * 1/2
'This film traverses breathlessly, at breakneck speed, between way too many scenes, and set-pieces - from horses in battle, armada on high seas, to swashbuckling sword-fights - without a second for any kinda staging of emotions, whatsoever. The audience isn’t supposed to simply soak in the stuff on screen. So much so that you begin to believe after a point, that maybe a lot of footage has been lost, and the movie has been stitched together, with only the high-points left over. Either that. Or the filmmakers are totally unable to contain the enthusiasm for the material at hand. They devote themselves entirely, therefore, to simply cover page after page of the original text. Remaining, in turn, far too faithful to the book this film is adapted from. (...) What do you really make of the first part of Ponniyin Selvan - I? (...) Very little, beyond the fact that soon as you settle into a character/scene/scenario, the movie simply moves on. (...) Ratnam is at his best. (...) Same with his partnering composer, A.R. Rahman. (...) And yet, it hardly takes a keen eye to observe/laud the effort put into this visually captivating canvas - in terms of locations, lighting, VFX, production design; scale, basically. (...) You do a double-take sometimes and look up, alright - especially the combat sequences, with (Ravi Varman’s) camera pacing through crowds, with actors in sharp close up, faces covering the giant full-screen. The only time the camera does calm down for a bit is to admire the beauty of actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. (...) Only there’s hardly much (...) to glue you to what happens next. Maybe the story is just not leaping off the pages, as it should?'

Regia, fotografia, colonna sonora, coreografie, azione.
Punto debole: eventi sottintesi, personaggi numerosi.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* I wanted to break 'the Mani Ratnam style' in Ponniyin Selvan, dichiarazioni rilasciate da Ratnam raccolte da Navein Darshan e pubblicate da Cinema Express il 20 settembre 2022:
'"Fitting Ponniyin Selvan into a single film was the biggest challenge I had when thinking of adapting. Today, the audience has embraced the idea of duologies and trilogies, and this seemed like the perfect time for me to explore the format. If I had made the material as a single film, I would have been critical of myself for leaving out so many details. (...) Being unpredictable is my top priority. So, I try to avoid a distinct signature or style in my films. When someone starts finding a pattern in my work, I don't see it as a compliment; instead, I push myself harder to overwrite it. (...) Each film dictates itself. I just have to ensure that none of my previous influences is infused into my current work." (...) He adds that using multiple-narrative techniques was essential in adapting Ponniyin Selvan into a cinema. "While a novel can have an entire page to explain the wave of emotions a character is going through, a film can only utilise body language and dialogues. So, we had to explain certain things directly, certain things indirectly and the rest in an intricate manner to ensure a gratifying viewing experience." (...) "As a significant portion of the novel is based on real history, our research team worked hard in getting the representation of the characters and locations right. For instance, the warriors in the film wear thick leather armour, instead of those made of metal. Also, we have humanised the characters as much as possible." (...) The auteur states that he lets his actors find their path. "I just plant the idea in them and guide them when they lose track. I believe in my actors a lot. Once I finish casting, I trust actors to transform themselves and bring their characters to life." But this doesn't mean he went easy on them. The taskmaster made sure that his actors underwent multiple workshops and script-reading sessions'.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'Films such as these rely on expensive, extensive, exquisite world-building alone. (...) The level of action sequences is doubtlessly outstanding'.
Mayank Shekhar, 23.07.22

Film Companion:
'The cultural context is irrelevant here. (...) Visual effects aside, Shamshera is a hollow remnant of a bygone era of storytelling. (...) The screenplay makes the mistake of reducing a mythical larger-than-life character to an oddly bureaucratic battle for freedom. (...) As rugged father Shamshera and roguish son Balli, Ranbir Kapoor's return to the big screen is visibly an effort to be more 'massy' and accessible. He moves and grooves fine, but the masala-movie pitch doesn't come naturally to him'.
Rahul Desai, 22.07.22

Cast:

* Ranbir Kapoor - Balli/Shamshera
* Sanjay Dutt - Shuddh Singh, daroga (ufficiale di polizia nell'impero Moghul e nel Raj britannico)
* Vaani Kapoor - Sona, danzatrice e moglie di Balli
* Saurabh Shukla - Doodh Singh, compagno di Shamshera e di Balli
* Ronit Roy - Pir Baba, compagno di Shamshera e di Balli
* Craig McGinlay - colonnello Freddy

Regia: Karan Malhotra
Sceneggiatura: Ekta Pathak Malhotra, Karan Malhotra
Colonna sonora: Mithoon.
Coreografia: Brinda, Chinni Prakash, Shakti Mohan
Fotografia: Anay Goswamy
Montaggio: Shivkumar V. Panicker
Azione:  Franz Spilhaus, Parvez Shaikh
Anno: 2022

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'"It was very hard for me (to do this film). Karan [Malhotra] held my hand. One thing I lack as an actor is angst. I am not an angry person. I am a fun-loving, happy and detached guy. Karan struggled with angst and we sat together a lot. He was like, 'how do I extract the emotion of anger from you for the character'. He started going deeper in my personal life, into my past, because he wanted to tap into that side of me". (...) "I got a great partner in Karan. It was a very hard role and there were many days when I was, 'I can't do this.' Apart from the physical stress, the mental stress of playing this part, of this high octane world, the emotions were up there". (...) "After 15 years in the industry as an actor, you have to keep challenging yourself and pushing the boundaries. No director ever really saw me in films like this. I'm really grateful that Karan Malhotra offered me a role like this because I was not getting such offers. They usually saw me as a coming of age or a romantic guy. So I jumped onto this offer because I knew this film has the potential to speak to a larger audience, to speak to an audience who love going to the cinemas for the movie experience".'

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: *** 1/2
'This film is what you’d call the quintessential ‘family entertainer’. (...) And yet the theme is totally adult. In the sense that it deals with divorce and infidelity, old-age infatuation, and young-love destroyed. The treatment may well be that of a sex comedy. And yet at no point does the picture feel cheap-assed, salacious. (...) Really, what’s there not to love in a film going back to basics, or ‘Bollywood’, as it were. (...) It’s really the interplay between the four lead characters that makes it work. The warm, genteel Neetu Kapoor provides it the dramatic centre. Looking at her ace scenes with long passages, it’s a loss to humanity that we’re seeing her in a film after almost a decade, and that we lost her from the screen at her prime in the early ’80s. The one more obviously overpowering this show, no points for guessing, is Anil Kapoor, 65, indisputably India’s youngest sexagenarian. (...) This is also such a fantastic plot-driven script (Rishhabh Sharrma), that it’s hard to accurately tell the motivations of characters, in terms of why they do, what they do - Anil’s is the hardest to get. Should it have remained a cranked up, sex-com alone, and this dad would make more sense then? Maybe. Does the film seem too verbose at the same time, explaining itself on occasion? Surely. Can you tell the twists beforehand, though? I couldn’t. Does the gag-fest work, pretty much all through then? Hell, yeah'.
Mayank Shekhar, 25.06.22

Film Companion:
'Jugjugg Jeeyo is a fascinating film. It speaks like a child but thinks like an adult. It's jarringly loud, long, crude and decadent. (...) Almost every scene is a composition of these two disparate tones: high-pitched humour and high-pitched melodrama. Characters are either funny or serious. There is no middle ground. But for once, this dated language doesn't feel random - it becomes a narrative smokescreen to renovate the vintage Bollywood junction of family and romance. The themes are old, but the resolutions are new. (...) The first half is mostly fun and games. (...) The second half features intense confrontations, fewer gags and surprisingly mature writing; gender and generational conflicts come to the fore. The flawed-parent trope is not a familiar one in mainstream Hindi cinema, less so when the tone resists the moral segregation of heroes and villains. Beneath the crass layers of volume, the writing is perceptive. (...) The women in the film refuse to be clever or playful to be accepted as characters, (...) stay comfortable in their own skin, unlike their attention-seeking partners, who are busy deflecting drama with humour so that nobody notices their inadequacies. I think the casting of JJ doubles up as its own screenplay. No antique star has aged as elegantly - and sportingly - as Anil Kapoor. (...) When Kapoor makes us laugh in every other scene, it's a reminder of how movies have culturally conditioned us to mistake male entitlement for charm, aura and levity. (...) Anil Kapoor's inherent charisma turns Bheem into a man who's so difficult to dislike that we feel culpable for liking him. Unlike most movie patriarchs, he doesn't get a full-fledged redemption arc'.
Rahul Desai, 24.06.22
