EK VILLAIN RETURNS

Le mie aspettative erano bassissime, e forse per questo non ho trovato Ek Villain Returns così agghiacciante. Intendiamoci: i difetti spuntano come gramigna in ogni sequenza. EVR è una sorta di ibrido contro natura fra un film pruriginoso per adolescenti e un thriller misogino e semisplatter. Mix non riuscito perché il primo aspetto imbriglia il secondo impedendogli di compiersi. Inoltre il regista è troppo impegnato ad inseguire un'atmosfera invece di raccontare una storia. 

Però la trama, con una sceneggiatura più professionale (ed estrema), poteva intrigare. Qualche elemento di novità c'è: eroina ipercattiva, relazione estremamente malsana, necrofilia. Mohit Suri ripropone le sue fascinazioni dark, ma difetta in audacia: butta lì un cenno e poi si tira indietro. 

I personaggi sono tutti, a vario titolo, negativi, costruiti in modo singhiozzante e impreciso. Con un lavoro accurato, si poteva estrarre qualcosa di interessante. Due di loro beneficiano di una blanda formazione, che però è quasi stonata, e che ottiene il solo risultato di illuminare in misura maggiore il villain del titolo e la sua compagna. Le interpretazioni non sono eccelse ma nemmeno da buttare, gli attori hanno spremuto dal copione tutto lo spremibile. Disha Patani mi ha stupita: ha accettato un ruolo scandaloso e difficile nel quale poche colleghe si sarebbero cimentate, e in alcune scene è persino convincente.

TRAMA

Aarvi è una giovane promessa della scena musicale. Nel corso di una festa nel suo appartamento, Aarvi viene rapita da un uomo mascherato. La polizia ritiene di aver individuato il colpevole in Gautam, il suo ricchissimo e viziatissimo ex fidanzato. Ma qualcosa non torna.

'The female leads in the film (Disha Patani included), in various stages of undress, generally have the best lines. (...) Two solid action sequences; one set in the Mumbai metro, the other inside a car. Some of the locations, while decidedly local, are outstanding. To be fair to the director (Mohit Suri), (...) he’s blessed with fine music-video aesthetics. And what better reason to listen to songs, shot on massive budgets, than a Bollywood movie, right?'.

'Director Milap Zaveri doesn’t bother with mundane filmmaking elements like transitions, cuts, continuity and beats. In fact, there is no such thing as a scene - the background score changes while the camera simply pans to another set of actions starting in the corner of the same frame. At one point, I could swear I saw the sun shining in half the frame and rain pouring in the other half. At times I believe Zaveri operates on a level so evolved that none of us are in a position to understand the purpose of his films’ anti-brilliance. Like those high-frequency dog whistles. (...) Marjaavaan cannot be serious. It cannot be possible that I was sitting in a preview show with sane-minded human beings who didn’t want to do something less painful with their life for 137 minutes. At best, it has the IQ of a blind pigeon. At worst, it makes Satyamev Jayate - Zaveri’s previous film - look like Schindler’s List in which Oskar Schindler thinks he is a German Academy Award. And that’s possibly the only compliment I can afford to a Milap Zaveri movie. He may have a point when he says that critics aren’t the audience he makes films for. But he would also have a point if he said that sharks or crocodiles aren’t his target audience either. In his films, for instance, nature is incidental: sand exists so that strong men can leave indentations in it with their footsteps, rain exists so that it can drench the bodies of item girls and grieving lovers, walls exist so that they can crack when heroes get angry, air exists so that bullets have a medium to fly through, sound exists so that it can fill the void between inane one-liners, and women exist so that they can either be mute, dead, sex workers or dancers (or sometimes all at once). (...) My point about Zaveri’s movies - written or directed. I long for the day he realizes that his dead-serious action melodramas are funnier than his crass comedies. The lack of self-awareness in these films is so baffling that it’s sad - everything is a defiant “mass” tool meant to spite the elite and trigger the worst primal instincts of Indian men. Everything is a reaction. But to call him a provocateur would be to acknowledge that these films are legitimate - even if terrible - works of art. For me, they don’t even qualify. This isn’t his voice; this isn’t a voice at all. This is an algorithm in search of the highest bidder. And hence, the final result is the same. Marjaavaan is just another brick in the unbreakable box-office wall. And a tragic reminder that we, as a nation, are the movies we watch'.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2

Non rientro nella fascia d'età a cui questo film si propone. E non sono in grado di rispondere alla domanda: a 12 anni, se avessi visto Student of the Year 2, mi sarebbe piaciuto? Boh. Procedo con cautela. La produzione ha speso troppo per una pellicola dalla storia modesta. Lo spreco si nota e stona, anzi, infastidisce. La sceneggiatura è un susseguirsi di cliché tipici del genere. Idem i dialoghi. I personaggi sono stereotipati e innaturali. Del quartetto di attori, la debuttante Tara Sutaria mi è sembrata un filo più espressiva rispetto ai colleghi. Tiger Shroff è un ballerino talmente sciolto e dotato che potrebbe danzare dall'inizio alla fine di ogni suo film e il mio giudizio sarebbe sempre 5/5. In SOTY2 si cimenta però anche in altre attività.

Nel primo tempo ho colto l'unico spunto interessante poi purtroppo abortito. Rohan, il protagonista, riesce ad iscriversi allo stesso college frequentato da Mia, la ragazza di cui è innamorato. Mia lo accoglie con la battuta (vado a memoria): 'Mi sto evolvendo. Faccio cose nuove. Ti avrei rispettato di più se tu fossi venuto qui per te stesso'. Segue il vuoto. Shreya è l'unico personaggio ad azzardare una maturazione e ad avere ben chiaro in mente un obiettivo da perseguire. Gli altri si limitano al cazzeggio.

TRAMA

Studenti in un college, anzi due. Ballano, corrono, si dannano col kabaddi. Tutti probabilmente analfabeti, dal momento che non aprono mai un libro.

The film lacks drama, conflict and narrative tension, with dialogues written for mannequins'.
