AMAR SINGH CHAMKILA

Imtiaz Ali è come rinato.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: *** ½
'This is a smartly edited film. (...) It’s hard to figure, though, how many more minutes should’ve been hacked, further, to arrive at a much tighter narrative still. That said, there’s something instantly meditative about the moments. (...) It’s also the naturally sweet, innocent [Diljit] Dosanjh, so seamlessly transferring his soul to an imagined star, Chamkila, a fellow-singer, he probably himself grew up idolising. Feels as authentic as it gets. (...) The subject matching the star. A.R. Rahman delivering music, that’s totally as per the script’s milieu/brief. Rather than a generic, multi-genre soundtrack. (...) And of course, [Imtiaz] Ali, co-writer (along with brother Sajid), and director - fully in control of the material - who’s similarly delved into vital questions of art vs artiste, fame and its pitfalls, within the phenomenal musical, Rockstar, (...) inspired by the Punjabi legend, Heer Ranjha. (...) Through the folk singer, Chamkila, known/derided for his vulgar lyrics - such a common motif of folk music, after all - Ali gathers a courageous voice to question, who defines obscenity, anyway? Apart from religious fanaticism and violence, the caste angle - although only briefly touched upon - lends Chamkila’s story an added layer. Dhani Ram, aka Amar Singh, aka Chamkila, belonged to the low/chamar caste. Something that must’ve permanently defined his position in a pind. Intense popularity, from sheer talent, helped him transcend his circumstances. The world is what it is. He learnt to be. And then they didn’t let him be. Honestly, I don’t know what to make of (...) Chamkila - whether to see him as (...) kinda iconoclast, or simply a chart-busting Bhojpuri, Lollyop singer, providing visceral joy to a willing public. I’m glad the film doesn’t influence you either way'.

Film Companion:
'Most Indian biopics are shackled by their relationship with history. Reverence becomes the default lens; stories are chosen to educate, not excavate. There is no room for opinion, and film-making is reduced to a medium of adulatory bullet points. In that sense, Amar Singh Chamkila is a rare cocktail of legend and legacy. The life of the slain Punjabi musician (...) is defined by the very language of opinion. (...) So it's fitting that the biopic about him is inventive, freewheeling and curious - constantly mining the connective tissue between not just art and artist, but also between the worlds that make and break them. (...) To its credit, the film sings in the past but speaks to the present. Chamkila's career (...) manages to offend all fractions of society. It reveals the hypocrisy of a people who thrive on private escapism and public virtue. Unlike the rest, he (...) creates from what he's seen (...) rather than what he aspires to see. His work remains a function of observation, not romanticisation. (...) The conflict is familiar: The politics of art is censored by the religions of intolerance. (...) That is the essence of ASC. It reclaims the words from the headline. And it grieves the death of not a person, but a place and time; it laments for a world that watched and wondered. The film isn't a whodunit. It is a ghost story - and it haunts a culture that continues to shoot the messenger'.

SCHEDA DEL FILM

Cast:

* Diljit Dosanjh - Amar Singh detto Chamkila, cantautore

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'It is important to understand the meaning of vulgarity and what experimentation with vulgarity has meant for Dalit-Bahujan communities. Vulgarity stood as an antithesis to the sanitised modern spaces that the music industry was generating towards the 1980s [canzoni sacre/devozionali che ebbero grande successo negli anni ottanta e novanta]. (...) For Amar Singh Chamkila to choose vulgarity over the moral/devotional was also a creation of a counternarrative of vulgar music against the sanitised, middle-class devotional music. For the Dalit-Bahujan community, experimenting with the ‘vulgar’ hasn’t been a new phenomenon. (...) Therefore, choosing to sing a song deemed vulgar is a reclamation of the humiliation that the Dalit-Bahujan community has been historically subjected to. (...) If Imtiaz Ali was genuinely interested in portraying the real Amar Singh Chamkila, he would have appreciated the singer’s choice to sing vulgar songs rather than depicting him as confused about whether to sing them or not. Chamkila consciously chose vulgarity. He claimed to emerge from his everyday lived experience as a Dalit by singing about his life and publicly speaking about the Dalit-Bahujan lifeworld. Chamkila’s music is also anti-caste because it defies the existing dominant upper-caste devotional music industry and instead creates an alternative space that resonates with the masses. (...) The tycoons of the Punjabi music industry remain predominantly from dominant caste communities, who are well-networked with the mainstream music industry. (...) The emergence of an anti-caste music industry is relatively new and closely tied to the rise of the anti-caste socio-political movement in the region. While many songs by these artists are assertive at their outset, it is interesting to examine figures like Chamkila, who defied caste barriers in music and experimented with the ‘vulgar’. The question of caste assertion in Chamkila’s music manifests subtly through defiance and disobedience. (...) The critical question one needs to ponder is: What made Chamkila’s death inevitable? From marrying a woman from a dominant caste (Amarjot Kaur) to seeking popularity in the music industry despite coming from the Dalit community, these were some of the caste contractions that Chamkila was prey to. The non-acceptance of a ‘low’ caste by the dominant caste manifests itself at multiple socio-cultural-political levels, not just in terms of economic relationship. Despite Chamkila’s popularity and economic accolades, the stickiness of caste never escaped him, and his death became the only ultimate pacification'.

M A J O R

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'Not perfect, but effective enough to leave viewers moved. (...) And thankfully, there are no jingoistic overtones. (...) Certain portions feel airbrushed. (...) But these are minor misgivings in the larger picture. As a plot device, narrating Sandeep’s story through his parents (...) helps to give the emotional gravitas. There’s a delicate, sensitive manner in which the relationship between Sandeep and Isha (....) is portrayed. (...) Dialogues convey a lot without melodrama. (...) One can either mull over how much cinematic liberty and dramatisation was required to make this tribute or soak in the narrative that touches the right emotional chords. What makes this tribute work is also the performances all around. Adivi Sesh is effective. (...) This is an internalised performance and his career best. (...) A word of praise for Prakash Raj and Revathi. (...) Major lives up to its promise of paying a befitting tribute to Sandeep Unnikrishnan'.
Sangeetha Devi Dundoo, 03.06.22

Mid-Day: ***
'Major ends up humanising 26/11, more than most other works on the subject. Because, primarily, it is focused on the front-man. With a hero to singularly follow. (...) Early portions of the pic do seem a li’l amateurishly haphazard, on occasion; including continuity errors, if you will. What eventually matters is how it comes together, by the end of it. (...) And yet the exhilarating stunts, mortal combat sequences, and pyrotechnics, appear as authentic as they get. Director Sashi Kiran Tikka knows a thing or two about withholding and revealing surprises for an action thriller. There is a fairly full-frontal approach to the formula elements as well. Just a set of some relatively unlikely faces for a Hindi film, from a town separate from Bombay alone, lends all of this a touch of fresh love that, for me, is hard to explain. (...) It recreates 26/11 with just enough creative liberties to remain believable still. It moves you, with a fine measure of empathy and patriotism. Sure, we’ve seen, read, heard enough about 26/11. This is only a solid addition to the list. Glad I caught it, for sure'.

Sceneggiatura e regia accettabili. Buone interpretazioni.
Punto debole: retorica nazionalista, protagonista troppo perfetto.

* ‘Major’ is Adivi Sesh’s long-brewing tribute to Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Sangeetha Devi Dundoo, The Hindu, 23 maggio 2022:
'The connect
Sesh was living in San Francisco during the 26/11 attacks. Like everyone else, he learnt about Sandeep through the news. The loss felt personal, he remembers. “Sandeep looked like an older brother, perhaps because of the resemblance. He looked like some of my cousins.” Driven by curiosity, Sesh read up on Sandeep. “The more I read about this man who saved hundreds of people, I became a fan. I began saving newspaper clippings, links to articles and Quora forums where his friends had shared information. I thought I knew a lot about Sandeep. When I met his parents, I realised there was so much more.” Sesh refers to Sandeep’s parents (...) as “uncle and amma”. “Amma has so many photographs of Sandeep clicked in his childhood. She was like a social media mother before we had social media.”
Schwarzenegger and soccer fan
Sesh discovered that Sandeep was a “polar opposite of the stereotypical image one might have of a military officer.” “He was fun loving, a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger and action films, a soccer fan who would argue with his superiors on which club should win while listening to the commentary on the radio,” says Sesh. (...) The writing process was different from the fictions Sesh had written earlier. “In a fact-driven biopic, one normally tries to add pizzazz to make the story cinematic. Sandeep’s story had so much drama that it was tough to include everything.” He mentions how Sandeep once carried a wounded soldier on his shoulders for six miles in Kashmir. “Contextually, we could not include it in the story; there are many more such incidents we had to leave out.” In the 136-minute film, there were times the script had to fit in things that happened over five years in Sandeep’s life in one scene. (...)
Understanding Sandeep (...)
Sesh weighed 84 kilograms before Major. He had to get leaner and fitter. “The biopic shows Sandeep in different ages and my weight had to go from 84 to 76, down to 73 and 71, and up again. It was impossible to film in chronological order. The only upside of the lockdowns is that I could change between the weights and muscle tones in a healthy condition.” (...) There were times when he was stuck, trying to understand Sandeep’s mindset. “I once called amma and asked her what it meant for Sandeep to be a soldier. She recalled several incidents that explained the philosophy by which he lived. His decision to be a soldier coloured every relationship he was a part of.” The film, Sesh explains, begins by showing Sandeep as a boy next door, enjoying the little things in life, his school crush, before tracing the transformation as a soldier: “Men and women aren’t born great; they do things that make them great.”
Deliver under pressure
As an actor, Sesh evolved: “I hate watching myself on screen, I can only see the flaws. This time, I am proud of some of the scenes. A telephonic conversation with Isha (...) in the second half required me to convey so much by speaking less. It was a rare instance when I thought I got every beat right”.'

* Adivi Sesh è attore, sceneggiatore e regista. Ha recitato in Baahubali.
Nato in Kerala, cresciuto a Bangalore (Karnataka). Come rivelato dai colleghi, le sue ultime parole furono "Don't come up, I will handle them".
(Fonte Wikipedia).

SM stenta a creare coinvolgimento emotivo.

RECENSIONI

Film Companion:
'For a film about a remarkable woman who democratized the most popular male-dominated field in the country, Shabaash Mithu has regrettably little to say - except that she's a woman. (...) The Mithali Raj in this movie isn't a person so much as a concept. Her journey is a vessel for a very facile, binary reading of womanhood and gender disparity. (...) The film-making, too, lacks empathy - it refuses to engage with the stillness of self-doubt. Like most Indian hagiographies posing as biopics, it interprets progress as narrative motion. (...) Amit Trivedi's soundtrack is painfully generic. (...) The craft often goes out of its way to look pretentious. (...) Many scenes are strangely conceived. (...) SM has absolutely no sense of time. (...) It looks like there's no more than two years between Mithali Raj's debut as a teenager in 1999 and her comeback to lead the team to the 2017 Women's World Cup final. (...) Changing skin tones are the only cosmetic indication of time passing. (...) Taapsee Pannu's performance, too, suffers from this narrative jetlag. (...) It never looks like Mithali Raj has lived a lot between her innings'.

Firstpost: **
'Mithali [Raj] is a global cricketing icon with accomplishments that could send your head spinning, but director Srijit Mukherji’s biopic fails to note or convey the full blast of her achievements. (...) The film acknowledges Mithali’s role in raising the profile of women’s cricket in India but gives us little idea of the grit that must have helped her along. Shabaash Mithu is also unable to capture the fire on the field that made Mithali Raj the heavyweight that she is. (...) The chemistry and warmth between the two little kids, the sense of humour, innocence and intelligence written into their interactions, (...) make Shabaash Mithu’s opening half hour or so an enjoyable ride. (...) Shabaash Mithu thereafter has an episodic feel and pretensions to a grandeur that it does not possess. The writing becomes progressively weaker and the direction increasingly limp. (...) It does not portray caste accurately, referring to the economic hardships some of the women face and not the discrimination intrinsic to the caste system. (...) Shabaash Mithu does not capture the complexity of circumstances that led to increasing visibility for women’s cricket in India in the run-up to the 2017 Cup: Mithali Raj’s charisma, the live telecast of matches, the advent of the social media that mainstreamed discussions on the neglect of women’s cricket, and so much more. Through all this, Taapsee [Pannu], who has been so much better so often in the past, looks inexplicably distant and wan as Mithu. With such flaccid direction and writing coming her way, who can blame her?'.

ROCKETRY - THE NAMBI EFFECT

RECENSIONI

The Hindu:
'Madhavan deserves praise for picking a subject that not many people might be aware of, and more importantly, not diluting it by adding ‘filmi’ elements. But honest intention alone does not make a great film. Biopics are relatively easier than fictional topics to crack, and it's to Madhavan's advantage - this is his directorial debut - that he has rich material in front of him. Choosing the main events in Nambi's dramatic life was key, and Madhavan has picked the best. But translated into a film, it still feels like a missile gone astray. The first half feels like an extended science class, with multiple jargons thrown in that not many people might relate to. In these portions, the film has very little flavour, and rather comes across as scenes documenting Nambi's victories in the scientific world. There are umpteen scenes here that are the cinematic equivalent of saying 'Nambi is a genius' and nothing more. Adding to the woes is the fact that the subject needed many foreign actors (...), most of whom are rather weak in performance and dialogue delivery. (...) It is in the second half that Rocketry feels more like a film, like a missile suddenly galvanised into action. The dialogues get sharper. Making up for the average directorial skills of Madhavan is actor Madhavan, who springs to life in the portions capturing Nambi's older days. The actor aces some of these sequences, especially the ones that follow his custodial torture. (...) The film is also about choices, and one really wishes that it explored that in more detail. (...) The story of Rocketry is, without doubt, something that audiences have to be told. But, behind that thought is a film that connects only in parts and is, at many times, awkward. (...) Maybe Rocketry is that strange film that keeps sifting between fact and emotion, without making a distinguishable mark'.
Srinivasa Ramanujam, 01.07.22

Galatta:
'This film is overstuffed. (...) The generic and conventional nature of the writing never lets you forge a deep and true emotional connection with Nambi Narayanan. (...) It is easy to see why Nambi's story inspired Madhavan - it is not just an important part of modern Indian history but also material for riveting cinema. But Rocketry doesn't make us see Nambi Narayanan the way Madhavan does. The man remains aloof. (...) We see a man who needed a better biopic'.
Baradwaj Rangan

Mid-Day: ***
'Rocketry - The Nambi Effect is doubtlessly an over-sincere film. (...) The production design and VFX passes grade, surely. It feels lambi (long), not so much for the running time as for the writing (scenes, story, structure etc), that doesn’t adequately draw out the characters (particularly the leading man), in a way that you wanna root for them viscerally. (...) While the story feels too flat for far too long, the penny really drops, when actual events start unfolding in the final 30 minutes or so. Which is when the point of this picture kicks in, and wherein resides its relevance as well'.
Mayank Shekhar, 02.07.22

Film Companion:
'For more than two-thirds of its 155-minute running time, Rocketry resides in the clouds and beyond. It orbits the limitlessness of its protagonist's talent. (...) The final third, however, unfurls like an Indian horror story. (...) We've seen that gimmicky Google-Earth-style opening shot in several movies over the years, but Rocketry uses it as a visual prophecy. The context is fitting. (...) To Madhavan's credit as both actor and first-time director, he never lets his physical trasformation hijack the essence of a phase. A restlessness runs through his performance, which keeps the character wedded to country and career. Madhavan's writing, too, manages to walk the thin line between scientific jargon and emotional accessibility. A lot of the dialogue is rooted in the evolution of rocket technology, but as a viewer, one rarely feels excluded or spoken down to for the sake of authenticity'.
Rahul Desai, 01.07.22

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* Cannes 2022: Madhavan on the 'life transforming' power of Rocketry - The Nambi Effect, Anupama Chopra, Film Companion, 23 maggio 2022. Intervista concessa da R. Madhavan:
'What a herculean labor of love this film is for you. Not just act, but to produce, to write. (...) What is your headspace right now? (...)
I met Mr. Nambi (...) in Trivandrum and I was sure that I wasn't seeing the whole picture. He was so angry that people called him a traitor 20 years ago. He was still holding on to that, he was telling me he could prove that he was innocent. When I started the film, the verdict hadn't yet come out. (...) I took six months to write this story and then I went to meet him again to get the story approved. (...) And he started telling me things about his story that nobody knew. (...) So it started as this overwhelming desire to tell this man's story. (...) Direction was thrust upon me at the last minute. I had a breakdown. I had a choice: to drop the film, forget about the money that we spent on it, or to direct it. Mr. Nambi and my investors were very keen on the latter. (...) I understood the science because I studied (...) Electronics. I'm vastly experienced with engineering. (...)
Mr. Nambi was on your set. He was involved with the script. Given that, how do you, as a director, take creative liberties if you have to? (...)
He wasn't really on set. He was just there to help us with the scientific aspects. (...) My big challenge as a writer was: How do you explain rocket science? (...) In this film, I had to take out stuff to make it believable. (...) There are no liberties being taken. (...) The truth is stranger than fiction and much more dramatic and impactful'.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'An over-the-top dramatisation of an underworld, in the margins of Mumbai; built entirely inside a studio, mixed with measured melodrama, mujra [traduzione grossolana: danza di cortigiane], and music. This is Broadway-style, mass theatrical entertainment before a camera, in a way that Bhansali has consistently pulled off over two and half decades, regardless of the script. Most directors lose it along the way. As screenwriter, music composer, director, he continues to imbue this scale with a personal/auteur touch still. (...) I see no Indian filmmaker who does this genre with as much conviction, hence as convincingly. (...) You either go with the flow, or don’t. (...) This isn’t quite a “fem-jep” (female in jeopardy) flick, masquerading as feminism. It’s about an ambitious Gangubai, taking life by the horn, and driving it on a fancy car, wherever she likes. Of which I don’t know how much of it is accurate. The bigger issue with merging Bhansali/Bollywood fantasy with fact is that the treatment must allow as much time for the story-telling as well; tightness suffers - making this seem a movie, scene after scene after songs, that’s much longer than it should be. And yet, it’s the aesthetically choreographed sequences - every moment of it - that raise the bar'.
Mayank Shekhar, 25.02.22

Film Companion:
'Bhansali is not so much a builder of stories as a maker of moments. (...) Gangubai Kathiawadi has many such moments: each more lyrical than the next. (...) Are these pieces of pleasure enough to indulge a broken puzzle? The answer lies in the kind of story GK chooses to be. (...) Bhansali's uncomplicated spectacle is a tale of two halves. (...) The first half is intimate and specific, with (...) Ganga turning into (...) Gangubai through experiences and people rather than pre-written destiny. Characters (...) start to define Gangubai's evolution. These pieces are strung together not by a journey but a personality. (...) The film flows from one time to another with unfussy transitions, with a fluidity rarely seen in Bhansali's heavy-footed historicals. (...) The second half feels like another film altogether (...) almost as though GK is suddenly reminded that it is in fact a bland biographical drama. After a setup of emotional intelligence and curiosity, this is frustrating. The camera starts to revere Gangubai from a distance. (...) She becomes an ideological figure: someone who knows how and why she will be remembered in the future (...) not who she really is. (...) But [Alia] Bhatt's electrifying turn comes very close to vindicating the film's fractured puzzle of moments. (...) The subtext missing from the script can be found in how Bhatt tempers the hurt of her voice and eyes. (...) The casting did feel like a gamble. But everything that was supposed to be a fatal flaw - Bhatt's frightfully young face, diminutive frame, urban gait - becomes a triumph in Gangubai's performative armour'.
Rahul Desai, 25.02.22

'I remember all those adjectives that he would use when he was describing [my character], they would never be without the opposites: 'strong but vulnerable, humorous but has anger and tension in her eyes: this but that.' There was always a 'but' to everything. (...) Even in the performance, he wanted two layers to come out. She's saying something, her eyes are saying something else. (...) Her body language is this, but she's actually feeling that. It was extremely challenging but also what I enjoyed the most. (...)
Not everybody knows about Gangubai's story. (...) But what I enjoyed about it was that there was a point A, B and C. (...) She came to Bombay, (...) gave a speech, (...) met (...) Nehru. But what's interesting is (...) what made her get to those points. Why did she come to Bombay? She wanted to become a heroine. That helps you to carve the personality: was there a filminess in her? Was she a little dramatic or dreamy? (...)
He [Bhansali] draws out of you. He doesn't tell you what to do. He pushes you to find it. (...) He gives you adjectives and wants you to think about it and your body to start feeling it. (...) He likes the unpredictability of performing and creating as well. There are no rules. (...) He is looking for magic at every point. He wants it to hit it in the heart. I don't think there's anybody who is more interested in your ability and potential of really pushing. He is not satisfied, because if he knows that you have it, it will be push until you have really given it all'.

* Sanjay Leela Bhansali on how Alia Bhatt became his Gangubai Kathiawadi, Anupama Chopra, Film Companion, 2 marzo 2022:
'I didn’t want to take her [Alia Bhatt] there [Kamathipura] because somewhere, for her, as a character, when she goes there and sees the world for the first time, it should reflect on her face. I wanted her to explore. (...) She understood that I lived one lane away from Kamathipura, so for me, that world was something that I have absorbed for 30 years. I think we had a great chemistry. She understood exactly what I wanted. There was a little bit of discomfort that she faced on the first day, the first time she did a dialogue scene. She wasn’t understanding what I was trying to get in terms of the attitude because it was a very hard world. It was [about] a very hard, solid woman who speaks with an attitude. That’s how she controls the area. But after that first day, we never looked back. Then she was just flowing and feeling every bit of it.
Initially, when we would discuss the scenes, she would observe my tonality, attitude, what happens to my eyes. Besides that, I would make her participate, asking her about her take on a situation. Suddenly, she started contributing to how she wanted to do a scene, where she would want to do it. I cannot tell you how to do it; I’ll give you some text, I’ll give you the ideas, I’ll talk about stories from the past which has some relevance. Those are the things you give to an intelligent actor - a great actor - like her. When she started becoming Gangu completely, there was very little exchange. When you give an actor the freedom to think, to contribute, to become that person, because finally in front of the camera, it is her who was standing and saying the lines. It’s important that she contributes. That contribution is very valuable too. I improvise a lot, so after a point, she stopped memorizing the lines and play it my way. She never questioned it. If I said, ‘Alia, jump from here to there,’ she would jump with that conviction with which I would want her as an actor to. No questions asked. It was just her belief in the director and my belief in the actor because I know when she’ll jump, there’ll be something special that she will do to it. Every time I throw an ace at her, I’d get two aces thrown back at me. It was a great experience of working for 150 days with an actor who is just there, without the excess baggage of being a star. (...)
The whole idea was that a 16-year-old girl gets trapped into this business, discovers this sordid world and gets up and says, ‘No, I have a voice, I have my rights.’ I wanted that passion in the eyes. This girl [Bhatt] has very powerful eyes, there’s a certain amount of vocal power that she has when she explodes. There’s a scene in the film where she talks to her mother and explodes on the operator. Look at that. When she was preparing for that scene, she was sitting on a chair and I wanted a certain atmosphere. Suddenly, I saw some of my staff were laughing or giggling. I presume that they were laughing at me and I exploded. The whole atmosphere on the set became quiet. It was my way of making those vibes reach to her, of feeling the nerves, of calling the mother, of getting that anger filled and at what note it should explode. I have never told her [about this], even to date. As a director, I don’t like to give direct instructions to people because it limits the actor’s imagination. An actor like her should be given briefs of a certain way where you create what the audience has to feel, but how do you do it has to come from you. I feel that’s the kind of belief that I had in her. When she exploded on the phone and emoted, I said, “My choice was right.”
It took a lot of time for the people to [realize this]. When they saw her on the screen for the first time, that’s when they realized. I was having the last laugh. I believe that you have to look at an actor and say, “I can make you do this.” It is the job of the director to make you realize that, ‘Alia, you have so much potential. You can go global. You have that potential to make India proud. Leave those things that you’ve done, you have done very good films, but this is hardcore. This is a piece of my heart, of all the grime, grunge, humiliation and everything that I have witnessed in my life. I’m now going to let those demons flow out. Be a part of it’ - without having to say these words. She just went along with me and started discovering something about her. I saw this actor blossom. She found the full potential of what Alia Bhatt is all about'.

'The art and production design in every Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is a whole mood in itself. Whatever the setting or the story, audiences have come to expect that signature look - dripping with rich detail and the maximal use of Indian textile, artwork, colour and texture. His latest, Gangubai Kathiawadi is no exception. Visually, it plays out almost like a painting come to life. But it goes a step further, in that this is probably his most personal work yet. (...) Till he was almost 30, Bhansali lived with his family just one street over from where he sets the film. His school route to and from took him past the brothels and all the characters who inhabited that world every single day. So while the film, its story, the architectural structures and key characters are based on historical facts, what he has done with the look and art design is a homage to some of his earliest childhood memories. The way he tells it, the lane was dotted with six (now derelict) theatre buildings (...) which formed a carousel of assorted impressions that he internalized. One such was the Art Deco design details he soaked in from those buildings, as well as that unique hand-painted movie poster art that began to be developed around Indian cinema in the 1920s. This was a kitschy, over the top way to get people into the cinemas that were made instantly recognizable by the images of enticing cleavages, vixen red lips, lurid colours, broad visible brush strokes and an almost 3D-style typography. (...)
The other strand that runs through both the story and its cinematic representation is the idea that even a ruin can and must have dignity. Architecturally, Bhansali is obsessed with space. Or perhaps the lack of it when he was growing up. He admits that he often made up a parallel reality where he could literally push out the walls of their tiny family home to something larger, grander. This manifests in every film set he has ever had constructed. He is also deeply fascinated by the idea of beauty in distress. In this film, the production design team gives literal expression to these preoccupations, especially in the detailing of the brothel walls - peeling, faded, broken - as well as to all the elements and distressed textures in the rooms, which include artefacts, textiles and practical props like utensils that would have actually been used in his own home at the time. From a treatment and design perspective, the maker admits that he has chosen a romanticized expression of a tough neighbourhood, and a dark and often fearful time in his own formative years. Using his craft, he prefers to show his audiences an artistic interpretation rather than the oppressive reality, and in that process has his own cathartic moment that in a way helps set right the world his five-year-old self once inhabited'.

* Aila, Alia!, Mayank Shekhar, Mid-Day, 20 agosto 2022: 'With Gangubai, Bhatt reveals about Bhansali being the performative inspiration: “I took so much of Sir’s personality and put that into Gangubai’s character - the way he speaks, thinks, has a certain attitude. (...) Because it is in his head. Film is the director’s medium. And then it’s the written word. The actor has to collect all those things and place it in front of the camera”.'

Fonte Wikipedia.
* Il saggio Mafia Queens of Mumbai. In poco tempo Gangubai gestisce diversi bordelli.

RECENSIONI

Hindustan Times: **
'For some reason, Kumar’s actual triumph wasn’t enough - therefore the filmmakers added clichéd adversity. (...) Hrithik Roshan isn’t bad, though his problematic brown face-paint is inconsistent to the point of distraction. The actor plays guilelessness with charm in Super 30 as a Patna boy hungry for the most advanced mathematical equations he can lay his hands on (...). His eyes gleam only when discussing numbers and talking to students, but Super 30 pushes Roshan into awkward directions (...) and hands him too much melodrama'.

* Riferimenti a Bollywood: Sholay, Devdas.

GOSSIP & VELENI

* Qualcuno mi spieghi il bizzarro make-up inflitto a Hrithik.

THACKERAY

Sobilla tumulti.

RECENSIONI

Hindustan Times: *
'Some films make it clear where they stand. (...) I walked in primed for a film back-pedalling extremism in order to justify the late Balasaheb Thackeray’s actions. I expected scenes depicting the politician as a warm and misunderstood figure, and a film that essentially turns him into a hero. This is not that film. Thackeray shockingly relishes the most controversial aspects of the polarising leader’s legend. This film plays out like the origin story of a super-villain. We are shown a character who is a proud bigot, a man who indulges in hate-speech, likens himself to Adolf Hitler, and gives orders for erasure of mosques and for the killing of communists. This is not a whitewash, it’s a confession. (...) Siddiqui revels in the character’s growing villainy, playing him with the irredeemable smugness of a bad guy from a 90s film. Sure, he wears the thick black glasses and sometimes gets the mannerisms right, but despite the big (and obviously fake) nose, he lacks the towering persona of the politician and never even attempts to speak with Thackeray’s distinctive tones. He sounds like the Nawaz we have come to know, (...) someone increasingly drunk on power and eager to kill to get more of it. (...) As a film, the acting is decent, the lookalikes are mostly good (the man playing Thackeray’s father, Keshav, is perfectly cast) and it looks crisp and well produced, with the majority of the film cleverly shot in black and white to depict another time. Despite the slick production and efficient making, the film feels exhaustingly long, primarily because it refuses to believe its protagonist has any flaws. Still, Thackeray is competently and solidly put together, which is why - unlike the easily dismissed The Accidental Prime Minister - people may take this film and its rhetoric to heart. That is the most alarming concern. (...) This film is either oblivious or blatantly self-aware, a work not of propaganda as much as it is a work of pride, the celebration of a legacy of violence. (...) In the final reckoning, Thackeray should be considered a cautionary tale about the ugliness of hate speech. Saying revolting things does not make a revolutionary'.
