TIGER 3

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: * ½
'Felt nothing at all, throughout, but for that SRK cameo sequence. (...) This is SRK’s Pathaan, as much rescuing Tiger, from a Pakistani prison, as the audience itself from this film. You also sense in that scene how strikingly fresh/sorted SRK looks in the action genre, post Pathaan, Jawan. Salman Khan, the hero of this franchise, on the other hand, while rugged enough to play Tiger, appears slightly bloated, jaded, even tired, perhaps. (...) The Emraan Hashmi villain wholly fades away after sometime. What you’re left with is a non-stop series of stunts and sceneries, over a totally joyless, humourless starship enterprise. (...) They’ve attempted a supposedly, albeit randomly complex script in a Salman flick! Seriously, why bother?'.
Mayank Shekhar, 12.11.23

Film Companion:
'I like that all the three franchises of the YRF's spy universe are designed to serve their respective superstars. They're built around the heroes - the storytelling not only platforms but also protects their image. War (2019), for example, is an ode to Hrithik Roshan's swag and fluidity; the camera slows down around him, savouring the way he strolls and breathes and looks. Every meta plot point and song becomes a reminder of his physical relevance - of sensuality, even - in a largely asexual genre. Pathaan (2023) is an ode to Shah Rukh Khan's intelligence; the writing savours the way he thinks, plans and absorbs (both pleasure and pain). Every meta moment becomes a reminder of his social and emotional significance in a largely apolitical genre. And Tiger 3 (...) is an ode to the stiff masculinity of the 'original' YRF spy. Given how little a Salman Khan hero moves on screen, the filmmaking is forced to be more kinetic. (...) The camera, co-stars, flying objects and overall narrative must move faster to create an illusion that Tiger is moving. His inertia then gets repositioned as style and (...) artistic minimalism. So every set piece becomes a reminder of his vintage brawn in a largely automated genre. (...) When the inevitable cameo arrives, one star's wit and agility dignifies the other's (...) rigidity. (...) Maneesh Sharma does a slick job of keeping the film busy. The setup is effective. The [villain] (...) gets several hero-entry shots, because he represents the hostility of new-age nationalism. In most films, he'd have been deified for wanting a war. (...) He has the sort of main-character energy that makes for some neat moments. (...) However, this default velocity of the film is also its undoing. The problem with Tiger 3 is that - cool Katrina Kaif and compelling antagonist aside - it doesn't know when to stop moving. In its quest to make Tiger outdo his (franchise) rivals, the film barrels past its muscular identity and tumbles down a familiar valley. One of the remarkable things about the YRF spyverse is that it's based on soldiers who reject conventional notions of patriotism. (...) Each of them goes 'rogue' and operates outside a structure that lets them down. (...) This cocktail of intent and dissent is their superpower. (...) Tiger 3 starts off with the right ideas. (...) But the film's Salman Khan-sized aura means that it's not enough to protect the world from hatred. In this case, it amounts to something more specific: Saving Pakistan from itself. (...) Even if the broader message is fine ('harmony' as envisioned by the House of Yash Raj), the result is patronising. (...) Someone like Tiger doesn't offer help, he imposes help. (...) There's a thin line between heroism uniting two countries and heroism implying that one is incapable of cleaning its own mess - and Tiger 3 keeps crossing that line'.
Rahul Desai, 12.11.23

* Riferimenti all'Italia: Tiger menziona il tiramisù.
* Film che trattano lo stesso tema: Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, Pathaan, War.

GOSSIP & VELENI

* [Spoiler]:
- Emraan Hashmi in versione sbarbata, all'inizio, è del tutto considerabile (prendo nota);
- non ho capito perché il pediatra è morto;
- nello scontro finale, Aatish spara ripetutamente a Tiger con un mitra a un metro e lo manca. Che mira del cazzo per un agente segreto;
- le ragazzine pachistane che suonano l'inno nazionale indiano, beh, scena zuccherosissima, però, cosa vi devo dire?, l'ho apprezzata (crocifiggetemi).
* Di tutto lo Spy Universe di Yash Raj Films, alla fine la saga di Tiger è la mia preferita - mi riferisco a Ek Tha Tiger e Tiger 3 -, perché è quella che si prende meno sul serio, anche se il Re in Pathaan è fighissimissimo, e Hrithik Roshan in War di una bellezza da togliere il fiato.
* Solito giretto in Wikipedia. Dunque:
- nella classifica degli incassi 2023 dei film hindi, nelle prime dieci posizioni ben quattro titoli (Jawan primo, Pathaan secondo, Dunki quinto, Tiger 3 sesto), non pesantemente nazionalisti, sono interpretati da superdivi musulmani per nulla progovernativi. Non male;

- un thriller originale, ma è un peccato che l'assassino venga rivelato a metà film, stratagemma narrativo sempre più comune (la giustificazione: la trama non è centrata su chi fa cosa, bensì sul come e sul perché lo fa);
- una storia d'amore dall'estetica morbida e sognante;
- a tratti una divertente black comedy;
- una riflessione sulla critica cinematografica, amatoriale inclusa, e sulle motivazioni che dovrebbero spingere un regista a realizzare i suoi progetti;
- un'incursione nel mondo dell'industria hindi, da tempo nell'occhio del ciclone (e i professionisti del settore sembrano ripiegarsi su se stessi per trovare una conferma del valore del proprio lavoro);

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: *** 1/2
'Frankly, the premise of this serial-killer picture is so frickin’ delightfully absurd that you simply fall for the idea, first - because, how can you not? (...) This is deeply unique/original. As are films, in general, of writer-director R. Balki. That, I suspect, essentially emanate from a terse, one-line idea. (...) Typical to his style, what Balki tightly weaves around his thought is actually a lightness of mainstream touch. (...) Now, practically anyone with fingers and a cellphone is a film reviewer. Which is what makes Chup a really well-timed, contemporary film - if you expand its inherent point to the ‘troll culture’ that surrounds us. With folks on social media, in particular, callously directing sickly barbs at public figures in general, without a thought at how it affects those the darts land on. I saw callous movie critics in this meta movie, as merely a metaphor. And yes, it did make me think of my job a little more - a reason this film feels so, so close to home'.
Mayank Shekhar, 24.09.22

Firstpost: ** 1/2
'In the first half of Chup, Balki succeeds in creating an atmosphere of intrigue, with a blend of a deliberately languorous pace that is a curious contrast to the urgency of the police’s task. (...) The film’s grip loosens considerably as it rolls along, due to the weakness of the love saga at the centre of these proceedings. (...) Shreya and Dulquer are both capable of fine acting, but any emotional resonance they might have achieved is overshadowed by the director’s preoccupation with ambience and appearance. (...) Its critique of criticism is largely on point, taking on financially corrupt reviewers, those who act like astrologers predicting a film’s box-office fate, and those with insufficient knowledge of cinema, all this without coming across as a condescending lecture and without caricaturing individual critics or lampooning the job. (...) Sunny Deol is unusually restrained in Chup until a Gadar-esque moment that ruins everything for him and is strangely out of character for the policeman he plays. (...) Chup never fully rises above being interesting in theory. (...) Despite its positives, Chup’s aspirations to grandeur make it far less engaging than its uncommon theme might suggest. Balki’s film fails to grasp the essence of Guru Dutt’s magic, which was rooted not merely in the beauty of visuals and music, but in the ability to use both to capture the pain, mischief, sense of humour, love and longing of his characters with empathy. In contrast, Chup feels distant from its characters and uninvolved'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

* You're not becoming a critic to tear cinema down, intervista concessa da Raja Sen a Patcy N., pubblicata da Rediff il 19 ottobre 2022:
'How did the idea of Chup happen? Whose idea was it?
It was very much Balki's idea. He is someone I have reviewed in the past, often not very favourably. (...) At some point, he called me and said, why don't you come to the office, I want to discuss an idea with you. I used to be in advertising many, many, years ago and Balki is an absolute legend in the advertising world. I thought this would be interesting. When I met him, he told me that there's an idea of a film about somebody killing film critics. Because I had just quit film criticism, it felt it was really well timed. It felt like a very meaty idea. I don't think people have made films on critics, especially not this subject. He said I would like you to be a part of this. I said let's start. I had done film writing in the past, but those films had been written and I came on board to change lines... it was not collaborative. I was looking forward to creatively collaborating with a cool person and film-maker.
Tell us about the writing process. (...)
I was frequently called to put on the critic's hat and scrutinise the work. (...) Balki and I primarily think in English. Chup unapologetically has a fair bit of English because we thought it was real for the characters. It's about an artiste and a critic. After a while, I started wearing the artiste's hat, and much more sympathetic to them, saying, 'We should be harder on the critics.' Balki, on the other hand, would say 'No, no, the critics are right.' So it was a very interesting process. Balki even went back and read pretty much every single word I've said about him (in film reviews), and a lot of it is not very complimentary. That was quite an eye opener for me that he, as a creator, collaborator and artiste, was very open to understanding where I was coming from. (...) He realised that critics become critics only because they love cinema. You're not becoming a critic to tear cinema down, you become a critic because the job entails watching a 100 films a year, out of which there will be five or six good films. It's really a glutton for punishment, but you're also optimistic and want to see exciting things. (...)
Whose idea was it to make Guru Dutt the reference point? And why Guru Dutt and his film Kaagaz Ke Phool?
We were thinking about artistes, who have been hit hard by criticism. That was the first name that popped to mind because when Kaagaz Ke Phool happened, it was a commercial failure. That might not have hurt Guru Duttsaab as much as the fact that it was critically savaged. People said it was a failure, they called it self-indulgent. It was a very personal film for him. When we look back at that film, decades later, we love it and call it a classic. But at that point of time, it led to a great depression and introspection. It's not a coincidence that he did not direct again. He was such a prolific director, making films every one or two years, but he decided not to direct any more. It can't have been a coincidence; he must have been deeply hurt. So we were trying to explore that... somebody, who made a film that is (later) universally acknowledged as a classic, is one of the greatest Hindi films of all time... For a man to pour himself so personally into the film, and then to find it failing. Guru Dutt is very much a part of the film. (...)
Did you have a say in the casting?
Yes. The danger of getting a critic on board is that he will meddle and give his opinion everywhere! Balki was such a generous collaborator, he would listen to all of us. I was definitely a part of all the conversations we had about art direction or costumes... I was a very excited and hungry fly on the wall. I even sat in on distributor meetings, which is the most surreal thing in the world. When we wrote the title character, I remember looking at Balki and saying, 'Oh my God. This is such a difficult part, who will play it?' (...) Dulquer is such a special performer. He lifts the material. He came on set with so much conviction and intensity. He was also clear that this was something far out of his comfort zone. (...) Shooting with him was a great experience. He's very nice to hang out with, very cine literate, very eager to embrace feedback. He would do a shot, and ask pretty much everyone around him how good it was, what he could do better'.

AN ACTION HERO

S-C-A-N-S-A-T-E-V-I

TRAMA

* In aereo.

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: **
'Trust actor Ayushmann Khurrana (...) to sign up for a proper ‘action film’, while wholly subverting the genre itself. (...) In terms of premise, and for the most part, (...) An Action Hero is a genuinely clever picture. (...) Also in terms of how the story flows - it’s not told, it unravels, as it should. You’re taken places. Up until you’re with the filmmakers, you’re in for a decent ride. (...) This is, to be fair, an engaging film from the get go, with enough masala/material in it to also humorously weigh in on the star-struck world. (...) The pre-interval portions, being the set-up; it’s total payoff, after. This leap of imagination lands nowhere after halftime - once the hero himself starts getting deeper and deeper into shit. As does the film, with no way to get out of it too. Full respect for the dive/effort though'.
Mayank Shekhar, 02.12.22

Film Companion:
'Anirudh Iyer's An Action Hero is a cracking update of Fan - not least because it recognises that, in the current climate, (...) all it takes is a vindictive politician. The media does the rest. (...) AAH is far more astute. (...) The sight of a flawed but technically moral superstar having to leave the country to dodge scrutiny is strangely moving. The antagonisation of this film industry over the last few years hasn't been easy to watch. So in terms of its commentary on the frayed relationship between show business and increasingly entitled audiences, AAH is almost cathartic. Bhoora, (...) the murderous politico, also represents an average viewer blinded by ego and class-rage cliches; he knows the truth, but it's the national discourse that urges him to make an example of (or troll) the rich star. Maanav's [il protagonista] (...) struggle is basically Bollywood's own uphill battle to repair its reputation'.
Rahul Desai, 02.12.22

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'This is, at its core, a film about gender/sexual relations, meaning men, and women - between the young and the old; indeed, among the old, and among the young. Once you get that, it becomes simple to navigate this warm space. (...) This picture kinda falls into a confused space a lot of the times - and you may have to patiently engage with the characters, in order to absorb what it is that they're really going through, and how that makes sense for the point the picture is trying to make, eventually. (...) Doctor G is director Anubhuti Kashyap's debut feature. (...) The heartening fact is that she has a voice, by which I mean she actually has something to say - and can execute it entertainingly enough'.
Mayank Shekhar, 15.10.22

Film Companion:
'There's something about Doctor G. The story (...) follows a familiar trajectory. The setting (...) is stagey. At first glance, this is a formulaic social-message entertainer that does the little things well. The supporting cast, for instance, is spotless. (...) Muslim characters are not fetishised but normalised. (...) The film's wokeness, however, remains more playful - it has an eye on the cultural discourse in this country, but doesn't flaunt its themes. Yet, if one digs deeper, Doctor G works for a specific reason. It's a rare Ayushmann Khurrana movie that functions as a critique - and course-correction - of previous Ayushmann Khurrana movies. (...) The first half of Doctor G unfolds like the Khurrana-trope-generator narrative we've come to expect over the years. (...) [In] the Khurrana arc (...) illumination is treated as more of a narrative contest than a social ideology. (...) But the second half of Doctor G deconstructs this age-old template. It begins where most Khurrana films end, suggesting personal evolution is not limited to the design of a 'winning' story. If the first half was the movie we're conditioned to watch, the second reveals the consequences of choosing to change. (...) More than once, we see Shefali Shah's Dr. Nandini Srivastava cut Uday [il protagonista] down to size, even in the moments he thinks he's owned. Her presence reflects the influence of a female film-maker (Anubhuti Kashyap), and becomes a constant reminder that men and movie characters like Uday are celebrated too easily, often for things as simple as doing their job and not being awful people. (...) She is actually a reality check for both Uday and the film's viewers. (...) His bond with Fatima [la protagonista] becomes (...) a fresh subversion of all those glorified Bollywood heroes who interpret a girl's reluctance as a sign of her consent. (...) Most Hindi films take the shortcut of presenting a blatantly-flawed protagonist so that the redemption feels tangible. Perhaps if Uday were introduced as a man who is not so obviously guileless, Doctor G might have been a more rewarding story. But there is a lot to appreciate about the decisions the film takes towards the end; there's never a sense that Uday is a finished product. (...) The film may end, but you suspect that the man is still figuring things out'.

KANTARA

Difficile rispondere.

RECENSIONI

Deccan Herald: *** 1/2
'The visual style of ‘Kantara’ reminds you of the uncontrolled chaos in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s films. It’s amazing how Rishab [Shetty] (...) takes less time to establish the setting. ‘Kantara’ also attempts to expose the uncomfortable truths of the human mind. (...) Episodes that celebrate the spirit of coastal Karnataka offer an immersive experience. (...) Right from food to dialect to sacred customs to a host of quirky characters, (...) 'Kantara' is an engaging cultural tour. The efforts of B. Ajaneesh Loknath and Arvind S. Kashyap make ‘Kantara’ a technical marvel. There is a constant shift in mood in the film and Ajaneesh’s background score, at every turn of the plot, is dipped in authenticity. The use of different sounds complements the film’s folk flavour. Arvind goes beyond just celebrating the scenic landscape of the Western Ghat region. He supports the movie’s dark tonality. His camerawork is marked by an adventurous energy, especially in the racy and explosive portions. Apart from being technically rich, ‘Kantara’ is a film filled with terrific conflicts. Yet, it keeps you at an arm’s length as far as emotions are concerned. The director in Rishab succeeds in exuding unconventionality on screen but the writer in him fails to construct solid character arcs. For instance, it’s a great idea to make a woman (Sapthami Gowda in a weak performance) from the community work for the forest department, which the villagers detest. But Rishab doesn’t flesh out the character’s full potential, just like he keeps the forest officer’s balancing of personal and professional conflict at a generic level. This hampers a usually-reliable Kishore’s performance as he is forced to remain one-note. Similarly, the landlord's vested intentions are revealed without any build-up but given how brilliant Achyuth [Kumar] is, the character’s sudden switch in the trait is made invisible by his effortless transformation. Having shared the screen with gifted actors, it has taken a career-best effort from Rishab to emerge the best. His internal preparation and the hard work to perfect the external makeover for the stylised bhootha kola performance are commendable. He gets into a different zone in the jaw-dropping climax, which comes after an ambitious yet exhaustive action sequence. Rishab’s stunning act in the final 15 minutes is sure to be discussed for a long time'.
Vivek M.V., 30.09.22

The Hindu:
'From a general glance at the Kannada movies in the last five years, it appears that the Shettys (Rishab Shetty, Rakshit Shetty and Raj B. Shetty, better known as the ‘RRR’ of Coastalwood) are changing cinema to a certain extent, in terms of content rooted in native ethos. Rishab Shetty (...) strongly believes in his theory that cinema will be more universal, if its content is regional and trust is reposed in regionalism. Kantara is a continuation of his engagement with regional content; he has once again experimented with the much-discussed issue of feudalism, environmental protection and forest land encroachment in general. In Kantara, he has turned his focus on folklore and the native cultures. (...) Set against the rural background of forest wealth smuggling, Rishab narrates a story of the belief system of generations in the coastal region and focuses on the sacred customs of the region with the powerful support of the native village nestled in the forest land. He succeeds in meticulously bringing a tale of myths, legends and superstition, and that too in his native dialect. (...) But, it is cataclysmic that in his enthusiasm to showcase, native culture, Rishab glamourises native practices. Such attempts to please the audience through a commercial framework lead to the narration losing traction and issues get diluted'.
Muralidhara Khajane, 30.09.22

Galatta:
'Rishab Shetty (...) delivers a joyous and very exuberant performance as Shiva, the protagonist of Kantara. (...) The screenplay uses many devices to tie the past and the present - or rather, to bring the past to the present and show how the two are always intertwined. (...) The most important past-present connection is a fearsome scream, which is also a metaphor for the cry of anguish of the landless. We hear this cry in the present-day Bhootha Kola performances, and we get into the meat of the plot: Who "owns" the forests? (...) Kantara follows the classic template of The Chosen One, a man who appears ordinary but is destined for greatness. At first, Shiva is as ordinary as ordinary can be. (...) And like every self-respecting masala-movie hero, he locks horns with the antagonist, (...) the forest officer Murali, nicely played with gruff authority by Kishore. (...) In short, we are either in a masala movie disguised as folklore, or in folklore disguised as a masala movie. Either way, everything has a touch of symbolism. (...) All of this is richly shot by Arvind S. Kashyap, and elevated by B. Ajaneesh Loknath's score, which is simultaneously as big as rock music and as subtle as the gently rippling notes at the film's opening. And some of the action choreography is superb. There are issues in the writing. (...) There's a taken-for-granted quality about th(e) love story. (...) The villains are easy enough to spot from a mile away, and a character's change of heart is entirely expected - meaning, the narrative could have used a lot more tension. And in such a story, I wish they'd avoided the cliches - like Shiva bursting in fury when his mother is slapped around, or the really cheap shot of a little girl being killed. But the bigger picture of Kantara is in the smaller details. It’s in the way Leela is torn between her affiliation to her job, i.e. the government, and her people, i.e. the tribals. It's in the way Nature is manifested as wild animals, as forests, as fire, as rain. When Shiva is drenched in a downpour, he says he isn't wet; he has been cleansed. It’s almost like Nature has performed a ritual on him. Despite the generic nature of the middle portions, the closing stretch complements the film’s opening beautifully. And there’s very little more potent than the rush of myth'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'“I strongly believe in the line - more regional is more universal. I think what we are doing wrong with the whole pan-Indian cinema dream is that we are trying to make bigger films. What’s the point when I try to make the kind of film that has already been made before in some other industry or in the west? Why will audiences pay money to watch such a film in theatres when they can watch it on OTT? In Kantara, I took elements from my own village and mixed it with a story about the conflict between some patch of land owned by some farmers and the forest department. It’s actually a story of humans versus nature. The differentiating aspect was the use of the mythology which is very region-specific and it worked wonders with the audience”.'
* Kantara's success nothing short of miracle: Director Rishab Shetty, Prathima Nandakumar, The Week, 6 novembre 2022:
'Your style of narration stands apart as you combine a contemporary issue with a complex native tradition like spirit worship. How did you get these layers together? (...)
I finished writing the script of Kantara in four months, along with a couple of co-writers, and we shot the entire movie in my hometown, Keradi (...) within 96 days. I strongly believe in approaching a subject with positivity. This story has nativity, our roots, beliefs, rituals and sentiments. I wanted to deal with a common subject avoiding any negativity. I wanted people to walk out of the theatres with a good feeling and energy. (...)
Your performance in the last 20 minutes of the movie, when the spirit manifests in you, has become a talking point. How did you prepare for the challenging role?
I am a trained yakshagana (traditional theatre) artiste and used to don the role for six years, when I was younger. But nothing could have prepared you for a role like this one, as it has several shades. My character, Shiva, is an easygoing, romantic village lad who has shades of grey. When I enact the role of the daiva [divinità locale] it is a spiritual experience. The kambala (buffalo race) scenes demanded an athlete, so I trained in martial arts for the film. I must have watched at least a thousand videos of bhootha kolas (animistic ritual dance) and interacted a lot with the community of daiva narthakas [danzatori rituali] during the making of the film to get it right. I also followed a strict regimen, quit eating non-vegetarian food during the shoot and walked barefoot. During the shooting of the kola, I chose to fast'.
* Rishab Shetty: ‘I believe in the practice and I have portrayed it’, Vikhar Ahmed Sayeed, Frontline, 24 novembre 2022:
'How did you come up with the story of Kantara?
Around 20 or 30 years ago, an incident took place in my village which helped me begin writing Kantara. This incident involved a fracas between a forest officer and a farmer over a piece of agricultural land. When I recalled the incident, I didn’t see these two persons as mere individuals but as representatives of humanity and nature, their clash representing this conflict. I started thinking about this and about how our entire culture in coastal Karnataka revolves around agriculture. Linked to this agriculture-based culture are the daivas (local deities), who are an intrinsic part of our lives, which I brought into my story to complete the tale of the conflict between the elements of nature and humanity. According to me, daiva aradhane (worship of local deities) bridges this conflict. Daiva aradhane brings together everyone equally in its rituals. Even to this day, when daivas are worshipped, members of a particular village, along with their families who may be scattered across the world, ensure that they gather for the rituals. There is no caste element in the Kola (the ritual dance which is part of daiva aradhane) and it even transcends religion, as there are Muslim and Christian daivas. (...)
The subtitle of the film is Ondu Danta Kathe (a legend). Is the film actually based on a legend of coastal Karnataka?
Not directly, but we have thousands of daivas in coastal Karnataka, each of whom has a story. All these stories have come to us as folk songs. There are many sagas where the daiva is challenged, or the daiva performs miracles, and these have actually been witnessed by people who have recorded these instances. How does a story become a legend? Generations of storytellers repeat the same story, giving birth to a legend. I brought together many real incidents, legends, and bits of folklore that I’ve heard over the years and set my fictional story in the world of Kantara. (...)
The climactic scene has become the most popular segment, with many viewers awed by the way in which it is conceptualised. How did you come up with this scene?
It is difficult to answer your question because it’s not easy to communicate what I experienced during the shooting of this scene. In the screenplay, there was only one line about this scene, which stated that the spirit of Guliga daiva would enter Shiva on the instruction of Panjurli daiva. When the daiva’s spirit enters a person, that person struggles to withstand the energy and loses consciousness sometimes. I had to portray this frenzied moment and I prepared for this by watching thousands of videos of Guliga daiva on YouTube. I had also seen the Kola from my childhood, and a team of daiva narthakas (ritual dancers) was with me throughout and I was discussing the portrayal with them continuously. As a devotee myself, I was clear that the portrayal should be accurate because these are sensitive matters of belief, and the visuals of the scene played out in my head. (...)
Kantara has a strong subtext of caste discrimination built into it. What inspired you to underline this aspect?
As a writer, my strength is my keen observation of society. I have seen this society [of coastal Karnataka] very closely from childhood and I’ve grown up seeing caste discrimination. I belong to an upper-caste community (...) but the ill-treatment of lower castes made an impression on me. Nowadays, caste differences are reducing as societies progress but because Kantara is set in the 1990s, I had to incorporate aspects of caste discrimination as well. It was important'.

DOBAARAA

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ***
'This is the least likely among what we've come to expect of an 'Anurag Kashyap' film. (...) It's something that at least I'm unaware has ever been attempted in a Hindi film before. (...) How does this (...) land on the lay audience? In a way that it's instantly accessible. (...) Despite the plot (...) Dobaaraa is a pretty straight and simple film, with a trippy background score, and even a proper Hindi soundtrack'.
Mayank Shekhar, 21.08.22

Film Companion:
'Dobaaraa makes a case for mental well-being rather than just physical healing. The occupants of this film seem to be fighting the genre itself in pursuit of a humanity - and a sense of continuity - that's often denied to them by narrative gimmickry. (...) It's a fairly faithful adaptation of Mirage, so a lot of its hidden complexities and surface-level enterprise can be traced back to the DNA of the Spanish film. (...) Despite going through serious upheavals, the character of Antara feels curiously flat. Taapsee Pannu's presence is urgent, but Antara often looks to be reacting to the tricks of the narrative instead of the circumstances of a life. (...) Her quest to be believed (...) feels mechanical. As does her readymade bond with the cop. (...) This isn't exactly a suspenseful movie, which is why the film-making falters while teasing the preconceived notions of the audience. (...) Doobaara engages more than it entertains. (...) Its unwitting depth is the mark of a good genre movie - it becomes what you want it to be'.

Punto debole: personaggi distanti, scritti con scarsa cura.

MONICA O MY DARLING

A qualunque costo. A qualunque costo. A qualunque costo.

'Yup there’s a ‘film-buff’ film. And this is it - a movie that’s too much about movies. Meaning, you watch, parallelly, looking out for references, homages to other pix. And which also makes such flicks worth a rewatch. (...) In terms of genre, this would be what’s called ‘noir’. (...) This film is fairly self-contained - the quasi-crafted world revolves around few peeps. None of them trustable, to begin with. And, indeed, we’re dealing with a life of crime, or multiple crimes, actually. (...) There is a catty/mischievous overtone, throughout. (...) I found no Tarantino-like pornography of violence in this movie at all. The most elaborate action sequence is shot from a distance, with a glass window serving as a frame, within the frame. (...) This movie’s inherent joyousness is altogether sustained by zany characters that might seem like caricatures - with no one really ever going obviously over-the-top, at any moment. Starting with the man-eating secretary, apparently playing the whole office - that’s Huma Qureshi, totally killing it, in & as Monica! Opposite her, the smart, small-town hustler, moving up the corporate ladder - a perfect blend of confident/cool, from the exterior, but someone whose pants perennially on fire - Rajkummar Rao plays this in a way that only he can pull off with such ease. (...) You’re in the moment, as an audience - compelled to think nothing in particular. What matters most isn’t so much ‘what happens next’, as ‘wow, did not see that coming!’ And you don’t know where this film is going - absolutely the best reason to get in on the ride, right away'.
Mayank Shekhar, 12.11.22

Film Companion:
'The running time of Monica O My Darling is a little over two hours, but it took me three hours to complete the new Netflix thriller. (...) I spent a majority of the film pausing and replaying moments. (...) The reasons are purely sensory. It's just... fun to watch. It has something to do with (...) the 'musicality of film'. This musicality was once inherent to the beats of a Bollywood potboiler, but it's a forgotten art in modern Hindi cinema. Several scenes in MOMD (...) reclaim the harmony of timing and tone. (...) They simply summon a feeling, a finger-snapping rhythm that's difficult to resist. The movie comes at us from this space, where narrative style doubles up as visceral substance. That's the thing about director Vasan Bala. His cinephilia (...) is a measure of how he lives - and how much he understands. (...) Through the prism of Bala's free-flowing cinephilia (...) MOMD recalibrates life as an expression of the movies we love'.

Punto debole: l'esuberante inconsistenza e qualche ingenuità.

* Mohammad: There's God's word and then those who interpret it and fools like us forget God and get swayed (ecco che gli incassi si dimezzano).

RECENSIONI

Mid-Day: ****
'Yes, this is the same story. It is not the same film. The Indian adaptation (by Atul Kulkarni) is totally seeped in desi, earthy imagination. And the original mustn’t matter. For, who’s this film for? The India that must watch its own story, told so softly, entertainingly! And to give Laal Singh Chaddha the love he so sweetly, innocently gives back'.

Film Companion:
'Atul Kulkarni's writing - and his sense of translation - manages to suggest that Chaddha's mere presence is political. His guileless reading of religion - rooted in his mother's sugarcoating of communal violence as "malaria" - (...) is political. (...) Even his unwillingness to be political - and his desire to just be - is political. Gump's heroism was an extension of his national identity: Be American and success will find you. But Chaddha's heroism is an indictment of his cultural identity: Be human and history will remember you. (...) Aamir Khan, the producer, deserves credit for recognising Forrest Gump as a film begging to be reformed rather than remade. And for backing Advait Chandan, (...) a director blessed with the narrative manipulation of Rajkumar Hirani and the visual flair of Anurag Basu. (...) But unlike Forrest Gump, which was relentlessly redeemed by Hanks, this film works in spite of - and not because of - Aamir Khan, the actor. (...) His performance is excessive. (...) He reacts better than he acts. (...) Kareena Kapoor Khan doesn't overcook the role. She plays Rupa as someone who - in stark contrast to Laal - is so desperate to make history that she gets consumed by it. (...) It's been a while since I've enjoyed a Hindi big-screen experience like Laal Singh Chaddha. A lot of it is down to the film's marriage of mind with heart. The thinking often morphs into a way of feeling. The writing often digs a tunnel through the political to reach the personal - and it's this fable-like dimension that finds new context'.

RASSEGNA STAMPA

'"The process began 14 years ago. Aamir [Khan] had produced a film called Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. After the premiere, we were sitting in his house, talking about the movies we like, and he mentioned Forrest Gump and that we both like it. The next day, I had an outdoor shoot which got cancelled. I had 12-15 days in my hand. The DVD of Forrest Gump was lying so I decide to watch it again. While watching the film, I thought what if this character was Indian, what would happen, and I started taking notes. After an hour and so, I felt that I should attempt writing the script. I started from the first scene onwards. I did not know if I would be able to complete the script, but in, the next few days I completed the script, and in the next 2-3 days I completed the second and third draft." (...) Atul [Kulkarni] shared that he always wanted Aamir to play the protagonist in the Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump. "It was completely written for him. (...) It was always Aamir whom I thought would play the character".'

* Riferimenti al cinema indiano: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Swades, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Don, Om Shanti Om, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Main Hoon Na, Sushmita Sen.
* Riferimenti all'Italia: credo di aver intravisto Sonia Gandhi nel filmato di repertorio sulla morte di Indira.
* Film che trattano lo stesso tema: My name is Khan.
* Per molte ragioni (fra cui un numero minore di titoli in due anni causa coronavirus), non è un buon periodo per il regale triumvirato dei Khan. In dettaglio, considerando la classifica delle prime dieci posizioni del botteghino solo indiano dal 2014 ad oggi (ammesso che i dati condivisi da Wikipedia siano attendibili):
- Aamir, il meno prolifico: bene PK (2014, ad oggi settimo) e Dangal (2016, quarto); male Thugs of Hindostan (2018) e LSC (2022) che non entrano nemmeno nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima;
- Salman, il più prolifico: bene Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015, ottavo); entrano nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima Kick (2014), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Race 3 (2018) e Bharat (2019); male Tubelight (2016), Dabangg 3 (2019) e Radhe (2021);
- Shah Rukh: nessun titolo nelle prime dieci posizioni; entrano nelle posizioni dall'undicesima alla cinquantesima Happy New Year (2014) e Raees (2017); male Dilwale (2015), Fan (2016), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) e Zero (2018 - ad oggi il suo ultimo film).
Includendo gli incassi internazionali, rientrano Dilwale e Thugs of Hindostan:
1 Dangal 2016
6 Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2015
7 PK 2014
9 Sultan 2016
14 Tiger Zinda Hai 2017
20 Prem Ratan Dhan Payo 2015
24 Kick 2014
27 Happy New Year 2014
30 Dilwale 2015
37 Thugs of Hindostan 2018
39 Bharat 2019
45 Raees 2017
46 Race 3 2018.
2017 Tiger Zinda Hai, Raees e Tubelight
2018 Thugs of Hindostan e Race 3
2019 Bharat e Dabangg 3
2021 Radhe.
