CHHICHHORE

In Chhichhore dramma e commedia si incrociano.

Partiamo dalla commedia. Chhichhore racconta la vita in un campus in modo divertente ed abbastanza realistico. I personaggi (e gli attori) sono freschi anche se privi di profondità. Le vicende che li riguardano allegre. I dialoghi esilaranti. Chhichhore osa parlare di pornografia e di masturbazione senza mai scadere nel grossolano. E' la bella copia di quelle agghiaccianti pellicole dal soggetto similare che periodicamente infestano il cinema popolare indiano. E' un prodotto piuttosto curato che, per certi versi e per certi temi, ricorda 3 Idiots. Il ritmo è esuberante, la regia convincente. 

Il dramma però si affianca male alla commedia, appesantendola e sottolineando il messaggio che vuole trasmettere. L'intenzione è lodevole ma la rappresentazione è molto scadente. La pellicola diventa didascalica. Il mondo degli adulti risulta artificioso. I personaggi perdono credibilità. A farne le spese è soprattutto Maya: il suo dolore è posto in secondo piano rispetto all'asprezza del carattere, ed è un errore imperdonabile. I dialoghi sono inascoltabili, la narrazione asfittica. La regia latita. 

Chhichhore alterna alti e bassi qualitativi. La noia è circoscritta, il film intrattiene, anche se la delusione è dietro l'angolo.

TRAMA

Il giovane Raghav attende con ansia i risultati dei suoi esami. Purtroppo viene bocciato, e il ragazzo tenta il suicidio. 

ASSOLUTAMENTE DA NON PERDERE

* La sequenza iniziale dei gavettoni.

* I suggerimenti tattici dell'allenatore di kabaddi.

* La performance calcistica di Sexa, e quella di Mummy al carrom (Google vi spiegherà cos'è, sciagurati!).

ASSOLUTAMENTE DA DIMENTICARE

* Diverse sequenze maldirette e lacrimose: la conversazione telefonica fra Mummy e il figlio, la catena di no ripetuti da tutti i protagonisti al capezzale di Raghav, il piagnisteo di Anni quando discute l'argomento dell'impreparazione dei ragazzi al fallimento, eccetera. Il trucco, le interpretazioni, le vicende e i dialoghi dei personaggi adulti non sono credibili.

'This film is literally all in its writing. Which isn't to suggest that the performers on screen (...) don't match up to the material. Oh, all of them do. They collectively shine, without doubt. (...) The story being told is so deeply universal that I can't imagine anyone not instantly relating to it. (...) Chhichhore is the sort of film that we can all add to, with our own versions of the same story - a user-generated series, if you like. (...) Why's this unique? Because I can't recall any Hindi mainstream movie, in the colour of its language (first-rate dialogues), and the tone of its very being, that's managed to capture what it's actually like to be on an Indian campus (...). It is, in that sense, polar-opposite to the wilful dumbf***ery of, say, Student Of The Year (SOTY), that had as little to do with India as a campus. For its time, Mansoor Khan's Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (JJWS) might appear close to this, but more so for a similar 'joy of life'.

'Indian college movies are made as weapons of mass distraction. They are fluffy and unrealistic and funny and aspirational - flush with melodramatic tropes of heroism and all-or-nothing competitions - because real college life is anything but dramatic. The Mohabbateins and Student of the Years and 3 Idiots of the world are designed as easy escapes from the country’s bleak academic culture. The darker the actual education system, the sillier the narrative tropes. These stories are simply told to make (student) life worth living. (...) The story is unrealistic and exaggerated. For instance, not one book or teacher is revealed. (Subtext: Life is our education). All we see are the ragtag occupants of a “losers” hostel trying to shed their tag by winning a two-month-long sports championship. But for once, this airy and inauthentic tone of a college movie - a very entertaining college movie - has a reason to belong. There is a lot at stake. Filmmakers usually assume their audiences to be (brain)dead and in need of resuscitation. Here, the listener is literally dying, and in need of psychological resuscitation. (...) Dangal director (and ex-IITian) Nitesh Tiwari, along with co-writers Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Mehrotra, locates a context to exercise his “good old days” tone on us. It’s a personal Mary-Poppins rendition of his own past... but it matters. It makes us laugh a little louder and cry a little softer - and be manipulated a little more willingly - because a family’s fate relies on the language of storytelling. The Main Hoon Na style swishes of parody (the 40:1 boy-to-girl ratio in engineering; hero’s friends segregated into categories - porn addict, alcoholic, guttermouth, mommy’s boy, chainsmoker stud; the filmy villain; the cartoon-level team tryouts) belong in this movie. The slow-motion climax, points tables and backroom meltdowns - they belong here. These stereotypes acquire a sense of gravitas. (...) The supporting cast is excellent. (...) Naveen Polishetty, in particular, stands out as Acid. (...) Thanks to this gang, Chhichhore is a hoot, but it’s not flawless. (...) The adults tend to discuss things not as friends, but as movie characters who want to educate the audience. (...) Sushant Singh Rajput gives a typically sincere performance. (...) Eventually though, it’s Tiwari’s understanding of mainstream emotional dynamics that tide the missteps over to frame an enjoyable film. He directs sports better than his contemporaries'.
