90 ML

Se siete interessati all'evoluzione della rappresentazione della figura femminile nel cinema indiano, 90 ML potrebbe essere guardabile. Se però cercate anche un film di fattura decente, girate al largo. 90 ML, sorprendentemente, è scritto, diretto e prodotto da una donna, Anita Udeep. E' una (brutta) commedia per adulti che racconta le vicende di cinque/sei amiche, capitanate dalla gioiosa e inarrestabile Rita. L'intenzione è meritoria. Le donne si confidano senza (troppi) filtri. L'argomento dell'omosessualità è trattato in modo abbastanza innovativo per un prodotto di intrattenimento. I grattacapi procurati dalle ragazze al gangster Sathish e al suo boss sono esilaranti. Rita è un personaggio parecchio fuori dal coro. Ma gli stereotipi non mancano e sono sempre gli stessi: abbigliamento, fumo, alcol, droga, fragoroso sghignazzo perenne. La sceneggiatura è poca cosa, la narrazione ripetitiva, le interpretazioni scadenti, la regia dilettantesca.

TRAMA

Rita è contraria al matrimonio e molla il fighissimo e supportivo partner Venky quando questi, innamorato cotto, le chiede la mano. Thamarai usa le armi della seduzione per strappare Sathish alla criminalità. Suganya rapisce Chris sull'altare. Le amiche vivono nello stesso palazzo, e periodicamente organizzano serate da vivere senza regole o corrono in aiuto di chi fra loro è in difficoltà.

'The film is yet another case of cinematic marvel where the filmmaker thinks that gender reversal is the ultimate act of liberating women from the shackles of society. But in reality, the subsequent effect is so plasticky on screen that there’s a fair chance that 90ml might receive vehement opposition, given that Tamil Nadu Government has imposed a ban on plastics. (...) We get that the director wanted to write a ‘dude’ film. But what we see is not that. Crass is crass, no matter who portrays it. 90ml ends up being one of those so-called ‘adult entertainers’ that needs to be called out for its terribly unimaginative ideas and insensitive portrayal of LGBT communities'.

'90ml says whatever men do, women can do. (...) 90ml is reasonably fun and remarkably non-judgmental about Rita. (...) Though they embark on booze and weed adventures, those don’t define them. Their closeness does, their willingness to be there for each other. (...) The very existence of a Tamil film where women demand sexual satisfaction feels like it’s worth all that screaming in the theatre. As always, the writing doesn’t keep up. It’s patchy. 90ml can’t decide whether to treat Rita as a poster girl or a flesh-and-blood character, and her decisions about her boyfriend feel too random. Several episodes (a shootout in the streets, or threatening a man who’s taken on a mistress) needed to be less gimmicky. And don’t even get me started about the ending. But I keep thinking about the killer twist at the interval and the non-sensational way this development is handled. I keep thinking about the neglected married woman who finds a caretaker for her “bungalow” again. I keep thinking that this film doesn’t reduce emancipation to an earnest Jyothika-starrer - realisation and self-improvement are important, but so is the freedom to live like men do, maybe even making the same mistakes. And this makes me want to give 90ml an extra half-star. It opens the door for a conversation that doesn’t always come up, and that’s more than what most mainstream movies do'.
