Thadam è un poliziesco dignitoso che rappresenta una porzione di umanità dai valori discutibili, e che meritava un ritmo più costante. Il soggetto è abbastanza ingegnoso, e la sceneggiatura si sforza di svilupparlo in modo coerente. La trama si concentra sui due protagonisti maschili, Ezhil e Kavin, trascurando le figure femminili e i personaggi secondari. L'interpretazione offerta da Arun Vijay, l'attore principale in un doppio ruolo, è accettabile, a tratti anche convincente. Ma è un peccato che il resto del cast sia così anonimo. La fotografia sa il fatto suo.
L'aspetto più intrigante di Thadam è sicuramente la gestione dell'espediente narrativo dei gemelli, e lo si apprezza meglio alla seconda visione. Si parte con una separazione morale netta fra i due, però, col procedere della storia, le incertezze crescono, coinvolgendo altri personaggi. Thadam è anche una storia di vendetta. Accenna una condanna dei metodi violenti adottati dalla polizia e una lacrimosa vicenda familiare. Ma la vendetta, l'amore, la madre, le vittime, tutto è secondario e funzionale. Si stempera nel grigio. I gemelli, fulcro di Thadam, non incarnano gli opposti, bensì la stessa faccia di un'etica slabbrata.
TRAMA
Ezhil, ingegnere e imprenditore edile, sogna un roseo futuro con Deepika. Kavin, truffatore e violento, passa da un letto all'altro. Un ragazzo viene ucciso. Una fotografia dimostra inequivocabilmente la presenza di Ezhil sul luogo e all'ora del delitto. Ma ecco spuntare il gemello Kavin, ubriaco fradicio. Il caso si ingarbuglia sempre più, e la polizia è in difficoltà: chi è il colpevole fra i due?

'Kollywood - and cinema, in general - has seen many identical twin-based subjects. (...) We’ve seen it so many times in the past that it seems highly unlikely that something can give the same-old subject a new angle. Thadam does. It’s based on a real life incident, it says right at the start. The film ends with information on similar incidents in other countries. All this helps lending authenticity to an otherwise incredulous storyline. (...) Thadam takes quite some time to settle down - there are a few times when you get confused if it’s Ezhil or Kavin you’re watching on the big screen. But once it sets the tone for the two main characters, and a few others in a police station, it kicks off. The second half is where the meat is. That’s where Arun Vijay scores; he delivers a competent performance as both Ezhil and Kavin, showing variations rather subtly. Director Magizh Thirumeni not only gets his lead characters right but also etches a solid character for the female cop Malar (Vidya Pradeep in an effective performance). He does miss a trick, though, by giving us weakly-written female leads (Tanya Hope and Smruthi) who feature in a few sequences and songs that seem to have been put together in haste. The flashback to the twins (and a lengthy tale revolving around Sonia Aggarwal) might act as a speedbreaker to an otherwise taut storyline, but the twist in the end makes up for most of it. It’s something you didn’t see coming, and Magizh ought to have ended it right there, instead of trying to give the film a feel-good sort of finish. Barring these few missteps, Thadam is mostly a taut thriller that keeps you engaged till the very end'.

'In Thadam, writer-director Magizh Thirumeni puts a new spin on one of the oldest masala-cinema tropes: the double role. (...) The twin performances have hinged on a difference: one is good, the other is evil. (...) (In Thadam) there’s no good/evil demarcation. Neither Kavin nor Ezhil is exactly a moral person, but they’re both treated sympathetically, painted in “circumstances made me this way” shades. (...) Arun Vijay gives a muscular performance, though at first I felt he wasn’t doing enough to make Kavin and Ezhil distinct - but slowly, we realise that this is the point. (...) The real low points are very few. (...) The film could have used a (...) better writing in the flashback. (...) But as keep-you-guessing thrillers go, Thadam isn’t bad at all. The reveal is everything, and I enjoyed the present-day portions with the policewoman named Malar (Vidya Pradeep, who makes you want to see what she’ll do in a role with more definition). That this useful supporting character has more footage than either heroine is a sign that the film has at least some of its priorities right'.
