DREAM GIRL

Non toccatemi Ayushmann Khurrana. In Dream Girl, non il miglior film della sua brillante carriera, l'attore è a dir poco irresistibile. L'ho adorato. Poi, certo, la sceneggiatura è grossolana e banalizza un buon soggetto, alcuni dialoghi sono imbarazzanti, i personaggi non convincono. DG resta in superficie e non approfondisce nessuno dei temi che sfiora. Poteva osare di più. 

Questa volta Khurrana sceglie di interpretare una commedia leggerissima che accenna alla solitudine nell'era dei social. Nel primo tempo Karam, il protagonista, si impegna a costruire Pooja e ad ammaliarci. Nel secondo, tenta di distruggere Pooja, ma la sceneggiatura perde mordente e diventa un po' ripetitiva - troppe conversazioni telefoniche non giovano alla fluidità della narrazione. DG è divertente però non intriga, e si sgonfia col procedere della trama.

TRAMA

Karam ha il dono di imitare perfettamente la voce femminile. Perchè non usarlo?

'It is only a torrential rain of laughs in the theatre that critic-proofs a film like this for its audiences. This is a non-stop gag-fest. And all that you need to know is if the gags being thrown at you at the speed of light, hits your brains, or bounces off the skull. Happy to note, most jokes, in varying levels of coolness and crassness, land. You instantly crack up - going through a series of corny characters, situations, and a fairly slapstick sort of massy humour. You laugh, no? Yes. That said; frankly, anything I'm gonna say after this amounts to taking oneself too seriously. Because the movie so doesn't. (...) Ayushmann Khurana, of course, plays Karam, plus Puja - totally killing it as both. (...) Now should we think about the finesse of filmmaking here (there's very little of it), or gags overstaying their welcome (some of them do), or the political correctness of some of these small-town (...) gags... Should we think, about? Don't. Seriously, don't'.

'Dream Girl is, at its best, a malnourished tribute to Vicky Donor. (...) The ensemble cast is terrific and the one-liners (...) creative. The job is used as a device to access - and parody - various sections of society. At its worst, DG is an endless sequence of cultural-appropriation gags that passes off male horniness as Indian loneliness. It sugarcoats the rawness of male desire to present a loud “family-friendly” take on what might have otherwise made for a reflective story. (...) The mistaken-identity motif becomes repetitive after a while. (...) Unlike other Khurrana films, even the ‘social’ is forced into the social comedy. The feeble attempts to humanize Pooja’s profession are punctuated by an unnecessary villain and the lead actor’s penchant for token speeches. (...) His (Khurrana) angsty comic timing is infinitely better than Hindi cinema’s idea of commercial (sex, slapstick, small-town) comedy. His quirky social posturing is infinitely better than Akshay Kumar or John Abraham’s idea of national service - it addresses smaller-than-life everyday issues rather than larger-than-life cultural shortcomings. But Khurrana is now so synonymous with his own custom-made genre that, as tough as it sounds, his talent has started to feel a bit monotonous'.
