Le reazioni degli spettatori in sala sono davvero imprevedibili. Chi l'avrebbe detto che un film di guerra, privo di superstar, privo di coreografie, privo di storie d'amore, scritto e diretto da un esordiente, avrebbe conquistato il secondo posto, ad oggi, nella classifica degli incassi (hindi) del 2019?
Uri: The Surgical Strike è la sorpresa dell'anno. Ingenuità e retorica sono diluite in una pellicola ben fatta, con una regia attenta, un cast all'altezza, una sceneggiatura che non delude, e con personaggi sufficientemente delineati (considerando l'affollamento e il genere d'azione). Un montaggio più severo, e il ritmo sarebbe risultato quasi perfetto.
Uri non annoia, ed è già moltissimo per un soggetto che si basa su strategie militari. Le sequenze di combattimento sono rapide (GRAZIE), ben concepite, e nel complesso piuttosto realistiche, con qualche episodio cruento. La narrazione, da un certo punto in poi, assume scaltramente i connotati del thriller e cattura in pieno l'attenzione dello spettatore. L'operato del direttore della fotografia contribuisce a regalare un certo fascino. Da menzionare anche il rapporto madre-figlio, per una volta raccontato in modo sensibile, senza virare nel patetico.
Il film si innesta nel filone patriotico e nazionalista che sta spopolando in India, e, pur commettendo qualche passo falso nella rappresentazione stereotipata del nemico, non manca di misura, almeno in confronto ad altre pellicole similari. La missione di Uri è glorificare i corpi speciali dell'esercito indiano impegnati nella lotta al terrorismo interno ed esterno.
Vicky Kaushal è estremamente convincente nel ruolo, ed è affiancato da un gruppo di ottimi attori, fra cui primeggia il solito Paresh Rawal. L'interpretazione di Kirti Kulhari si fa notare: il suo personaggio è ben calibrato e meritava a mio parere uno spazio maggiore.
TRAMA
La sceneggiatura si ispira ad un evento reale del 2016 di cui è trapelato pochissimo. Lunga premessa a parte, Uri narra la pianificazione ed attuazione di un attacco chirurgico dei corpi speciali in territorio kashmiro occupato dal Pakistan. Lo scopo è distruggere cellule terroristiche localizzate a ridosso del confine con il territorio controllato dall'India, colpevoli di aver compiuto un sanguinoso attentato nella città di Uri.

"Uri is a decent looking film (...) and while the action is convincing, the proceedings are unmistakably dull. (...) The performances are mostly solid - the square jawed Mohit Raina and the lovely Swaroop Sampat stand out - and the action looks okay, but this is an uninteresting depiction of a best-case scenario. (...) This might be a boring film, but it provides drama simply by showing Indian audiences that our military can be competent. The Indian army (...) has everything under control. That efficiency may feel fantastical to an Indian audience, and Uri becomes therefore less a feature film and more an advertisement. Fantasies are about wish-fulfilment. Uri made me wish that Rajit Kapur, this soft-spoken man with no resemblance to Vivek Oberoi, was indeed our Prime Minister".

''How did you land Uri [given the unlikely CV]? (...)
I got a call from Ronnie Screwvala's office that they had dropped off an action script [to be directed by Aditya, who I already knew]. I saw the title, Uri: The Surgical Strike. And now I wasn't the actor. I was actually curious to know what happened [in Uri]. It took me four-and-a-half hours to read the script, in one go, which is what I prefer - as if I'm watching a film. That's when I get a true sense of what I feel.
As an audience?
Yes. So I started watching the film, and I just couldn't get it. There was just too much information, military-technical-logistical language. Also, I didn't feel anything. Because I hadn't taken four-and-a-half hours to read a script before. (...) My dad, who was equally curious about the Uri incident, and had read the script lying around, asked me what I thought of it. I said I'm not sure. He told me that if I miss this film, it'll be the biggest mistake of my life! He said that maybe I'm in a different space right now, in another kind of military film, and that's why unable to connect.
You were playing a Pak military officer, shooting for Raazi. Of course you're not going to like Uri!
[Laughs] And then I don't know what happened. I got back to the script four days later, finished it in an hour-and-a-half, as if I was reading it for the first time. I called up Sonia [Screwvala's associate] at 3 am, and said, I will do the film'.
CURIOSITA'
* Uri è stato in larga parte girato in Serbia.
* Nel film viene ripetuta una battuta diventata negli ultimi mesi molto popolare: 'The protagonist in the film asks his squad "How's the Josh?" (Hinglish for "How's the spirit?"). The squad replies "High, Sir!". This question is asked to the cadets in military academies in India to test their enthusiasm. This dialogue went viral over Indian social media. The dialogue was quoted by several individuals and institutions. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the National Museum of Indian Cinema of Films Division of India in Mumbai, asked this question at the beginning of his address to the film fraternity attending the ceremony'. A fine maggio Narendra Modi è stato riconfermato nel suo incarico di primo ministro. E nel 2016, all'epoca dei fatti a cui Uri si ispira, Modi era al suo primo mandato.
