Sottoculture, musica, storie di formazione e di riscatto, sogni che si realizzano: Gully Boy, di una bellezza rara, è il film per me. Potreste obiettare: tutto già visto e sentito. Vero. Ma magari non ambientato a Mumbai e non in hindi. E comunque non riuscireste a smorzare il mio incontenibile entusiasmo, perchè l'energia che GB sprigiona è spontanea e travolgente, ed è di forza tale da spazzar via quanto già visto e sentito. Ogni fotogramma emana un'intensità neonatale. Non rappresenta qualcosa, piuttosto nasce sotto i tuoi occhi.
Proiettato il 9 febbraio 2019, in prima mondiale, al Festival di Berlino, GB è innanzitutto una sorta di manifesto della scena hip-hop mumbaita. Basterebbe già questo a qualificarlo come prodotto nuovo, anzi, nuovissimo nel panorama hindi non autoriale. Ma è anche un mucchio di altre cose. Il retroterra sociale, ad esempio, è robusto: la quotidianità a Dharavi, l'ambiente musulmano, la poligamia, la condizione femminile, la disoccupazione, la criminalità, le divisioni e le barriere da non valicare. Come analizzare un'opera così fitta, così significativa, così coinvolgente? Ogni dettaglio, curato in modo maniacale, suscita una riflessione. Mi limiterò a sottolineare che, nel film, il ritmo della narrazione è perfetto, è vita. Lo senti battere e ti emoziona. I personaggi si muovono sul beat degli umori giornalieri e dei pensieri inespressi, e comunicano solo con improvvise eruzioni. GB è puro amore per la musica. Ogni aspetto, tecnico e/o estetico, soggiace alla musica. Brava Zoya: la musica è dentro di te.
Ranveer Singh qui spicca il salto. Non sembra un clone di, è naturalissimo, come fosse uscito rappando dal grembo materno e non avesse fatto altro da allora. Ruoli comici, ruoli drammatici. Ranveer a questo punto può tutto. Vijay Raaz neanche ve lo dico. Siddhant Chaturvedi mi ha lasciato a bocca spalancata: il ragazzo, superlativamente figo, spacca lo schermo con un carisma addirittura osceno per un esordiente.
Zoya Akhtar segue la storia, non la narra. I personaggi hanno la libertà di essere se stessi. Gli attori non si impongono. Anche la trama si svolge in modo autonomo senza ingerenze esterne. Tutto sembra vivo e reale. Il secondo tempo è lievemente inferiore al primo, ma nel complesso il film è tesissimo e avvincente. Dialoghi brillanti, battute fulminanti, montaggio di gran classe. "Non adatto i miei sogni alla vita, ma la vita ai miei sogni". GB parte da Rock On!! e schizza in alto sino alle stelle. Chi raccoglierà il testimone?
TRAMA
Murad vive con la famiglia a Dharavi. Studia, lavora part-time, esce con gli amici. Ha una fidanzata che ogni due per tre si becca una denuncia per aggressione. Ma più di ogni altra cosa, Murad ha la musica dentro.
ASSOLUTAMENTE DA NON PERDERE
* La scena del turismo da slum. Non commento perchè mi monta la iena.
* La scena della ribellione della madre di Murad. Standing ovation.
* 1000 altre scene e 1000 battute. In sostanza: tutto il film è assolutamente da non perdere.
ASSOLUTAMENTE DA DIMENTICARE
* Il lato violento di Safeena. Mi è sembrata l'unica forzatura in una narrazione altrimenti fluidissima.

"Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, an underdog story shining a light on India’s incipient hip-hop subculture, is the first great Hindi film of 2019 and a rousing celebration of spunk. The writing is enthralling, the texture fantastic, and this world is a revelation. Here are characters without room to breathe who express themselves breathlessly, through a style of music that has always belonged to the marginalised. Dissent finds a way - and a beat. (...) The knockout punch comes from MC Sher. With a name that means both big cat and couplet, Sher is played by Siddhant Chaturvedi with natural, easy ferocity. It’s the film’s top performance. When he battles, he seems to be shutting down rivals for real. (...) Written by Vijay Maurya - who also plays Murad’s uncle - the lines are authentic from the start, allowing us a ringside view. Language varies across classes (...) The genius lies in the dialogues evolving; late in the film, when Murad is raging against his father, you can sense metre in his words. She points to Alia Bhatt’s part in Gully Boy (2019): “Safeena was the character, from Dharavi, in a script, that Reema had written for her movie. That film didn’t happen. But I fell in love with her. I asked her if I can just take Safeena. Yeah, why not! We supplanted and then adapted her to fit into the world of Gully Boy.” (...) Gully Boy was the first film with Zoya-Reema’s film company, Tiger Baby. The name, by the way comes from “the nickname that Anurag [Kashyap] and all” gave Zoya: “It’s my spirit animal!” Left to Reema, the company would’ve been called Balls of a Brass Monkey: “Zoya is like, don’t be ridiculous!
